1. صرَّحتْ عن طَويّة الأصدقاءِ

    واضحاتُ التجريب والابتلاءِ

    My sincere friends revealed

    The trials have made clear

  2. وأبى المخْضُ أنْ يُكَشِّفَ إلا

    عن صريحٍ مهذَّبٍ أو غُثَاءِ

    And the examiner refused to expose

    Except for refined or muddy overflow

  3. ليس للمُضْمَرِ الدخيل من الصَّا

    حب غير التَّكْشيف والاجتلاءِ

    The stranger has no love in the race

    Except for revelation and stripping bare

  4. وخَبيءُ الفؤاد يعلمه العا

    قلُ قبلَ السماع بالإيماءِ

    And the heart's secret, the mind knows

    Before hearing, through mere gesture and nod

  5. ولهذا اكتفى البليغُ من الإسـ

    ـهاب فيما يريد بالإيحاءِ

    So the eloquent sufficed with a hint

    Of what he wanted, through mere allusion

  6. وظنونُ الذكيِّ أَنْفذ في الحقـ

    ـقِ سهاماً من رؤية الأغبياءِ

    And the intellect's conjectures are sharper

    Arrows than the sight of fools

  7. وإذا كنت لا تُؤَثِّل إلا

    درهماً جائزاً على البُصراءِ

    If you only exemplify a valid

  8. وكذا لستَ تعرفُ الشيء إلا

    بعد فحصٍ من أمره وابتلاءِ

    Dirham to the keen observer

    And thus you only recognize something

  9. وهما يُمْتعان وقتاً من الدهـ

    ـر ويُفنيهما وشيكُ المَضاءِ

    After examining its matter and testing

    Both take some time to enjoy

  10. فالصديق المأمون للزمن الفا

    دح والمرتجى لدى البُرَحاءِ

    And soon perishing erases them

    So a trusted, faithful friend for hardship

  11. والذي أنت وهْو في جوهر النفْـ

    ـس جميعاً مِن تربة وهواءِ

    And hoped for in calamity

    You and he in the soul's essence

  12. وكماءٍ مزجتَه بمُدامٍ

    فاستقرّا تَجَنُّساً في وعاءِ

    Are both of the same soil and air

    And water whose mixture

  13. لم يكن فيهما من الفضل إلا

    فاصلاتُ الألقاب والأسماءِ

    Settled congenially in a vessel

    There was no superiority between them

  14. ثم شيءٌ عرفْتَهُ بالتَّجَاري

    ب وأخلصتَه بكشف الغطاءِ

    Except the separators of titles and names

    Something you got to know through friendship

  15. إنما تُبْرز الجوَاهِرُ ما في

    ها إذا ما أَمَعْتها بالصِّلاءِ

    And purified by removing the cover

  16. لا يَغُرَّنَّكَ المُماذِقُ بالظا

    هر في حال مدة الالتقاءِ

    Gems only show what is inside

    When rubbed against the whetstone

  17. من كلام يُوشَى بمدح جميلٍ

    وحديثٍ كالقهوة الصَّهباءِ

    Be not fooled by the taster

    In the state of temporary meeting

  18. ويمينٍ كَعَطِّكَ البُرْدَ لا تنْـ

    ـظر في سُقمها وفي الإبراءِ

    Of speech adorned with beautiful praise

    And talk like white coffee

  19. عبْدُ عَيْن فإن تغَيَّبْتَ عنه

    أَكَل اللحم وارتعى في الدماءِ

    And an oath to lend you warmth, do not look

    At their frailty or recovery

  20. وإذا ما أردته لقتيلٍ

    لحق الوُدُّ منه بالعَنْقاءِ

    A slave of the eye, if you are absent from him

    He eats the meat and drinks the blood

  21. ولقد قال سَيِّدٌ من أُولي الفضـ

    ـل ومن سِرِّ صفوة الأصفياءِ

    And if you want him to kill

    He directs friendship to the gallows

  22. ليس أهلُ العراق لي بصحابٍ

    إنْ هُمُ جانبوا طريقَ الوفاءِ

    A master of merit said, of the elite

    Of the sincere chosen ones:

