1. أيّها السيدُ الذي اختاره السيْ

    يِدُ إلفاً وموضعاً للخِلالِ

    O master whom the Master chose as a companion and dwelling for virtues,

    None guided you to the Guide except the sincerity of that guidance and favor.

  2. لم يوفقْكَ للموفّق إلا

    صدقُ ذاك التوفيق والإقبالِ

    God gathered in you, for the supporter of religion,

    Praiseworthy traits among all traits.

  3. جمعَ اللَّهُ فيك للناصرِ الدي

    نَ خصالاً حميدةً في الخصالِ

    In you is, for onlookers and the heart, a share

    Of beautiful sights, despite any envious slanderer.

  4. فيك للناظرين والقلبِ حظَّا

    ن على رغم حاسدٍ مغتالِ

    A wondrous sight of beauty,

    Under which lies an informer of generosity abounding.

  5. منظرٌ معجِبٌ من الحسنِ حالٍ

    تحته مخبرٌ من الفضلِ حالي

    And if the companion were to adorn himself,

    Would he refuse to be sold for equals?

  6. وإذا ما الجليسُ حُلّيَ هاتي

    ن أبى أن يُباعَ بالأبدالِ

    You are a spectacle and hearing, whatever is in you

    Gladdens the heart of one aggrieved by care.

  7. أنت مرأىً ومسمعٌ كلٌّ ما في

    ك مُسلٍّ لهمّ ذي الهَمِّ جالي

    In you is seriousness for one in earnest and jest

    Not like the jest of jesters, the futile.

  8. فيك جدٌّ لمنْ أجدَّ وهزلٌ

    لا كهزلِ المُهازلِ البطَّالِ

    God and the Commander witnessed together,

    And the knowledgeable Minister of conditions,

  9. شهدَ اللَّهُ والأميرُ جميعاً

    والوزيرُ الخبيرُ بالأحوالِ

    That you are an easygoing companion, light

    On the heart, though weighty in the scales.

  10. أنك الصاحبُ الخفيفُ على القل

    بِ وإن كنت راجحَ المثقالِ

    You are not burdensome to any onlooker, nor are you

    A heavy thought on any mind.

  11. لستَ في ناظرٍ قذاهُ ولا أن

    تَ على خاطرٍ من الأثقالِ

    The Commander chooses you for intimacy and companionship

    In times of barefaced, intractable adversity.

  12. يصطفيك الأميرُ للأنسِ والعَوْ

    نِ على الحادث العياءِ العُضالِ

    And indeed each of you two are to his brother

    The image of people of perfection, people of perfection.

  13. وحقيقٌ كلاكما بأخيه

    شكلُ أهلِ الكمالِ أهلُ الكمالِ

    So the nights of our Commander are with you

    Delightful, like their dawns with shade.

  14. فليالي أميرِنا بكَ في الطِّي

    بِ كأسحارِها ذواتِ الظلالِ

    And the days of his fate are with you a spirit

    Like the spirit of morning and evening.

  15. ولأيّامِ دهره بك روحٌ

    مثلُ روح الغدوِّ والآصالِ

    In them is no weariness that mars faces, rather they are all

    Of shade, not made tedious for the ignorant.

  16. ليسَ فيهن وقدةٌ تلفح الأو

    جُهَ بل كلهن من أظلالِ

    Talking to you, he turns away from the path

    Of malice and disparagement,

  17. لم يعبهنَّ عند ذي الجهلِ إلّا

    أنَّ ساعاتِهنَّ غيرُ طوالِ

    And speaks profusely and pleasantly

    Of various delightful tales,

  18. إن أراد الحديثَ منك تنكَّب

    تَ سبيلَ الإخباثِ والإقلالِ

    In the style of kings, containing jest,

    Containing the rest of proverbs.

  19. وتحدّثتَ مُكثِراً ومُطِيباً

    بأحاديثَ جمّةِ الأشكالِ

    They attract vitality from afar

    And drive away the boredom of tedium.

  20. من طرازِ الملوكِ فيها الفكاها

    تُ وفيها سوائر الأمثالِ

    Like the breeze of meadows in the night's gloaming,

    When the north wind drives it along.

  21. يجتلبنَ النشاطَ من أبعدِ البُع

    دِ ويدفعنَ في نحورِ الملالِ

    Then he comes to converse with you, so you make him

    Equally lighthearted and blithe.

