1. أحمدُ اللّه حمدَ شاكرِ نُعْمَى

    قابلٍ شُكر ربِّه غيرِ آبِ

    I praise Allah with thanks of a grateful one

    Repaying his Lord’s blessings, not denying them

  2. طار قومٌ بخفَّة الوزن حتى

    لحقوا رفْعَةً بقاب العُقابِ

    A people flew lightly till

    They attained high ranks, the zenith of glory

  3. ورسا الراجحون من جِلَّةِ النا

    س رسوَّ الجبال ذات الهضابِ

    While the distinguished ones among the people

    Descended the mountain slopes and plateaus

  4. وَلَما ذاك للِّئامِ بفَخْرٍ

    لا ولا ذاك للكرام بعابِ

    That’s not for the vile out of pride

    Nor is this for the noble out of dignity

  5. هكذا الصخرُ راجحُ الوزن راسٍ

    وكذا الذرُّ شائُل الوزنِ هابِ

    Thus is the weighty boulder set firm

    And the light pebble descends, falls

  6. فليَطِرْ معشرٌ ويعلوا فإني

    لا أراهم إلا بأسفل قابِ

    So let a band fly high, I see them

    Only at the lowest bottom

  7. لا أعدُّ العلوَّ منهم عُلوَّاً

    بل طُفُوّاً يمينَ غيرِ كِذابِ

    I do not count their elevation an ascent

    Rather buoyancy without lying

  8. جيفٌ أنتنت فأضحتْ على اللُّجـ

    ـجَة والدُّرُّ تحتها في حجابِ

    A carcass rotted and lay atop refuse

    While the pearl underneath veil and cover

  9. وغُثاءٌ علا عُباباً من اليمـ

    ـمِ وغاص المَرْجانُ تحت العُبابِ

    And scum rose over clear water

    And coral sank beneath the turbid

  10. ورعاعٌ تغلَّبوا بزمانٍ

    أنا فيه وفيهُم ذو اغترابِ

    And rabble prevailed in an era

    I feel estranged amongst them

  11. غلبوني به على كل حظٍّ

    غيرَ حظٍّ يفوتُ كلَّ اغتصابِ

    They overwhelmed me in it over every fortune

    Except a fortune escaping all grasp

  12. إنني مؤمنٌ وإني أخو الحق

    قِ عليمٌ بفَرْعهِ والنِّصابِ

    I’m a believer and brother of Truth

    Knowledgeable of its ways and laws

  13. قلت إن تغلبوا بغالِب مغلو

    بٍ فحسبي بغالبِ الغَلّابِ

    I said: If they overcome by an overwhelming victor

    Then my victory suffices, the Omnipotent’s victory

  14. وبِخلٍّ إذا اختللتُ رعاني

    بالذي بيننا من الأسبابِ

    And by a miser, when I slip

    Regarding that between us reasons and causes

  15. كأبي سهلٍ المُسَهِّلِ مأتَى

    كلِّ عُرْفٍ وفاتحِ الأبوابِ

    Accountant thinker, he has made

    Proportion between me and him in accounting

  16. يا ابن نوبختٍ المَزُورَ على البُخْـ

    ـت تَغَالَى في سيرها والعِرابِ

    He does not cease from repaying me

    If the days favor me or punish me

  17. أنا شاكٍ إليك بعضَ ثِقاتي

    فافهم اللحنَ فهو كالإعرابِ

    Whenever time is good he refuses kindness

    Oh what strange wonder!

  18. لي صديقٌ إذا رأى لي طعاماً

    لم يكد أن يجودَ لي بالشرابِ

    Oh Abu Sahl easy access

    To hopes of seekers

  19. فإذا ما رآهما لي جميعاً

    كفياني لديه لُبسَ الثيابِ

    The admirable youth to unravel issues

    When complicated and parse discourse

  20. فمتى ما رأى الثلاثة عندي

    فهْي حسبي لديه من آرابي

    Why when time benevolently provides

    Do I miss your kindness, experience your disdain?

  21. لا يراني أهلاً لِملْكِ الظَّهاري

    يِ ولا موضعَ العطايا الرِّغابِ

    Do you see time not amazed by your refusal

    If I intend its rebuke while it grants favor?