  23. إنما صاحبي المُشارك في القُلـ

    ـل وذو البذل والندى والحياءِ

    The people of Iraq are no friends to me

    If they deviate from the path of loyalty

  24. لا يلَهِّيهِ عنه خفضٌ ولا ين

    ساه عند المُرْبَدَّةِ الشَّوْهَاءِ

    My friend is he who shares feelings

    Generosity, dew, shyness

  25. مَالُهُ كَنْزُهُ إذا خَفَتَ الغي

    ثُ وضاقت خلائق السُّمَحاءِ

    Not distracted from him by meanness

    Or forgetting the lofty if degraded

  26. وانتفى الشيخ من بنيه ولم تعـ

    ـطف على بَكْرِهَا أعفُّ النساءِ

    His wealth is his treasure if calamity descends

    And the tolerant's nature narrows

  27. حكمةٌ ما ورثتُها عن حكيمٍ

    فيلسوفٍ من عِتْرة الأنبياءِ

    The old man is estranged from his children

    The gentlest of women do not pity his first-born

  28. ليس شيء يُفيدُه المرء في الدهـ

    ـر على حين فقره والثراءِ

    A wisdom I inherited from a wise

    Philosophic sage of the prophets

  29. هو خيرٌ من صاحبٍ ورفيقٍ

    مُسْعِدٍ في الجَليَّةِ البَهْماءِ

    Of no use to a man in life

    In his poverty or wealth

  30. ليس بين الصديق والنفس فرقٌ

    عند تحصيل قسمة الأشياءِ

    Better than a friend and enjoyable comrade

    Fortunate in dire gloom

  31. يَا سَمِيَّ الوصيِّ يا شِقَّ نفسي

    وأخي في الملمَّة النَّكراءِ

    There is no difference between friend and soul

    In obtaining a share of things

  32. يا أخاً حَلَّ في المكارم والسؤْ

    دَدِ أعلى مَحَلِّ أهل السَّناءِ

    O namesake of the advisor, O my soul's half

    And brother in gloomy adversity

  33. لم يُقَصِّرْ به اعتيادٌ ولم يقـ

    ـعد بِه مولدٌ عن استعلاءِ

    O brother who excels in glories and gifts

    Highest status of the eminent

  34. وَلَهُ بَعْدُ مِنْ مآثره الزُّهْ

    رِ خِلالٌ تُرْبي على الحصباءِ

    Not reduced by habit, not hindered by birth

    From rising above

  35. عَجَمَ الدَّهْرُ خلْفَتَيْن وسوَّى

    بين حالَيْ رخائه والبلاءِ

    And he still has of his blossoms

    Virtues that grow on arid land

  36. كرمُ الخِيْم والنِّجَارِ وتيكُمْ

    شيمَةٌ شارفٌ من النبلاءِ

    Time has parted me in it

    With two arrows of separation and estrangement

  37. وبيانٌ كأنه خرَزُ النا

    ظم في جيد طَفْلةٍ غيداءِ

    I see him only at the house's edge

    Or after a duration of misery

  38. وطباعٌ أرقُّ من ظُبَةِ السي

    ف وأمضى من رِيقة الرقشاءِ

    When I see him, it is as if I am

    Between a delightful garden's blooms

  39. تتراءى له العيون فتلقا

    ه نِقاباً بدائها والدواءِ

    The darkness's evening appears to my sight

    With painful expressions and piercing cries

  40. فيصلٌ للأمور يأتي المعالي

    بارتقاء فيها وحُسْن اهتداءِ

    Conversations, if you call the unhearing with them

    They would answer, so excellent is that call

  41. وغريمٌ أمضى من الأجل الحتْـ

    ـم عصيمٌ بأُربَةٍ بَزْلاءِ

