1. يا ليت شعري حين فارقتكم

    هل أخذ البصري في حَطْمي

    Oh how I wish I knew, when we parted

    If my eyes took delight in your ruin

  2. أم هلْ حماهُ غيبتي سيدٌ

    يحْمي إذا ما قلَّ من يَحْمي

    Or if absence protected you, O master

    Protecting when few offer protection

  3. قُولا له إن كان لا ينتهي

    عن أكل لحمي طالباً عظمي

    Say to him, if he does not cease

    Consuming my flesh, seeking my bones

  4. مائدةُ السيد مشحونةٌ

    تُغنيك باللُّحمان عن لحمي

    The master’s feast is laden

    It will suffice you with meats instead of my flesh

  5. فإن أبيتَ السلم فاعزم بنا

    فإن حربي في قفا سِلمي

    But if you refuse peace, let us determine

    For my war is in the sheath of my peace

  6. أضربُ من يضربُني سادراً

    وتارةً أرمي الذي يرمي

    I strike those who strike me unprepared

    At times I shoot those who shoot at me

  7. فلْيخْشَ مني من دنا مُنْصُلي

    وليخش مني من نأى سهمي

    So let those who approach me sharply fear me

    And let those my arrow misses fear me too

  8. ولستُ بالظالم إخوانَه

    لكنني أمنع من ظُلمي

    I am no oppressor of my brothers

    But I prevent any oppression against me

  9. سيفي لساني والهدى قائدي

    والحقُّ محتجٌّ على خَصمي

    My tongue is my sword, guidance my leader

    Truth my disputant against any adversary

  10. أعذر من أنذر فليحتنِكْ

    غِرٌّ وعزمي بعدها عزمي

    I warn those I notify, so let them beware

    And my resolve after that is my resolve

  11. فلا يشِم عِرضي على غرَّة

    من لا ينافي وشْمُهُ وشمي

    So let no fool’s mistake smell my honor

    One whose mark is not mine, his scent not my scent

  12. وسَوْسِيَ الحلمَ ويا ربَّما

    أصبح يحكي كَلْمُهُ كَلمي

    Whispering patience, and O Lord

    His words in the morning tell my words

  13. قد جعل الله الذي سبَّني

    شيخاً يتمياً وأبى يتمي

    God has made those who reviled me

    Into elders, orphans, though I am no orphan

  14. فامسح بكفِّ الرُّحم يا فوخه

    وادعُ بأن يُدركه رُحْمِي

    So stroke with the palm of mercy, O Fokh

    And pray you attain my mercy

  15. فرُب ذي حَيْنٍ غدا حينُهُ

    مستملحاً في جلده رقمي

    For many a despised soul

    Became fine, branded by my mark

  16. أشْعرتُه من قَذعي مُرْمضاً

    صار به الحائنُ طِلَّسْمِي

    I made him, by my contempt, downfallen

    He became with it a lesson made

  17. أضحى لمن أبصرهُ آيةً

    تبصِّرُ الآية أو تُعمي

    So he became for those who saw him a sign

    Either enlightening or blinding the eye

  18. وناثرٍ أعجبه نثْرُهُ

    أذهلهُ عن نثره نَظْمِي

    And one whose spreading pleased him

    My composition left him confused about his own spreading

  19. وسار محمولاً على مَنْطِقِي

    يجري عليه صاغراً حُكمي

    And he went carried upon my words

    Submitting, ruled by my governance

  20. نقيصةٌ في الشعر من ذكره

    أقبحُ في شِعْريَ من خرمِ

    A flaw in poetry to mention him

    Uglier in my poetry than a tear

  21. يا ويحَ حسَّادي ويا ويلهُم

    من ذا أراهم قسْمَهُمْ قَسْمي

    Oh woe to my envious ones, and oh their misery

    Who do I see their portion is my portion?

  22. ثعالبٌ أطمعها حَتْفُها

    في قَسْورٍ لَحْظَتُه تُصْمي

    Foxes, their ruin makes them covetous

    In a castle whose glance makes me deaf

  23. أحلف بالله وآلائه

    ما فهم الزاري على فهمي

    I swear by God and His signs

    The measly one did not understand my understanding

  24. أَعْيُنُ أعدائي على غيبهم

    طلائعي تُوحي إلى وهمي

    My enemies’ eyes are on their unknowns

    My scouts suggest to my suspicions

  25. فكيف لا أعرف أضغانهم

    مع الأقاويل التي تَنْمِي

    How then would I not know their malice

    With the rumors that grow?

  26. فريسةُ الليثِ له وحدَهُ

    فلْيَبْأسِ الجاهلُ من غَشْمِي

    The lion’s prey is his alone

    So let the ignorant beware my ferocity

  27. ورُبَّما كَفْكَفَ من غايتَيْ

    بطشِ لساني ويدِي علمي

    And sometimes the limit of my

    Tongue’s lash and my hand’s knowledge checks him

  28. إنّي بنانِي مَنْ بنى يَذْبُلاً

    فليس تسطيعُ يدٌ هَدْمِي

    I am built by the One who built enduringly

    No hand can demolish me

  29. وإنني ما زلتُ مُسْتَحْسِناً

    مَغْفِرتي مُسْتقبِحاً نَقْمي

    And I still deem forgiveness good

    Deeming vengeance ugly

  30. والحزمُ في نَقْمي ولكنني

    أُوثرُ إحساني على حزمي

    Resolve is in my vengeance, but I

    Prefer kindness over resolve

  31. فلْيقُلِ البصْريُّ ما يَشْتهي

    سوّغْتُه المعسولَ من طَعمي

    So let Al-Basri say what he wishes

    I made good his sweetened speech

  32. سوّغْتُه القولَ ولو أنه

    يُعرِّقُ الجبهةَ أو يُدْمي

    I made good his words, even if

    They moisten the brow or cause blood to flow

  33. ولا يَخَلْها جاهلٌ نُهْزَةً

    فلا يُمْهِلُ داءه حَسمي

    Let no ignorant one leave it with an insult

    Lest his sickness evades my decisive treatment

  34. قد يَفْرقُ المجنون من كَيَّتي

    ويصعقُ العِفريت من رجمي

    Madness may separate the lunatic from my gathering

    And the demon convulse at my stoning

  35. ولو نجا أقْسمَ لا يأتلي

    أنْ ما رأى أثقبَ من نَجْمي

    And if he survives, he would swear

    None pierced more than my stars

  36. لولا قضاءُ الله في مَعْشرٍ

    ما طمع الطامِعُ في هَضْمي

    If not for God’s decree against a people

    The ambitious would not hope to devour me

  37. طُفتُ بأكنافك لا هاجماً

    وداءُ عمروٍ أمّنهُ هَجْمي

    I roamed your peripheries, not attacking

    And the affliction of Amr, my onslaught secured against it

  38. وليس شأْني الجهلَ لكنني

    قد يَقْدَحُ الإحراجُ في حِلْمي

    It is not my way to be ignorant, but

    Embarrassment may spark my forbearance

  39. واعلم إذا استخفَفْت بي أنه

    قد تَحْقِر الشيءَ وقد ينمي

    And know, if you take me lightly, that

    One may despise something, yet it grows