  22. وكأني في ظَنهِ ليس شأني

    لَهْوُ ذي نُهيَةٍ ولا مُتصابِ

    And your aloofness when it draws near

    Though it should request clouds’ downpour?

  23. فيَّ طبعٌ ملائكيٌّ لديهِ

    عازفٌ صادفٌ عن الإطرابِ

    Why when you see my time irrigate me

    With sins not water me with gifts?

  24. أو حماريَّةٌ فمقدارُ حظّي

    شَبعةٌ عندهُ بلا إتعابِ

    Where are your competitions known

    Among the people of merit?

  25. إنما حظيَ اللَّفاءُ لديهِ

    مَع ما فيهِ بي مِنَ الإعجابِ

    Where are your evaluations known

    Among the people of minds?

  26. ليس ينفكُّ شاهداً لي بفهمٍ

    وبيانٍ وحكمةٍ وصوابِ

    Difficulties exposed you, so you recoiled

    From the diving steadfast swift

  27. ومتى كان فتحُ بابٍ من اللَّـ

    ـه توقعتُ منهُ إغلاق بابِ

    Where is a horse too hard to bridle

    Charging to confront eagles?

  28. كاتبٌ حاسبٌ فقد عامل الخل

    لَةَ بيني وبينهُ بالحسابِ

    Is it justice that you count a lot

    For me what you resent for time?

  29. ليس ينفكّ من قِصاصي إذا أحـ

    ـسنَ دهرٌ إليَّ أو من عقابي

    Do you see me beneath the sublime that attained

    Wishes of authority and writers?

  30. كلما أحسن الزمانُ أبَى الإحـ

    ـسانَ يا للعُجابِ كلِّ العجابِ

    And merchants like cattle succeeded

    In desire and beloved ones?

  31. أحمدُ اللَّه يا أبا سهلٍ السه

    لَ مرامِ النوال للطُلّابِ

    Vulgarity covers them but

    Under it lies pagan ignorance of nomads

  32. والفتى المُرتجَى لفصل القَضايا

    عند إشكالها وفصلِ الخطابِ

    They play in a time’s shadow

    Equally foolish, jesters

  33. لِمْ إذا أقبل الزمانُ بإخصا

    بٍ تربّعتُ منك في إجدابِ

    Not defending with swords or pens

    A place of glory, just flies’ buzzing

  34. أترى الدهرَ ليس يُعجب من هَيْـ

    ـجك عتبي إذا نوى إعتابي

    No guardian of a sanctuary among them

    Nor a steadfast bookkeeper

  35. وتجافيكَ حين يعطفُ والوا

    جبُ أن تستهلَّ مثل السحابِ

    Falsely labeled ‘Trustworthy’