    You are good company, so submit

    To the hardship of fate and live safe from harm

  42. وهو إلفُ الحجا وتِرْبُ المساعي

    وعَقيدُ الندى وحِلف البهاءِ

    We will not chide you complaining, seeking

    Apology with forgiving the educated

  43. وهو بعلٌ للمكرمات فما ينـ

    ـفكُّ بين العَوَان والعذارءِ

    With speech, if fate had hearing

    It would incline to listen for its beauty

  44. حافظٌ للصديق إن زَلَّت النعْـ

    ـلُ به أو هوى عن العَلياءِ

    And if a single letter were cast

    Into the oceans from it, the water's taste would change

  45. وجوادٌ عليه بالمال والنفـ

    ـس وبذلِ العَقيلة الوَفْراءِ

    It is sharper than swords, when brandished

    More truthful than the firm decrees of destiny

  46. لا يُؤاتي على اقْتسَارٍ وَلا ينـ

    ـهَضُ إلا بالعزة القعساءِ

    It heals the breast of resentful malice

    And calms the inflammation of a blue wound

  47. غير أنَّ الزمان أقْصدَنِي فيـ

    ـه بسهمَيْ تفرُّقٍ وانْتئَاءِ

    Its reciters wear it as a gown

    Of beauty that is more honorable than any gown

  48. لا أراه إلا على شَحَطِ الدا

    ر وإما عن مدة شَقَّاءِ

    The narrators do not find fault with it

    Nor is what they hear of it open to exception

  49. فإذا ما رأيْتُهُ فكأني

    بين أثناء روضةٍ مَرْجاءِ

    It is not coarse raving or maundering

    Nonsense of disordered clouding

  50. يتجلَّى عن نَاظِرَيَّ عَشَا الجَهْـ

    ـل بألفاظه العذَابِ الطِّرَاءِ

    Rather, it is cool, pure water

    When agreeing with one fasting at nightfall

  51. وأحاديثَ لو دَعَوْتَ بها الأعْ

    صَمَ لَبَّى من حسن ذاك الدعاءِ

    The ground shifts yet it is freshly even

    Celestial, of the essence of Gemini

  52. طِبْتَ خِلّاً فاسلمْ على نَكد الده

    ر وعش آمناً من الأَسْواءِ

    Reproach of a gentle friendship, more subtle

    Than the speech of prophets, though of dusty origin

  53. لا رُزئْنَاكَ عَاتباً طلب العُتـ

    ـبَى بِإعْفَا مَعَاتِب الأُدَبَاءِ

    If any fault comes from your brother

    Flowing against the creed of the faithful

  54. بكلام لو أن للدهر سمعاً

    مالَ من حسنه إلى الإصغاءِ

    Reproach is majestic unlike the lapse

    Of scholars, it cannot be matched

  55. ولوَ اَنّ البحارَ يُقذَفُ فيها

    منه حرفٌ ما أَجَّ طعم الماءِ

    Truly I say, may God give you long life

    In ascendance and loftiness

  56. وهْو أمضى من السيوف إذا هُز

    زَتْ وأَوحَى من مُبْرَمَاتِ القَضاءِ

    The saying is yours, not ours, and submission is ours

    To the way of the wise

  57. وهْو يَشفي الصدور من جنَف الحق

    د ويُغْضي من مقلة زرقاءِ

    Goodness is better than picking out faults

    Forgiving in taking and giving

  58. يكْتَسِي مُنشدوه منه رداءً

    ذا جمال أكرِمْ به من رداءِ

    Overlooking a slip, if it hurts

    Dismissing interpretation and denial