  22. كنسيمِ الرياضِ في غلسِ اللي

    لِ إذا ساقه نسيمُ الشمالِ

    With speech befitting for an occasion,

    And an occasion befitting for speech.

  23. ثم تأتيهِ بالحديثِ فتأتي

    برحاه على سواءِ الثّفالِ

    From the most melodious tongue, smoother than

    A polished blade, indicating pure nature.

  24. ذا مقالٍ موافقٍ لمقامٍ

    ومقامٍ موافقٍ لمقالِ

    Bearing a tune that hearing is like

    The coo of doves over the slopes.

  25. عن لسانٍ أرقَّ حدّاً من السي

    فِ دليلٍ على طباع زُلالِ

    It is accompanied by a gesture that clothes it

    In all light and all shimmer of family.

  26. حاملٍ نغمةً يشبِّهُها السم

    عُ هديلَ الحمام فوق الهَدالِ

    With an elegance as though it were

    Full moons and rising of the dunes.

  27. رافدتْها إشارةٌ ألبستْها

    كلَّ نُور وكل رقراقِ آلِ

    For that conversation is beautiful diversion

    And it has over them the superiority of majesty.

  28. ببنانٍ كأنهنّ مدارٍ

    وأساريعُ في دِماث الرمالِ

    It is something whose hearing delights

    The ear of the guided and the misguided.

  29. فلذاك الحديثِ حسنُ الملاهي

    وله دونهنّ فضلُ الجلالِ

    Like hearing that excites the awe

    Of warriors, their perturbation and inquiry.

  30. فهْو شيءٌ تَلذُّهُ أُذُنُ السّا

    مِعِ من ذي هدىً ومن ذي ضلالِ

    And makes them eager in war

    To brave hordes of awe-inspiring trials.

  31. كالسّماعِ الذي يحرِّك للهُيْ

    يَاب إطرابَهُم وللبخَّالِ

    That enticed the Commander with you, so you became

    At his right hand, not the left.

  32. فيهشّون عند ذلك للجو

    دِ على القانعينِ والسُّؤَّالِ

    And in you he has two tools for war

    And scheming, like the resolve of a resolute assailant.

  33. ويُراحون للقتالِ لدى الحر

    بِ ويغشونَ هائلَ الأهوالِ

    The lock of a secret, its key a scheme,

    And keys are brothers of locks.

  34. ذاك أغرى بك الأميرَ فأصبح

    تَ بيمنَى يديهِ دونَ الشمالِ

    You have a penetrating look that if matters get serious,

    It is more piercing than the surah of heroes.

  35. وله فيك آلتانِ لحربٍ

    ولكيدٍ كهمةِ المؤتالِ

    It provokes stratagems from those

    Deafened, what barricade is there in the armory?

  36. قُفلُ سرٍّ أخوه مفتاحُ رأيٍ

    والمفاتيحُ إخوةُ الأقفالِ

    The Commander saw in you, by my life,

    The opportunity and he is the accomplisher of deeds.

  37. لك إطراقةٌ إذا ناب خطبٌ

    هي أدهى من سورة الأبطالِ

    And with the eye of a falcon, father of falcons,

    At a lofty watch, he became prominent,

  38. يستثيرُ المكايدَ الصُّمعَ منها

    أيُّ صِلٍّ هناك في العِرْزالِ

    And saw in you what he saw in his beloved ones,

    So he chose you for his fortune, not altering.

  39. أبصرَ الفرصةَ الأميرُ لعمري

    فيك وهْو المسدَّدُ الأفعالِ

    Thus he found in you the excellent counsel of a commander

    And minister, both being the best governor.

  40. وتجلّى بعين صقرٍ أبو الصق

    رِ على رأس مَرْقبٍ متعالي

    So when you are mentioned in absence they say

    “He is truly the unique of the unique.”

  41. فرأى فيك ما رأى مجتبيهِ

    فاجتبى منك حظَّه غيرَ آلِ

    O hope of wishers, Abu Ishaq, when

    Every hope is cut off.

  42. فالتقى فيك حسنُ رأي أميرٍ

    ووزيرٍ كلاهُما خيرُ والي

    You are the one I knew long ago

    To not be exceeded in glories by glories.

