1. أنت فضلٌ وفضلةُ الشيء لغو

    ثم أُردفْتَ ذلّة التصغيرِ

    You are excess and the excess of a thing is vain

    Then you were followed by the humbleness of diminution

  2. حُقّر الفضل ثم صُغّر عنهُ

    زادك الله يا صغير الحقير

    The excess was belittled then made smaller than it

    May Allah increase you, O tiny despicable one

  3. ثم أُعرِجْتَ فاحتواك انتقاصٌ

    في است سوءٍ وجسم سوء ضرير

    Then you limped so shortcoming contained you

    In an evil condition and a wretched blind body

  4. ثم بُرِّدتَ فانتصفتَ من النا

    ر ببردٍ يُربي على الزمهرير

    Then you were cooled so you got relief from the fire

    With a coolness that is nurtured by the bitter cold

  5. فقبول النفوس إياك عندي

    آيةٌ فيك للطيف الخبير

    So people's acceptance of you in my view

    Is a sign in you of the Subtle, the Expert

  6. إن قوماً أصبحت تَنفُق فيهم

    لعلى خُطّةٍ من التسخير

    That a people have become, you move about among them

    Perhaps according to a plan of subjugation

  7. أو أناس غدوا وراحوا من الظّر

    ف على حالة الفقير الوقير

    Or people who have come and gone, sought refuge

    In the state of the poor, dignified, calm one

  8. فمتى ظُفِّروا بزُور ظريفٍ

    أعجبتْهم زخارف التزوير

    So when they are coated with elegant lies

    They are amazed by the adornments of fraud

  9. كالأعاريب لم يروْا درْمك البُر

    رِ فهم يُكبرون خبز الشعير

    Like bedouins who have not seen your splendid pearls

    So they glorify barley bread

  10. وكذا القوم لم يروا لجة البح

    ر فهم يُعظِمون ماء الغديرِ

    And so the people have not seen the radiance of the sea

    Yet they extol the water of the pond

  11. يا ثقيلاً على القلوب خفيفاً

    في الموازين دون وزن النقير

    O heavy upon hearts, light

    In scales, less than the weight of carob

  12. طِرْ سخيفاً وقَعْ مَقيتَاً فطوراً

    كسفاةٍ وتارة كثبير

    Wretched, fallen condemned, soon passing

    Like chaff and at times like motes

  13. أُشهِدُ اللَه أن وزنك عندي

    دون وزن النقير والقِطمير

    I swear by God that your weight to me

    Is less than the weight of carob and seeds

  14. لست حاشاك بالحقير ولكن

    أنت لا شك من حقير الحقير

    I do not think you despicable but without doubt

    You are from the most despicable of the despicable