  59. لا تَعَايَى به الرواةُ ولم يُسْـ

    ـلِمْهُ مَسْمُوعُه إلى استثناءِ

    Not every lapse can bear apology

    Its lack causing the brotherhood to falter

  60. ليس بالمُعْمِل الهَجين ولا الوَحْـ

    ـشِيِّ ذي العُنْجُهيَّةِ العَثْوَاءِ

    I have not seen contention cause aught

    But separation, however long the contention

  61. بل هو الباردُ الزُّلالُ إذا وا

    فق من صائم حلول عَشاءِ

    A bride prepared for divorce

    Reproached at a happy occasion

  62. تَخْلُقُ الأرضُ وهو غضٌّ جديدٌ

    فَلكيٌّ من عنصر الجوزاءِ

    Prolonged reproach breeds hatred

    In the heart of one hating hatred

  63. عَتْبُ إلْفٍ أرقُّ من كَلِم الأم

    مِ وإن كان من ذرى خَلْقاءِ

    I say this not because I reproach

    But trees of reproach bear separation's fruits

  64. إن يَكُنْ عَنَّ مِنْ أخيك فَعَالٌ

    جارَ فيه عن مذهب الأوفياءِ

    Not all brothers fulfill what satisfies you

    Of each charming quality

  65. جَلَّ في مثله العتابُ وعَالَى

    أن يُوَازَى بزَلَّةِ العلماءِ

    In them is what is in men of faults,

    Some you praise one day, some equal

  66. فَبِحقٍّ أقول عَمَّرَكَ اللَّـ

    ـه طويلاً في رِفْعَةٍ وعلاءِ

    What fault do you see like red gold

    Or a radiant tail?

  67. ولَكَ القولُ لا لنا ولك التَّسْـ

    ـليمُ منَّا لمذهب الحكماءِ

    Where is one who safeguards the friend, unseen,

    From the evil company of enemies?

  68. إن خيراً من التَّقَصِّي على الخِلـ

    ـلِ سَماحٌ في الأخذ والإعطاءِ

    When this is missed, the days will not show him

    So delight afterward in crying

  69. واغتِفارٌ لهفوةٍ إنْ ألمَّت

    واطِّرَاحُ التفسير والانتفاءِ

    An example I have set for you, so listen

    And examine - may you be rewarded well

  70. ليس في كل زلَّةٍ يسع العذْ

    رُ وفي ضِيقهِ انتكَاسُ الإخاءِ

    Everything is known by sense or hearing

    Or clear proofs

  71. ما رأيتُ المِراء يوجِبُ إلا

    فُرقةً ما اعتمدتَ طول المراءِ

    So it has a place, and in it a chef

    Of eloquence, with end and expiration

  72. وعَرُوسٍ قد جُهِّزتْ بطلاقٍ

    عاتبتْ في وَليدَةٍ شَنْآءِ

    And each of intimates has a state

    In which he equals the peers

  73. إن طول العتاب يَزْدرِعُ البغـ

    ـضاءَ في قلب كَاره البَغْضاءِ

    What thing greater in esteem than the sword

    On the day of terrible calamity?

  74. لم أقل ذا لأَنْ عَتبْتُ ولكن

    شجرُ العَتْبِ مُثْمرٌ للجفاءِ

    Tell me, does the sword benefit in disaster

    Save for the strongest blow?

  75. ليس كلُّ الإخوان يجمع ما يُرْ

    ضيكَ من كل خلَّةٍ حسناءِ

    And deadly epidemic, which is the death rattle

    On the day of earthquake and tribulation

  76. فيه ما في الرجال من خَلَّةٍ تُحْـ

    ـمدُ يوماً وخَلَّةٍ سَوآءِ

    Do you see it demanded in the battle's folly

    Save for the stabbing, piercing blow?