    While termites ruin ruins

  36. أفلا إذا رأيتَ دهري سقاني

    بِذَنوبٍ سقيتني بِذنابِ

    Liars flatter, but God knows them

    Witnesses of oppression and blame

  37. أين منك المنافساتُ اللواتي

    عَهِدَ الناسُ من ذوي الأحسابِ

    Their names have replaced titles

    In fact, the vilest names

  38. أين منك المقايساتُ اللواتي

    عَهِدَ الناسُ من ذوي الألبابِ

    The best of them, no good in them

    Is not backbiting the flawed

  39. ما هنَاتٌ تعرَّضتْ لك فَلَّتْ

    منك شُؤبوبَ سابحٍ وَثَّابِ

    Luxuriating forever in extravagance

    Among lovely tender fair maidens

  40. أين عن مُعْرِقٍ من الخيلِ طرفٍ

    عزَّ إحضارُهُ اقتحامَ العُقابِ

    Them are singing girls delighting hearing

    And cupbearers with cups

  41. أمن العدلِ أن تعُدَّ كثيراً

    ليَ ما تستقلُّ للأوقابِ

    Fruits for their desires

    And aged women resembling ravens

  42. أتُراني دون الأُلى بلغوا الآ

    مالَ من شُرطةٍ ومن كُتّابِ

    Old bags when they relax

    Wear aprons over their humps

  43. وتِجارٍ مثل البهائمِ فازوا

    بالمنى في النفوس والأحبابِ

    Daughter of bounty circled by bounty

    Firebrand vintage abundant grapes

  44. فيهمُ لُكنةُ النَّبيط ولكنْ

    تحتها جاهليَّةُ الأعرابِ

    A crystal cup of aquamarine amidst

    A spring of rubies, glowing embers

  45. أصبحوا يلعبون في ظلِّ دهرٍ

    ظاهِر السُّخْف مثلهم لَعَّابِ

    Over cups of Gaindah leaving sober

    One whose head an ignorant raven

  46. غيرَ مُغنين بالسيوف ولا الأقْـ

    ـلامِ في موطنٍ غَنَاءَ ذُبابِ

    Her cup color, she stands

    Color of her glowing ruby

  47. ليس فيهم مُدافعٌ عن حريمٍ

    لا ولا قائمٌ بصدر كتابِ

    Foam on her cup rivals

    What crowns her hair of that foam

  48. مُتَسمّين بالأمانة زوراً

    والمَناتينُ أخربُ الخُرَّابِ

    She carries the cup and jewelry appearing

    Tempting all onlookers and drinkers

  49. كاذبي المادحين يعلمُه اللَّ

    هُ عُدول الهُجاة والعُيَّابِ

    With a cupbearer circulating his hands

    Delightfully drawing delightful drafts

  50. شَغَلتْ موضعَ الكُنى لا بلِ الأسْـ

    ـماء منهم قبائحُ الألقابِ

    Taste of drink and kiss of lips

    Inviting passion, answered supplications

  51. خيرُ ما فيهُم ولا خيرَ فيهم

    أنهم غيرُ آثمي المُغتابِ

    Around her, eyes of a gazelle

    Whose hunting never misses lions in the jungle

  52. ويظلون في المنَاعم واللذ

    ذاتِ بين الكواعب الأَترابِ

    The beautiful hands enhance

    The eye before she serves and necks’ beauty after

  53. لَهُمُ المُسمِعَاتُ ما يُطربُ السا

    معَ والطائفاتُ بالأكوابِ

    So a mouth drinks pure wine

    And a gaze drinks the juice of fresh dew

  54. نَعَمٌ ألبستهُمُ نِعَمُ اللَّـ

    ـه ظلالَ الغصون منها الرِّطابِ

    And their drink's blend, if they taste it

    Is a gentle pounding. Beautiful pounding!

