1. نجَّاك يا ابن الحاجِبِ الحاجبُ

    وأين ينجو منّيَ الهاربُ

    Your patron spared you, O son of the doorkeeper,

    Where can one who flees from me escape?

  2. أبعدَ إحرازِك أيمانَنا

    هاربْتَنا واعتذر الحاجبُ

    After you broke your oath to us,

    You fled while the doorkeeper apologized.

  3. يا واقباً بالأمس في بيتهِ

    ما وقبَ المِخراقُ يا واقبُ

    O dweller in his house just yesterday,

    The torn garment cannot be mended, O dweller!

  4. يا عجباً إذ ذاك من حالةٍ

    دافِعُنا فيها هو الجاذِبُ

    How strange was your state back then,

    When we were the repeller and he the attractor.

  5. حقّاً لقد أولَيتَنَا جَفوةً

    يُمحِلُ منها البلدُ العاشبُ

    Indeed, you have shown us blatant hostility,

    Causing the whole country to become desolate.

  6. انظُر بعين العدلِ تُبْصرْ بها

    أنك عن منهاجِه ناكبُ

    Look with the eye of justice, and you will see

    That you have strayed from the right path.

  7. سالمتَ أضداداً فحاربتنا

    وذاك منك العَجَبُ العاجبُ

    You made peace with our enemies and fought us,

    A most wondrous thing that you have done.

  8. أحَرْبُنا حين أسَغْتَ الشَّجا

    وحِزْبُنا إذ ضافَك الحازبُ

    You waged war on us when you lent an ear to slander,

    While our party was your boon companion.

  9. هِيبَتْ لقومٍ شرَّةٌ فاجْتبُوا

    ولم يَهَبْ شِرَّتَنا هائبُ

    A wicked horde was revered, so they were chosen,

    While the reverence for our horde did not stir.

  10. وانصاعت الدعوةُ تِلْقاءَهُم

    وصابَ فيهم مُزنُها الصائبُ

    The call went out to them, perfectly directed,

    While its tip struck its mark among them.

  11. لا بِدْعَ إن الحرب مرقوبةٌ

    والسِّلمَ لا يرقُبُه راقبُ

    War is doomed, for the warrior is watched,

    And peace cannot be disturbed by the guardian.

  12. هذا على أنك ذو شيمةٍ

    يُدرُّها الماسحُ لا العاصبُ

    Despite this, your morals remain intact,

    Uncorrupted even by the zealous partisan.

  13. لا زلتَ مَنْ لا سَيْفُهُ ناكلٌ

    قِدْماً ومن لا بحرُه ناضبُ

    You still are one whose sword does not feed on flesh,

    And whose sea does not lack for rain.

  14. يا حَسْرتا للسارِقي يومَنا

    ولم يُصبهم مِخلَبٌ خالبُ

    Alas for the thieves of our time,

    Whose claws have not been cut by the avenger!

  15. ما غرَّهم منا ونحن الأُلى

    لم يُرَ في سلطانهم خاربُ

    What has emboldened them against us,

    When no ruiner of their reign appears?

  16. إن لم يُقيدونا بها مثلها

    فالشعر حُرٌّ إن نَجَوْا سائبُ

    If they do not restrain us likewise,

    Poetry is free, even if they walk safely.

  17. بل ليتَ شِعري عنك في أمسنا

    والظنُّ عن غيبِ الفتى ثاقبُ

    Rather, I wish I knew, in our past days,

    When guesses pierce the absence of the noble youth.

  18. هل قلتَ أخطأتم رماياكُمُ

    لا يلتقي الشارقُ والغاربُ

    Did you say: “You have missed your shots,

    The rising star does not meet the setting”?

  19. لَهْفي وقد جاءَتْكَ جفَّالةٌ

    كلٌّ مُغِذٌ ساغِبٌ لاغبُ

    My anxiety, since rude beggars came to you,

    Each greedy, rapacious, not content.

  20. ألا يُلاقوك فَتَلْقى بهم

    أكْلَ يتامى ما لهم كاسبُ

    Do they not meet with you, so you meet

    The plunder of orphans who have no breadwinner?