  77. أيُّ خلٍّ تراه كالذهب الأح

    مر أو كالوذِيلة الزهراءِ

    So too the friend suits the hour

    Not the morning or evening

  78. أين من يحفظ الصديقَ بظَهْرِ الـ

    ـغيب من سوء قِرفة الأعداءِ

    So hold to him and do not leave him

    Lest you see him become contentious

  79. فات هذا فلن تراه يد الدَه

    ر فَأنْعِمْ في إثْره بالبكاءِ

    And both procure for the state, not fancy

    Between heart and entrails

  80. مثلاً ما ضَرْبتُه لك فاسمع

    وتَثَبَّتْ جُزيتَ خيرَ الجزاءِ

    Small matters are a burden to the eminent

    From them and from pride and conceit

  81. كلُّ شيء بالحس يُعرف أو بالـ

    ـسَمع أو بالأدلَّة الفُصحاءِ

    The kings of mankind, God has made bare

    Their kingship, in need of the vile

  82. فله موضعٌ وفيه طَباخٌ

    لبلاغٍ ذي مدة وانقضاءِ

    Had God left kings without followers and soldiers

    Flaws would appear and thrones crumble

  83. ولكل من الأخلاء حالٌ

    هوَ فيها كفءٌ من الأكفاءِ

    And equal the lowly, debauched ones

    Since between the best of God's creations

  84. أي شيء أجلُّ قدراً من السيـ

    ـفِ ليوم الكريهة العزَّاء

    There is difference, and between fools

    A coat of mail does not withstand them

  85. فأبِنْ لي هل يصلح السيفُ في العز

    زَاءِ إلا للضربةِ الرَّعلاءِ

    Except the links of the artful

    Thus humans are subdued for him

  86. والوَشيجُ الخَطِّيُّ وهو رِشاءُ الـ

    ـموتِ يومَ الزلزال والبأساءِ

    Between earth and sky

    And by blessings, thanks are sought

  87. هل تراه يُراد في حومة المأ

    قِطِ إلا للطعنة النجلاءِ

    Equal to the Giver of blessings

    Then he did not spare them imperfection, need

  88. فكذاك الصديقُ يصلح للسا

    عة دون الإصباح والإمساءِ

    And incapacity, sharing equally

    So that man be in utmost balance

  89. فتمسَّكْ به ولا تَدَعنْهُ

    فتراه خَصماً من الخُصماءِ

    Between bliss and misery

    So be patient with the friend if he slips

  90. وهما يُذْخران للحال لا الإحْـ

    ـوال بين الفؤاد والأحشاءِ

    Or goes by foot astray from guidance

    He is like water, have you seen a spring

  91. وصغار الأمور رِدْفٌ لذي الرُّت

    بة منها والفخرِ والكبرياءِ

    Spared from turbid droplets?

    And enjoy him, for he is enjoyable

  92. وملوكُ الأنام قد أحوج اللَّـ

    ـهُ عُرا ملكها إلى الدَّهماءِ

    And a reserve for a dreadful hour

    What body remains eternally

  93. ولوَ اَنَّ الملوكَ أفردها اللَّـ

    ـه من التابعين والوُزَعاءِ

    Spared from the killer of constitutions?

    What garden have you seen, the days

  94. لَبدتْ خَلَّةٌ وثُلَّثْ عُروشـ

    ـواسْتوت بالأخِسَّة الوُضعاءِ

    Leave eternally green?

    Or what good has the eye shown you

  95. ولَمَا كان بين أكمل خلق الـ

    ـلاهِ فرقٌ وبين أهل الغباءِ

    But yellowed at the edges?

    This life is but delusion

  96. حَلقُ الدرعِ ليس يُمسكُ منها

    سَرْدها غيرُ شكَّة الحِرباءِ

    And misery for the hapless

    We in it are riders traversing lands

  97. ولهذا الإنسانِ قد سخَّر الرح

    منُ ما بين أرضه والسماءِ

    As though we have reached the destination

    What can we expect as we race with death

  98. وبحَسْب النعماءِ يُطَّلَبُ الشكـ

    ـرُ كِفاءً لواهب النعماءِ

    Galloping faster than racers?