  43. فإذا ما ذُكرتَ بالغيبِ قالا

    ذاك حقّاً يتيمةُ اللئَّالِ

    If the wind competed with you in generous deeds

    It would deem itself rational by the standard of reason.

  44. يا ثمالَ المؤمِّلينَ أبا إس

    حاقَ عندَ انقطاع كلِّ ثمالِ

    How many a night has a need kept you awake

    Tossing gently, though spending it in comfort?

  45. أنتَ ذاك الذي عهدتك قِدْماً

    لا يغاليك في المعالي مُعالي

    He slept from fatigue and what he intended, while you did not sleep,

    Rather you spent the night wakeful.

  46. لو تُجاريك في مكارمك الري

    حُ لخِيلت معقولةً بعقالِ

    So let some of what you planted among

    The bounty of your gratitude be my gratitude, O brother of bounty.

  47. ربّ ذي حاجةٍ أرقْتَ لها لَي

    لاً طويلاً وباتَ ناعمَ بالِ

    Every thanker to you will see customarily

    That I preceded him while he followed.

  48. نامَ عمّا عناهُ منها وما نم

    تَ ولو نمتَ باتَ في بلبالِ

    I did not task you to be an intercessor

  49. فلأكن بعضَ منْ غرستَه بين

    فضلِ شُكريكَ يا أخا الإفضالِ

    For me, except to one who is bountiful.

    Bright-faced like the crescent, nay brighter

  50. سيرَى كلُّ شاكرٍ لك عُرفاً

    أنني سابقٌ له وهْو تالِ

    Than full moon, nay like the epitome of ideal.

    None matches his beauty except

  51. لم أكلفكَ أن تكونَ شفيعاً

    ليَ إلّا إلى امرئٍ مفضالِ

    What his palm contributes of deeds.

    An Areehi who gives generously at chance,

  52. أبلجِ الوجهِ كالهلالِ بلِ البد

    رِ بل الشمس بل فقيدِ المثالِ

    Multiplying its like and he is the governor.

    A benefactor, beautiful, not an innovator -

  53. لا يضاهيه في المحاسن إلا

    ما تسدّيه كفّهُ من فعالِ

    That is not the case for his like, nor is it possible.

    Indeed beauty and charm are the essence

  54. أريحيٌّ يعطي العطية في العط

    لة أضعافَ أختها وهْو والِ

    Of charity and beauty.

    God beautified his creation, so he appeared

  55. محسنٌ مجملٌ وليس ببِدعٍ

    ذاك مِنْ مثلهِ ولا بمحالِ

    Renewed in his beauty and conformity.

    Soliciting his action from a book

  56. ذانِكَ الحسنُ والجمالُ حقيقا

    نِ بكُنه الإحسان والإجمالِ

    Inscribed on his face without solicitation.

    He is not one who ignores an intercessor

  57. أحسنَ اللَّه خلقه فبداه

    في انتساخٍ لحسنِه وامتثالِ

    If he persists, behaving distastefully.

    Among men who have assumed high morals

  58. يستملّانِ فعله من كتابٍ

    خُطَّ في وجههِ بلا استملالِ

    By efforts, like the assuming of positions by camels.

    Rather, seekers of elevation have risen to the heights

  59. ليسَ ممّنْ إذا ألحّ شفيعٌ

    أخلقَ الوجه عنده بابتذالِ

    And those elevated lowered themselves from glories.

    Vying to reach him, diverse delegations

  60. مِن رجالٍ توقَّلوا في المعالي

    بالمساعي توقُّلَ الأوعالِ

    A delegation of gratitude urging and one of request pleading.

    Rather, his gifts continue vying

  61. بل ترقَّى إلى العلا طالبوها

    وتدلَّى على العلا من معالي

    And visitors to the hopeful.

    Conveying

  62. يتبارى إليهِ وفدانِ شتّى

    وفدُ شكرٍ يحثُّ وفدَ سؤالِ

    To the fallen short of them, attaining, beyond every attainment.

    Seekers sleep while they

  63. بل عطاياه لا تزال تبارى

    وافداتٍ إلى ذوي الآمالِ

    Come to them, arousing craving and fondling.

    They journeyed to whom they were too burdensome,

  64. بالغاتٍ إلى المقصّر عنها

    نائلاتٍ بعيدَ كلّ منالِ

    And spared him the burden of traveling.