  21. من كلِّ شَحْذانِ الْحشا لُهْمُمٌ

    يأكل ما لا يحسِبُ الحاسبُ

    Among all the riffraff of rabble are villainous souls

    Who consume what no reckoner could calculate.

  22. فكَّاهُ كالعصرين من دهره

    كلاهما في شأنه دائبُ

    Fortune has turned him this way and that

    In both directions he persists.

  23. ذي مِعْدةٍ ثعلبُها لاحِس

    وتارةً أرنبُها ضاغبُ

    With the stomach of a fox, not feeling sated,

    And sometimes the greed of a rabbit.

  24. تعلوهُ حُمَّى شَرَهٍ نافضٌ

    لكنّ حُمّى هَضْمِهِ صالبُ

    A burning fever of greed shakes him,

    But the fever of his digestion is hardened.

  25. كأنما الفرُّوج في كفَّهِ

    فريسةٌ ضِرغامها داربُ

    As if the sacrificial animals are in his grip,

    Prey while his cauldron bubbles.

  26. وإن غدا الشَّبوط قِرْناً لهم

    فخدُّ شَبُّوطِهمُ التَّاربُ

    And if the onion became a horn for them,

    Still the cheek of their onion would peel.

  27. أقسمتُ لو أنك لاقيتَهُم

    نابَك من أضراسهم نائبُ

    I swear if you met them, your canines

    Would be worn down by their molars.

  28. أبشرْ بكرٍّ عاجلٍ إنني

    بالثَّأْرِ في أمثالها طالبُ

    Rejoice! Swift vengeance is near, I

    Am determined to retaliate likewise.

  29. لا تحسَبنِّي عنك في غَفْلةٍ

    عَوْدِي وشيكٌ أيها الصاحبُ

    Think me not heedless of you,

    My return, dear friend, is imminent.

  30. قلتُ لصحبي حين راوغْتَهم

    لا تحزنوا قد يشهدُ الغائبُ

    I said to my friends when you deceived them:

    “Do not grieve, the absent may yet witness.”

  31. سيصنعُ اللَّهُ لنا في غدٍ

    إن كان أكْدَى يومُنا الخائبُ

    God will grant us victory tomorrow,

    If today our lot is loss.

  32. كُرُّوا على الشيخ بتطفيلةٍ

    عن عَزْمةٍ كوكبُها ثاقبُ

    Attack the Shaykh with importunity,

    With steely resolve like the piercing star.

  33. وإن زَواهُ عنكُمُ جانبٌ

    فلا يَفُتْكُم ذلك الجانبُ

    Though a party has distanced you from him,

    Let not that party escape you.

  34. جُوسُوا عليه الأرضَ واستَخْبروا

    حتى يروحَ الخبرُ العازبُ

    Search the land, investigate,

    Until the elusive news comes out.

  35. لا تَنْجُوَنْ منكم فَراريجُهُ

    لا وَهَبَ المُنْجي لها الواهبُ

    Do not let his runaways escape you,

    Unless the grantor grants escape.

  36. لا تُفْلِتَنْ منكُم شَبَابيطُهُ

    لا أفلتَ الطَّامي ولا الراسبُ

    Do not let his rabble get away,

    Neither the blamer nor the delinquent.

  37. جُدُّوا فقد جَدَّ بكم لاعباً

    وقد يَجُدُّ الرجلُ اللاعبُ

    Be serious, for he has toyed with you,

    And a man may jest with the jester.

  38. ولْيَكُن الكرُّ على غِرَّةٍ

    والصيدُ في مأمنه ساربُ

    Let the attack be a surprise,

    While the prey feels secure in its refuge.

  39. مقالةٌ قمتُ بها خاطباً

    وقد يُصيبُ الغُرَّةَ الخاطبُ

    I have spoken seriously, addressing

    One who may surprise the unprepared.

  40. فاعتَزَمَ القومُ على غارةٍ

    ساندَ فيها الراجلَ الراكبُ

    So the people resolved on a raid,

    Where horseman aided footman.