    If the friend turns away and flees

  99. ثم لم يُخْلِهِ من النقص والحا

    جة والعجز قِسمةً بالسَّواءِ

    To places no path reaches

    And casts brotherhood from the highest

  100. ليكونَ الإنسانُ في غاية التعْـ

    ديلِ بين السراء والضراءِ

    Into gloomy plunging darkness

    Heedless, not hoping to walk one day

  101. فاصْطبرْ للصديق إن زلَّ أو جا

    رَ برجلٍ عن الهُدى نَكْباءِ

    Out of shame

    Leave him, he will not be guided by a night's

  102. فهو كالماء هل رأيتَ مَعين الـ

    ـماء يُعْفَى من نُطفةٍ كَدْراءِ

    Barking or long howling

    Only the remainder is hoped for, from one

  103. وتَمتَّع به ففيه مَتاعٌـ

    ـوادّخارٌ لساعةٍ سَوْعاءِ

    With remaining and place for survival

    Make yourself comfortable with the blessed friend

  104. أيُّ جسم يَبقى على غِيَر الدهـ

    ـر خَلِيَّاً من قاتل الأدواءِ

    One day of tumultuous gloom

    Who, when called, answers, and if he is

  105. أيّما روضةٍ رأيتَ يدَ الأيـ

    ـيام في عبقريةٍ خضراءِ

    A champion of horsemen heroes

    All that you possess for the loyal

  106. أوَ ما أبصرتْ لك الخيرُ عينا

    ك رُباها مُصفَرَّةَ الأرجاءِ

    And the mongrels and bastards

    Whom, if you want for an occasion

  107. إنما هذه الحياةُ غرورٌ

    وشقاءٌ للمَعْشر الأشقياءِ

    Comes outstripping like the yearning she-camel

    And if you want him for a contest

  108. نحن فيها رَكبٌ نؤمُّ بلاداً

    فكأْن قد أُلْنا إلى الإنتهاءِ

    Comes like the fangs-baring lion

    So if he contends, he comes with undeniable

  109. ما عسى نَرتجي ونحن مع الأم

    وات يُحْدَى بنا أَحَثَّ الحُداءِ

    Proof, brilliant, shining arguments

    Vanquishing troops, his mention of them

  110. فإذا أعرض الصديقُ وولَّى

    لِقِفار لا تُهْتَدى فَيْفَاءِ

    Makes them prey to reverberations

    He takes them on with the sword of thought

  111. ورمى بالإخاء من رأس عَلْيا

    ءَ إلى مُدْلَهِمَّة ظَلْماءِ

    And spear of sound views

    Swords of intellects sharper than

  112. لم يُراقب إلّاً ولم يَرجُ أن يأ

    تيَ يوماً يمشي على استحياءِ

    Indian blades in the hand of a dusty knight

    You see the people fallen in the fray

  113. فاتركَنْهُ لا يهتدى لمبيتٍ

    بنُباحٍ ولا بطولِ عُواءِ

    Captives of his bucket and pulley

    He has a Fascine turning its

  114. إنما تُرْتجى البقيّةُ ممن

    فيه بُقيا وموضعٌ للبقاءِ

    Front as a flood, like an ash-colored elephant herd

    The warriors are palm trees, as you see

  115. واشدُدَنْ راحتيكَ بالصاحب المُسـ

    ـعِدِ يومَ البَليسة الغمّاءِ

    The movements of the brave brigade

    The dumbness of rhetoric in speech

  116. والذي إن دُعي أجاب وإن كا

    ن قِراعَ الفوارِس الشجعاءِ

    Clarion of relics and tidings

    What better thing than him, a knight

  117. كأبي القاسم الذي كلُّ ما يم

    لكُ للمعتفينَ والخُلطاءِ

    Riding the vast wilderness

    In wars without strategy

  118. والذي إن أردتَه لمَقامٍ

    جاء سَبْقاً كاللِّقوةِ الشَّغواءِ

    And fighting without ammunition

    A victim without crime he's guilty of

  119. وإذا ما أردتَهُ لجِدالٍ

    جاء كالمُصْمَئلَّة الدَّهياءِ

    And a wounded man resigned to his organs

