أبا منذرٍ بالله إلا صدقتني

علامَ ولمْ خَنَّثتني يا أخا النضرِ

Aba Mundhir, I implore you by God, be truthful with me

Why, oh brother of al-Nadr, did you insult me?

أذمَّتْ لقائي حُرمةٌ لك نِكتُها

فلم أشفِها أمْ قلتَ ما قلتَ بالحزْر

My meeting with you was forbidden, its marks apparent

So I did not perceive them or did you just guess?

فكيف وألحاظي حِدادٌ كأنها

نِصالٌ وألفاظي أشدُّ من الصخر

How could I when my glances are mourning as if

They were blades and my words harder than rock

وكيف ولي في كل عضوٍ ومَفْصِلٍ

وجارحة قلبان شهمان من جمر

And how when in each limb and every joint I have

Two raging hearts of embers

ولو عزمتْ نفسي على قطع لُجّةٍ

من البحرِ سبحاً ما نكَلْتُ عن البحرِ

And if my soul intended to cross an arm

Of the sea swimming I would not refrain from the sea

ولو مسّ ثوبي ثوبَ أمك مسّةً

لأولدها خمسين مثلَكَ في شهر

And if my garment touched the garment of your mother

I would sire for her fifty like you in a month

فأيَّةُ آياتي وأيُّ أدلّتي

تدل على التخنيث يا ابن أبي عمرو

So which signs of mine and proofs of mine

Indicate effeminacy, O son of Abu ‘Amr?

بعينَيْ ربوخٍ في استها أيرُ نائكٍ

نظرت ولم تنظر بناظرتَيْ صقر

With the eyes of a wakeful observant spy

I looked while you did not look with eyes of a falcon

أراك خلافَ الحقِّ رأيٌ بمثله

كفرتَ وعلّقت الصليب على النحر

I see you having an opinion unlike the truth

You blasphemed and hung the cross around your neck

وما كان من لا يقدرُ اللَهَ قدرَهُ

ويشفعُهُ بابنٍ ليقدرني قدري

One who does not appreciate God’s worth

And intercedes through a son to empower me

فإن كنتَ في ريب ولم تر آيةً

تبيِّنُ ما قد لبَّس الشك من أمري

So if you are in doubt and did not see a sign

Clarifying what doubt has confused of my matter

فجرّبْ على إحدى بناتك فحلتي

متى شئت فالتجريب أثلج للصدر

Then try my strength on one of your daughters

Whenever you wish for trying clears the chest

فلو لقيتْني بِكْرهنَّ لقاءةً

لما نسيت أيري إلى آخر الدهر

If she met me as a virgin our meeting

Would never be forgotten till the end of time