  41. يَهْدي أبو عثمان كُردُوسَها

    هَداك ذاك الطاعنُ الضاربُ

    Abu Uthman directs its vanguard,

    May the thrusting striker guide you.

  42. يُرْقِلُ والرَّايَةُ في كفِّه

    قد حَفَّها الرامحُ والناشبُ

    Brandishing the banner in his hand,

    With spearman and swordsman surrounding.

  43. والقومُ لاقَوْكَ فأعْدِدْ لهم

    ما يَرْتضي الآكِلُ والشاربُ

    When they meet you, prepare for them

    What satisfies the eater and the drinker.

  44. يَسِّرْ فراريجَكَ مَقرونةً

    بها شبابيطُكَ يا كاتبُ

    Supply your runaways coupled

    With your rabble, O Scribe.

  45. تلك التي مَخْبَرُها ناعمٌ

    تلك التي منظرُها شاحبُ

    Those with delicate intelligence,

    And those with pallid demeanor.

  46. واذكُر بقلبٍ غيرِ مُسْتَوْهلٍ

    يعروهُ من ذِكْر القِرى ناخبُ

    Remember, with a heart not preoccupied,

    Which the recollection of towns makes weep,

  47. أنَّك من جيران قُطْرُبُّلٍ

    وعندك اللَّقحَةُ والحالبُ

    That you are a neighbor of Qutrubbul,

    Where you have dairy products and milkers.

  48. فاسْقِ حليبَ الكَرْم شُرَّابَهُ

    إذ ليس من شأنهمُ الرائبُ

    So pour the milk of bounty for their drinking,

    For plunder is not their habit.

  49. أحضِرْهُمُ البكْرَ التي ما اصطلت

    ناراً فكلٌّ خاطبٌ راغبُ

    Present to them the virgin who has not glimpsed

    A fire, each suitor eager.

  50. ليس التي يَخْطبُها المُتَّقي

    بل التي يخطبها الشاذبُ

    Not one courted by the virtuous man,

    But one courted by the immoral.

  51. تلك التي ما بايتَتْ راهباً

    إلا جفا قِنْدِيلَه الراهبُ

    One who never slept with a monk

    Except to extinguish his lamp, O monk!

  52. تلك التي ليس لها مُشْبهٌ

    في الكأس إلا الذهبُ الذائبُ

    One who has no peer but molten gold

    In her cup, so pliant.

  53. أو أمُّها الكبرى التي لم يزل

    للَّيل من طلعتها جائبُ

    Or her mature mother, who since she emerged

    Has confused night from her rising.

  54. حَقَّقها بالشمس أن رُبِّيَتْ

    في حِجْرها والشَّبَهُ الغالبُ

    Compare her to the sun, for she was reared

    In its embrace, the obvious resemblance.

  55. فهي ابنةُ الكَرْمِ وما إن يُرى

    إلا التي الشمسُ لها ناسِبُ

    For she is the daughter of bounty, and whenever she appears

    None resembles her but the befitting sun.

  56. أعجِبْ بتلك البِكْرِ محجوبةً

    مكروبةً يُجْلَى بها الكاربُ

    Marvel at that veiled virgin,

    Distressed, whom worry wrinkles,

  57. مغلوبةً في الدَّن مسلوبةً

    لها انتصارٌ غالبٌ سالبُ

    Subdued in the world, dispossessed,

    With overwhelming triumph stripping away.

  58. بينا تُرى في الزِّقِّ مسحوبةً

    إذ حَكَمَتْ أن يُسحَبَ الساحبُ

    You see her dragged through alleys,

    As she decided the puller would be pulled.

  59. تَقتصُّ من واترها صرْعةً

    ليس لها باكٍ ولا نادبُ

    Taking vengeance on her seducer,

    With none to weep or mourn for her,

  60. إلا حَمَامُ الأَيك في أيكِهِ

    أو عازفٌ للشَّرب أو قاصبُ

    Except the doves in her sanctuary,

    Or a drink-bearer, or a cup-pourer.

  61. ذاتُ نسيمٍ مسكُهُ فائحٌ

    وذاتُ لونٍ وَرْسُهُ خاضبُ

    Of gentle breeze, its musk fragrant,

    And of graceful figure, its bloom vivacious.