    A slain beneath boards who survives

  120. فإذا دَلَّ جاء بالحُجّةِ الغَر

    رَاء ذاتِ المعالم الغراءِ

    By a trick in the moment of salvation

    While in that he is gentle, unperturbed

  121. مُنْجحُ القيل ما علمتُ وحاشا

    لخليلي من تَرْحةِ الإكداءِ

    No distinction between slain and captive

    You see him drinking a poisoned cup

  122. أرْيَحيٌّ بمثلهِ يُبْتنى المجـ

    ـدُ وتسمو به فروعُ البناءِ

    With a suggestion of a kiss or song

    None rivals him in valor but

  123. باسطُ الوجهِ ضاحكُ السن بسَّا

    مٌ على حين كُرْهِهِ والرّضاءِ

    Bassam ibn Qais and the martyred knight

    He has replaced my intimate, like the juice

  124. وثَبيتُ المَقام في الموقف الدَّحـ

    ـض إذا ما أضاق رحبُ الفضاءِ

    Of water for the murky intimacy

    With affection, as if the tender

  125. وله فكرةٌ يعيد بها الأمـ

    ـوات في مثل صورة الأحياءِ

    Narcissus, sickly with musk and saffron

    Firm and stable, though the house

  126. فتراها تَفْري الفَرِيَّ وكانت

    قَبله لا تُحيرُ رجعَ النداءِ

    Was vacant, and union long absent

    I fear not his absence, nor does he fear me

  127. ليس يرضى لها التحرُّك أو يُبـ

    ـرِزُها في زلازلِ الهيجاءِ

    In closeness or estrangement

    How great you two friends of pure comradeship

  128. فترى بينها مُقارعة الأب

    طالِ راحت من غارةٍ شعواءِ

    No two friends rival you in comradeship

    You both have my intimate inclination

  129. بتدابيرَ تَفلِقُ الحجرَ الصلْـ

    ـد وتَشفي من كل داء عياءِ

    More than singers in a bramble field exalted you

    That is my effort, if devoted

  130. يَهزم الجيشَ ذكرهُ فتراهم

    جَزَرَ الهام عُرْضةَ الأصداءِ

    Though I appreciate you with the best reward

    Affection's gift of tender speech

  131. يتلقّاهُمُ بسيفٍ من الفكـ

    ـرِ ورمح من صَنعة الآراءِ

  132. وسيوفُ العقول أمضى من الصَّمـ

    ـصام في كفِّ فارسِ الغبراءِ

  133. فترى القوم في قليبٍ من المو

    ت أسارى لدَلوه والرِّشاءِ

  134. وله حَرْشَفٌ يُديرُ قُداما

    هُ زحافاً كالفَيلَق الشهباءِ

  135. والمغاويرُ بالياتٌ كما عا

    يَنْتَ مَوْرَ الكتيبة الجأواءِ

  136. وهي خُرْسُ البيان من جهة النُّطـ

    ـق فصاحُ الآثار والأنباءِ

  137. أيُّ شيءٍ يكونُ أحسنَ منه

    فارساً ماشياً على العَفْراءِ

  138. في حروبٍ لا تُصطَلى لتراتٍ

    وقتال بغير ما شَحْناءِ

  139. وقتيلٍ بغير جُرمٍ جناه

    وجريحٍ مُسَلَّمِ الأعضاءِ

  140. وصريعٍ تحت السنابك ينجو

    برِماقٍ ولات حين نجاءِ

  141. وهْو في ذاك ناعمُ البال لا يفـ

    ـصل بين القتيل والأُسَراءِ

  142. وتراهُ يحثُّ كأسَ طِلاءٍ

    باقتراحٍ لقُبْلةٍ أو غناءِ

  143. لا يُدانيه في الشجاعة بِسطا

    مُ بن قيس وفارسُ الضحياءِ

  144. حلَّ من خُلَّتي محلَّ زُلالِ الـ

    ـماء من ذات غُلَّةٍ صَدْياءِ

  145. بودادٍ كأنه النرجسُ الغضـ

    ـضُ عليلاً بمِسكةٍ ذَفْراءِ

  146. راسياً ثابتاً وإن خَلَت الدا

    رُ جنابا وامتدَّ عهدُ اللقاءِ

  147. لستُ أخشى منه الغيابَ ولا تخـ

    ـشاه في حال قربنا والعَداءِ

  148. حبذا أنتُما خليلا صفاءٍ

    لا يُدانيكما خليلا صفاءِ

  149. لكما طوعُ خُلَّتي وقِيادي

    ما تغنت خَطباءُ في شَجْراءِ

  150. ذاك جُهدي إذا وَدِدتُ وإن أقـ

    ـدر أكافِئْكُما بخيرِ كِفاءِ

  151. وحباءُ الوداد بالمنطق الغضـ

    ـضِ يُجازَى به أَجلُّ حِباء