  55. حين لا يشكرونها وهي تَنمي

    لا ولا يكفرونها بارتقابِ

    Of companions as if they are companions

    Flowing down from the water of torment

  56. إن تلك الغصونَ عندي لتُضحي

    ظالماتٍ فهل لها من متابِ

    Wearing transparent clothes

    Like gentle air or drafts

  57. ما أُبالي أأثمرتْ لاجتناءٍ

    بعد هذا أم أيبستْ لاحتطابِ

    And radiant jewels clothing them

    Torches aflame with fires

  58. كم لديهم لِلَهوِهِم من كَعابٍ

    وعجوزٍ شبيهةٍ بالكَعابِ

    You see the water then the fire and then

    Those cheeks and wrists

  59. خَنْدَريس إذا تراخت مَداها

    لبست جِدّةً على الأحقابِ

    The night fears their movements, so it departs

    Though your state is isolation

  60. بنتُ كرمٍ تُديرها ذاتُ كَرْم

    موقَدِ النحرِ مثمرِ الأعنابِ

    Faces as if they are suns

    And full moons risen from clouds' veil

  61. حِصْرِمٌ من زَبرجدٍ بين نَبْعٍ

    من يواقيت جمرُها غيرُ خابِ

    The Pleiades bid them peace

    When they by their delicate beauty warrant tears

  62. فوقَ لَبّاتِ غادةٍ تترك الخا

    ليَ من كلّ صَبوةٍ وهْو صابِ

    Faces constantly targeted but never

    Hit by the shooting arrows

  63. ما اكتستْ شَيْبَةً سوى نظمِها الدُّر

    رَ على رأسها البَهيمِ الغرابي

    Rather the arrows recoil blunted

    Striking hearts, no penetration

  64. لونُ ناجودِها إذا هي قامت

    لون ياقوتها المضيءِ الثقابِ

    Nobility and charm are granted those

    Infants and kin

  65. وعلى كأسها حَبابٌ يُباري

    ما على رأسها بذاك الحبابِ

    Swaying with the branches’ gentle rustle

    And trees' shaking, delicate bodies

  66. دُرُّ صهباءَ قد حكى دُرَّ بيضا

    ءَ عَروبٍ كَدمْيةِ المحرابِ

    Gazelles with languid eyes resist

    Their charming with coquetry

  67. تحملُ الكأس والحُلِيَّ فتبدو

    فتنة الناظرين والشُرَّابِ

    If you saw the people amongst them, you would

    Surely force to declare openly, not feign

  68. يالها ساقياً تُدير يداه

    مُستطاباً يُنالُ من مُستطابِ

    Of people unacceptable as slaves

    While at masters’ stations

  69. لَذةُ الطَّعمِ في يَدَيْ لذّةِ الملْـ

    ـثَمِ تدعو الهوى دعاءَ مُجابِ

    Their case is like one owning phantoms

    Though water poured on poles

  70. حولَها مِنْ نِجَارِها عينُ رملٍ

    ليس ينفكُّ صَيدُها أُسدَ غابِ

    And so is the lowly, lowly world

    Daring to confront the discourse of masters

  71. يُونقُ العينَ حسنُ ما في أَكُفٍّ

    ثَمَّ تَسقي وحُسْنُ ما في رقابِ

    Empowered with shoes of Maysir and Tiyat

    While our companions atop bare mounts

  72. ففمٌ شاربٌ رحيقاً وطَرفٌ

    شاربٌ ماءَ لَبّةٍ وسِخابِ

    Like Son of Imam whom time’s foolishness

    Left perplexed and confused

  73. وَمزاجُ الشَّراب إن حاولوا المز

    جَ رُضابٌ يا طيبَ ذاك الرُّضابِ

    A young man, if you saw him, your eye would see

    Wisdom and intelligence in his clothes

  74. من جَوارٍ كأنهنَّ جَوارٍ

    يتسلسلنَ من مياهٍ عِذابِ

    Time stripped him of what it clothed people

    Except his flesh and furs

  75. لابساتٍ من الشفوف لَبوساً

    كالهواء الرّقيق أو كالشرابِ

    Or the jewels of his sophistication

    Which if he could, he would sell for a sack

  76. ومن الجوهرِ المضيءِ سناهُ

    شُعلاً يلتهبنَ أيَّ الْتهابِ

    Bad, bad is company of worldly life

    That provoked one like him from companions

  77. فترى الماءَ ثَمَّ والنارَ والآ

    لَ بتلك الأبشارِ والأسلابِ

    My soul yearns for swords dispelling

    Anger of champions, sharp blades

  78. يوجسُ الليلُ رِكزَهُنَّ فينجا

    بُ وإن كان حالِكَ الجِلبابِ

    Washing the earth with blood until

    Its dust becomes purified soil

  79. عن وجوهٍ كأَنهنَّ شموسٌ

    وبدورٌ طلعنَ غبَّ سحابِ

    Of dogs, the farthest from loyalty

    More treasonous than wolves

  80. سالمتْها الأَندابُ وهي من الرِّق

    قَةِ أَوْلى الوجوهِ بالأندابِ

    Pouncing on gazelles, weak

    From lions pouncing ferociously

  81. أوجهٌ لا تزال تُرمَى ولا تَدْ

    مَى على كثرةِ السّهام الصِّيابِ

    Officers enabled to earn white bread

    Not by their merits, rather gain

  82. بل تَرُدُّ السَهام مُنكفئاتٍ

    فتصيبُ القلوبَ غيرَ نوابِ

    From gentle prey those women who

    Leave seekers in agony

  83. جُعِلَ النُّبْلُ والرَّشاقةُ حظَّيْ

    نِ لتلك الأكفالِ والأقرابِ

    So when people are amazed, they say

    Do gazelles hunt without dogs?