  62. هاتيك هاتيك على مثلها

    حامَ ولابَ الحائمُ اللائبُ

    The lasting bliss of her companion,

    And the pervasive agony of her abandoner.

  63. والنُّقْلُ والريحانُ من شأنهم

    فلا يَعِبْ فقدَهما عائبُ

    As if she and the abode smile together,

    While the lute throbs in her clutch.

  64. ولا تنمْ عن نرجسٍ مُؤْنسٍ

    يضحكُ عنه الزَّمَنُ القاطبُ

    An addict dancing in a garden,

    Answered by rustling for her.

  65. ريحانُ رُوحٍ مُنْهِبٍ عطرَهُ

    والروْحُ إذ ذاك هو الناهبُ

    Pour on them fine gifts in abundance,

    To fulfill the promise that deceives.

  66. لم يلفح الصيفُ له صفحةً

    ولا سقاه عُودهُ الشاسبُ

    Let there be no narrowness or hardship

    In what is granted them.

  67. قد ناصب الوردَ فمِنْ قولهِ

    لا يلتقي الشِّيعيُّ والناصبُ

    For we have not seen desolate pasture

    Without a grazing beast dwelling in it.

  68. وزَخْرِفِ البيتَ كما زُخرفتْ

    روضةُ حَزْنٍ جادها هاضبُ

    And then bestow on them thereafter

    What the sailor and boatman have gained.

  69. واجلُبْ لهم حَسناءَ في شدوها

    لكلِّ ما سرَّهُمُ جالبُ

    And repent for the sin that you came for,

    For it may be said: the penitent sinner!

  70. مُحسنةً ليست بخطَّاءة

    طائرُها الهادِلُ لا الناعبُ

    So they may say when you satisfy them:

    “Blessed is the retreating penitent!”

  71. بيضاءَ خُوْداً رِدْفُها ناهدٌ

    غيداءَ رُوداً ثديُها كاعبُ

    And if they hope for more, by their words:

    “Successful is this returning absentee!”

  72. مملوكةً بالسيف مَغْصوبةً

    لها دلالٌ مالِكٌ غاصبُ

    Make amends with a prosperous day among them,

    No reproacher of its like remains.

  73. تَستوهِبُ الجيد إذا أَتلعتْ

    من ظبيةٍ أَفْزَعها طالبُ

    Let it not be a day, once gone,

    Whose loss cannot be recovered by the departing.

  74. كأنَّ من عُولجَ من سِحرها

    زجاجةٌ يشعبُها شاعبُ

    Except as obligatory for them,

    Since entertaining them is a duty.

  75. نعيمُ من نادمها دائمٌ

    وبَرْحُ من فارقهَا واصبُ

    Hasten that for them, do not upset them,

    Nor burst forth at them, O burster!

  76. كأنها والبيتُ مُستضحِكٌ

    والعودُ في قَبْضتها صاخبُ

    For the man who disciplines his brothers

    Is not their disciplinarian, but well-mannered.

  77. أدْمانةٌ تَنْزِبُ في روضةٍ

    جاوبَها خِشْفٌ لها نازبُ

    You let us down, violating your promise,

    So do not strike us with your searing wind.

  78. واصبُبْ عليهم تُحفاً جَمَّةً

    يُحْمَى بهنَّ الموعدُ الكاذبُ

    Far be it from you to meet one seeking shelter

    While your clouds are thunder, not rain.

  79. ولا يكنْ فيما يُعانَى لهم

    ضِيقٌ ولا ما يَخْشِبُ الخاشبُ

    Or summon then assault them with guidance,

    For you, you are the triumphant warrior.

  80. فما رأيْنا مَرْتعاً مُجْدِباً

    إلا وفيه راتعٌ جادبُ

    That they may recall a pledged covenant

    In Ma’rib, even if Ma’rib is flooded.

  81. واغْرَمْ لهم من بعد ذا كُلِّه

    ما نفل الملّاحُ والقاربُ

    Leave erring unjustly in our matter,

    For the exemplary practices have shone bright.

