عزت مطالب دنيا كلِّ ذي أدبٍ

وهان مطلب دنيا الأنوَكِ الخَرِقِ

The demands of this world are honorable to every person of dignity,

Yet the demands of this fleeting world are insignificant.

وقدر الله فيها أن يذللها

فهان مطلبها للجاهل الحمق

It is the will of God that it be made easy,

Thus its demands are foolish to the ignorant and stupid.

فليس ينفك ذو علم وتجربة

من مأكل جشب أو مشرب رنق

So one who is knowledgeable and experienced

Cannot avoid meager food or elegant drink.

وذو الجهالة منها في بلهنية

من مسمع حسن أو منظر أنق

And the ignorant one is lost in its distractions

Of pleasing sounds or graceful sights.

تبارك العدل فيها حين يقسمها

بين البرية قسماً غير متفق

Blessed is justice in dividing it

Among creation in ways beyond accord.
