1. رأيتُ حمَّالاً مُبينَ العمى

    يعثر بالأكْم وفي الوَهْدِ

    I saw a blind porter stumbling

    Among valleys and pits

  2. مُحتَمِلاً ثِقْلاً على رأْسه

    تضعُفُ عنه قُوَّةُ الجَلْدِ

    Bearing a heavy load on his head

    Too much for his skin's endurance

  3. بين جِمَالات وأشباهِها

    من بَشَرٍ نامُوا عن المجْدِ

    Among lazy good-for-nothings

    Who slept away from glory

  4. أضحى بأَخْزى حالةٍ بينهم

    وكلُّهم في عيشةٍ رغْدِ

    He lives in shameful condition among them

    Though all live in luxury

  5. وكلهم يَصْدِمُه عامداً

    أو تائهَ اللُّبِّ بلا عمدِ

    Each one bumps into him intentionally

    Or wanders about without purpose

  6. والبائسُ المسكِينُ مستسْلِمٌ

    أذلُّ للمكروه من عبْدِ

    Yet the miserable wretch submits

    More servile than any slave

  7. وما اشْتهى ذاك ولكنَّه

    فرَّ من اللُّؤْم إلى الجَهْدِ

    Not that he desired this but

    He fled hardship for effort

  8. فَرَّ إلى الحْملِ على ضعفه

    من كَلَحات المُكْثِر الوغْدِ

    He fled to bear his burden in weakness

    From stinginess of the glutton

  9. فَعُذْتُ من أمْثال أحْوالِهِ

    باللّه والحُرِّ أبي سَعْدِ

    So I seek refuge in Allah and the free man

    My father Saad the generous

  10. السَّبِطِ الكفِّ الذي لم يزل

    مُسْتَمْطِرُوهُ في ثَرىً جعْدِ

    The steadfast, open-handed one who

    Is always watered in fertile Jad

  11. الصّادِقِ الوعْدِ على أنه

    ما زال فعَّالاً بلا وعْدِ

    The trustworthy one true to his word

    Though he acts without promises

  12. الوارِثِ السُّؤْدَد أسْلافُهُ

    ذي المجد من قَبْلٍ ومن بعْدِ

    The inheritor of glorious ancestors

    Of glory before and after

  13. العاسِف المالَ لِسُؤَّاله

    والسالك الرأيَ على القصْدِ

    Who spends wealth freely when asked

    And takes the middle course

  14. الدائم العهْدِ ولكنَّه

    يصْعد من عهْد إلى عهْدِ

    Loyal in covenant but he

    Ascends from covenant to covenant

  15. مستبدِلاً عهْداً بما دُونه

    والعزْمُ منْهُ ثابتُ العَقْدِ

    Exchanging one covenant for another

    His resolve firmly tied

  16. المُبْرِقِ البشرَ الملِثِّ الجَدَا

    مُجانباً قَعْقَعَةَ الرعْدِ

    The brilliant witty one, loud thunder

    Avoids idle prattle

  17. يستكتم العُرفَ على أنه

    يُفشيه في غوْرٍ وفي نجدِ

    He hides his nobility yet spreads it

    In wilderness and settlement

  18. من أجْحَدِ الناس لنعمى له

    تزداد إسْفاراً على الجَحْدِ

    The most stubborn people for blessings on him

    Grow blinder in ingratitude