  84. فتمايلنَ باهتزازِ غصونٍ

    ناعمَاتٍ وبارتجاج روابي

    Oblivious to people’s passion

    Though their rope frays

  85. ناهداتٍ مطرّفاتٍ يمانع

    نك رُمَّانَهُنَّ بالعُنَّابِ

    Engrossed in matters, wines, musk perfume

    Sesame oil, chamomile, and antimony

  86. لو تَرى القومَ بينهنّ لأجبر

    تَ صُراحاً ولم تقلْ باكتسابِ

    In brocade embroidered

    With gold, and fine fabrics

  87. من أناسٍ لا يُرْتَضون عبيداً

    وهمُ في مراتبِ الأربابِ

    In saffron, sandalwood and Indian ambergris

    Spread on cheek and beard as dye

  88. حالُهُمْ حالُ من له دارتِ الأف

    لاكُ واستوسقتْ على الأقطابِ

    Them are hyacinths’ tails so white

    Rivaling alloyed gold’s ingots

  89. وكذاك الدنيا الدنيَّةُ قدراً

    تتصدَّى لأَلأم الخُطّابِ

    I would not be without these riches

    If time was equitable in its gifts

  90. مُكِّنوا من رحالِ مَيْسٍ وطيئا

    تٍ وأصحابُنا على الأقتابِ

    You are fair in that but have denied

    And supported every wrong, unjust person

  91. كابن عمارٍ الذي تركتْهُ

    حَمَقَاتُ الزمان كالمُرتابِ

    Bring what the days brought of injustice

    And bring from you the stick of punishment

  92. من فتىً لو رَأيتَهُ لرأتْ عيْ

    ناك عِلماً وحِكمةً في ثيابِ

    May God destroy or evenly engulf our time

    For it has totally flipped

  93. بزَّه الدهرُ ما كسا الناسَ إلا

    ما عليه من لَحمه والإهابِ

    Feeding the vocal its tyranny’s fodder

    And the braying sheer nonsense

  94. أو حُلى ظَرْفهِ التي نَحَستْهُ

    فلو اسطاع باعها بجِرابِ

    Then meets the wise whom it makes

    Sway in its passions each and every day

  95. سوءةً سوءةً لصُحبة دنيا

    أسخطتْ مثلَه من الأصحابِ

    Deviating in its desires judging falsely

    Against the prophets for the factions

  96. لهفَ نفسي على مَناكيرَ للنُّك

    رِ غضابٍ ذوي سيوف عِضابِ

    Not considering truth that only those

    Of corrupt minds overflow in wealth

  97. تغسِلُ الأرضَ بالدماء فتُضحى

    ذاتَ طُهرٍ تُرابُها كالمَلابِ

    Not counting the ignorant’s abundance much

    Though numerous as dust

  98. من كلابٍ نأى بها كلَّ نأْيٍ

    عن وفاءِ الكلابِ غدرُ الذئابِ

    When it sees a bearer of knowledge’s

    Livelihood for a day, it sees him prosper

  99. واثباتٍ على الظِّباء ضِعافٍ

    عن وثابِ الأسود يومَ الوِثابِ

    But when it sees his living for a month

    It counts him owning property in his prime

  100. شُرَطٌ خُوِّلوا عقائل بيضاً

    لا بأحسابهم بل الإكتسابِ

    Do not persist in punishing me

    When time treats me well

  101. من ظباءِ الأنيس تلك اللواتي

    تترك الطالبين في أنصابِ

    For perhaps its prosperity leads

    What the Bestower grants me

  102. فإذا ما تعجّبَ الناسُ قالوا

    هل يصيد الظباء غيرُ الكلابِ

    So when you cut ties, the gifts’ ties are cut

    For all companions

  103. أصبحوا ذاهلين عن شَجَن النا

    س وإن كان حبلُهم ذا اضطرابِ

    Many blessed gifts for you

    Could have led gifts comfortably to me

  104. في أمورٍ وفي خمورٍ وسمُّو

    رٍ وفي قاقُمٍ وفي سِنْجابِ