  82. وتُبْ من الذنبِ الذي جئتَهُ

    فقد يُقالُ المذنبُ التائبُ

    Do not feed us your own guarded flesh,

    For it is not what the voracious desire.

  83. كيما يقولوا حين تُرضيهمُ

    يا حبذا المُنهزمُ التائبُ

    How can people eat the flesh of a man

    Whose words are fractures that break?

  84. وإن رَجَوْا أخرى فمن قولهم

    أفْلَحَ هذا الغائب الآيِبُ

    Know that people are of a mold

    Whose clay validates the tester.

  85. أعتِبْ بيومٍ صالحٍ فيهمُ

    ليس على أمثاله عاتبُ

    If not for curing people of their natures,

    The rotten would reek uncontrolled.

  86. ولا يكن يوماً إذا ما انقضى

    صِيحَ به لا رَجَعَ الذاهبُ

    And whoever tomorrow equals your glory

    Will bear what no carrier could carry.

  87. إلّا يكن ذاك لهم واجباً

    فإن تطفيلَهُمُ واجبُ

    So fight greed with the troops of munificence,

    Your clamor will be helped by sobbing.

  88. عَجِّلْ لهم ذاك ولا تَهْجُهم

    ولا يَثِبْ منك بهم واثبُ

    Seek worthless things and precious repute,

    For provisions pass while praise remains.

  89. فليس من يأدِبُ إخوانَهُ

    مؤَدِّباً للقومِ بل آدبُ

    This is all in jest, my brother,

    For your detractors, you rough and rugged rock.

  90. أخْلَفنا نَوْؤُك موعودَهُ

    فلا تصبنا ريحُك الحاصبُ

    So improve your wealth, for without it

    You are a lion, while adversaries snatch cubs.

  91. حاشاك أن يلقاك مُستمِطرٌ

    ومُزْنُكَ الصاعق لا الصائبُ

    The chosen brotherhood between us

    Has no fleck from another to mar it.

  92. أو فادْعُهُمْ ثم اهْجُهم راشداً

    وأنت أنت الجابر الحاربُ

    I swear, and truth deserves supremacy,

    If sympathizer meets with troublemaker,

  93. كي يذكروا من مأْرِبٍ معهداً

    إنْ غرِقت في سيلها مأرِبُ

    That you are of the elite of the elite,

    And are not for the fuelwood collector.

  94. دع عنك خبط الجور في أمرنا

    فقد أضاء السّنَن اللَّاحب

    So enjoy the beauties in a flourishing

    And well-protected reign that lacks change.

  95. لا تُطعمنَّا لحمك المتَّقَى

    فليس مما يأكل الساغبُ

  96. وكيف أكلُ الناسِ لحمَ امرىء

    مِقْوَلُهُ صَمْصَامَةٌ قاضبُ

  97. واعلم بأنَّ الناسَ من طينةٍ

    يصدق في الثلب لها الثالبُ

  98. لولا عِلاجُ الناسِ أخلاقَهُم

    إذاً لفاح الجمأُ اللازبُ

  99. ومن غدا مثلك في مجده

    حُمِّل ما لا يحمل الصاقبُ

  100. فقاتِل الشُّحَّ بجند النّدى

    يُنْصَرْ عليه إلبُكَ الآلبُ

  101. واغرَمْ حُطاماً واغتنمْ سمعةً

    فالزادُ ماضٍ والثّنا راتبُ

  102. هذا مزاحٌ يا أخي كُلُّهُ

    لشانئيك الشَجَبُ الشاجبُ

  103. فاستصلحِ المالَ فمن دونِهِ

    أُسْدٌ عليها الأشَبُ الآشبُ

  104. إن الإخاء المصطفى بيننا

    ليس له من غيره شائبُ

  105. أقسمتُ والحق له فضلُهُ

    إذا الْتَقَى المحتجُّ والشاغبُ

  106. أنَّك ممّا يجتني المجتني

    ولستَ ممّا يحطِبُ الحاطبُ

  107. فاعمَرْ من النعماء في دولةٍ

    منصورةٍ ليس لها قالبُ