    Matters facilitated and matters

    Unlocked by your keys and means

  105. وتهاويلَ غير ذاك من الرَّقْ

    م ومن سُندسٍ ومن زِرْيابِ

    Do not counter my fortune with you

    With rejection or doubting my sincerity

  106. في حَبيرٍ مُنمنَمٍ وعَبيرٍ

    وصِحانٍ فسيحةٍ ورِحابِ

    Restrain self-conceit that my hope

    In you equal an idolater's hope

  107. في ميادين يخترقن بساتي

    ن تمسُّ الرؤوس بالأهدابِ

    My duty is to see your response to my blame

    So do not make silence my response

  108. ليس ينفكُّ طيرُها في اصطحابٍ

    تحت أظلالِ أيكها واصطخابِ

    Then you will be the one who dodged

    Blows with swords' sides

  109. من قرينَيْنِ أصبحا في غِناءٍ

    وفريدين أصبحا في انتحابِ

    In that you deny me some displeasure

    And insult me, lies my displeasure

  110. بين أفنانها فواكه تَشفي

    من تَداوَى بها من الأوصابِ

    You used to bestow good then deny

    So I blamed you inclusively

  111. في ظلالٍ من الحرور وأَكنا

    نٍ من القُرِّ جَمَّةِ الحُجَّابِ

    So repent and redo deeds

    The ancestors consent for posterity

  112. عندهم كلُّ ما اشتهوْهُ من الآ

    كال والأَشْرِبات والأشوابِ

  113. والطَّروقاتِ والمراكبِ والوِل

    دانِ مثلِ الشَّوادنِ الأسرابِ

  114. واليَلَنْجوجِ في المجامر والند

    دِ ترى نشرَهُ كمثلِ الضبابِ

  115. والغوالي وعَنبرِ الهندِ والمسـ

    ـك على الهام واللِّحَى كالخضابِ

  116. ولديهم وذَائلُ الفِضَضِ البي

    ضُ تباهي سبائكَ الأَذهابِ

  117. لم أكُن دون مالكي هذه الأم

    لاكِ لو أنصفَ الزمانُ المُحابي

  118. أنت طَبٌّ بذاك لكن تغابيْـ

    ـتَ وحابيتَ كلَّ كابٍ ونابِ

  119. آتياً ما أتى الزمانُ من الظل

    مِ وهاتيك منك سوطُ عذابِ

  120. قاتَل اللَّه دهرَنا أو رماهُ

    باستواءٍ فقد غدا ذا انقلابِ

  121. يَعْلِفُ الناطقين من جَوْره الأجْـ

    ـلالَ والناهقين محضَ اللُّبابِ

  122. ثم تَلقى الحكيمَ فيه يُمالي

    كلَّ وغدٍ على ذوي الآدابِ

  123. جانحاً في هواهُ يَحكم بالحَيْـ

    ـفِ على الأنبياء للأحزابِ

  124. لا يَعُدُّ الصوابَ أن تغمر الثرْ

    وةَ إلا ذوي العقولِ الخرَابِ

  125. غيرَ مستكثرٍ كثيراً لذي الجهْـ

    ـل وإن كان في عديد الترابِ

  126. وإذا ما رأى لحامِلِ علمٍ

    قوتَ يومٍ رآه ذا إخصابِ

  127. فمتى ما رأى له قوتَ شهرٍ

    عدَّهُ المَلْكَ في اقتبال الشبابِ

  128. لا تُصَمِّمْ على عقابك إيَّا

    يَ إذا أحسن الزمانُ ثوابي

  129. فعسى يُمْنُ ما تُنيلُ هو القا

    ئِدُ نحوي مواهبَ الوَهَّابِ

  130. فمتى ما قَطَعْتَهُ جرَّ قطعاً

    للعطايا من سائر الأصحابِ

  131. كم نوالٍ مباركٍ لك قد قا

    د نوالاً إليَّ طوعَ الجنابِ

  132. وأُمورٍ تيسّرت وأُمورٍ

    بالمفاتيح منك والأسبابِ

  133. لا تُقابِلْ تَيَمُّني بك بالرد

    دِ ولا الظنَّ فيك بالإكذابِ

  134. فاحْمَ أنفاً لأنْ يُعَدَّ مُرجِّي

    كَ سواءً وعابدُ الأنصابِ

  135. واجبي أن أرى جوابيَ عُتبا

    كَ فلا تجعلِ السكوتَ جوابي

  136. فتكونَ الذي تَنصَّل بالمُنْـ

    ـصُلِ من ضربةٍ بصَفْح القِرابِ

  137. إن في أنْ تَعُقُّني بعضَ إغضا

    بي وفي أن تُهينَني إغضابي

  138. كنتَ تأتي الجميلَ ثم تنكَّرْ

    تَ فعاتبتُ مُجملاً في العتابِ

  139. فأتَنِفْ توبةً وراجعْ فعالاً

    ترتضيهِ الأسلافُ للأعقابِ