    Unceasingly a blessing, if removed from him,

  65. يرقدُ الطالبون وهْي إليهم

    أرِقاتُ الوجيفِ والإرقالِ

    Would not find from him a direction to fade.

    So make my brother Abu Sukr succeed

  66. رحلتْ نحو مَنْ تثاقلَ عنها

    وكفتْهُ مؤونةَ الترحالِ

    Honorably, with trailing robes.

    For he finds your company sweet, seeing you

  67. لا تزُل عنه نعمةٌ لو أُزيلت

    لم تجدْ عنه وِجهةً للزوالِ

    Like cool water, clear and pure.

    Responding to a need of yours that has

  68. فالْقَ في حاجتي أخاك أبا الصق

    رِ مُجدّاً مشمِّرَ الأذيالِ

    Exhausted his vigor to a torrential stream.

    And whenever he meets you, you are rain

  69. فهْو مستعذِبٌ لقاءك إيَّا

    هُ يراه كالبارد السلسالِ

    Ordered by the south winds to pour.

    He is not someone whose wind you made far

  70. متصدٍّ لحاجةٍ لك قد أش

    فَى جداه على شفاً مُنهالِ

    From a sky that wears him out with rain.

    And a man who seeks refuge in your support, is worthy

  71. ومتى ما لقيتَه كان غيثاً

    أمرَتْه الجنوبُ بالتهطالِ

    Of amicable and honest negotiation.

    You have an interceding face, whoever saw it,

  72. ليسَ منْ كنتَ ريحَه ببعيدٍ

    من سماءٍ تبلُّه ببلالِ

    There the entirety of affliction vanished from him.

    Sending down drops from the clouds of favor, in situations,

  73. وامرؤٌ يستقي بجاهك أهلٌ

    بسجالٍ رويَّةٍ وسجالِ

    Upon every barren waterless terrain.

  74. لك وجهٌ مشفَّعٌ مَنْ رآه

    زاحَ عنه هناك كلُّ اعتلالِ

    Ceaselessly gracious for interceding, not rejecting

    Ill-manneredness, rather adding only burnishing.

  75. يُنزل القطرَ من ذُرى المُزن في المح

    لِ على كلِّ جَرْدةٍ ممحالِ

    And so the noble one, asked the needs

  76. ليس ينفكُّ للشفاعةِ مبذو

    لاً وما إنْ يزاد غيرَ صقالِ

    Of others, is unlike the asker.

    I protected a soul you humiliated in custom,

  77. وكذاك الكريمُ سئَّالُ حاجا

    تِ سواه وليس بالسئّالِ

    Do not forget the right of a loyal one.

    How many inaccessible fortresses have you interceded

  78. صنتُ نفساً أذلتَ في العُرف منها

    لا عدِمناك من مصونٍ مُذالِ

    For a friend you saw in affliction?

    He was generous when your hand shook his

  79. كم منيعِ الجدا شفعتَ إليه

    لخليلٍ رأيتَه ذا اختلالِ

    And saw your great noble face.

    So you released the stingy from the shackles of stinginess

  80. جاد إذ صافحتْ يداك يديه

    ورأى وجهك العظيمَ الجلالِ

    And released the friend from his plight.

    For you have released both my captives

  81. ففككت البخيلَ من غُلّ بُخلٍ

    وفككتَ الخليل من سوءِ حالِ

    And formerly released every shackle.

    And you gifted the despicable a praiseworthy gift

  82. فإذا أنت قد فككت أسيرَي

    نِ وقِدماً فككت من أغلالِ

    And gifted the destitute a gift of wealth.

    So you bestowed upon me both wishes

  83. ومنحْتَ الذميمَ منحةَ حمدٍ

    ومنحت العديمَ منحةَ مالِ

    And formerly bestowed every attainment.

    The praiser says of you, at the start and repeat,

  84. فإذا أنت قد أنَلْتَ نوالَي

    نِ وقِدماً أنلت كُلَّ نوالِ

    Neither loathed nor pretending.

    But when he says it, meanings and

  85. قائلُ المدحِ فيك بدءاً وعوداً

    غيرُ مستكرهٍ ولا محتالِ

    Rhymes come to him pouring in streams.

    So persist - your magnificent feats that remain

  86. بل إذا قالهُ أتَتْه المعاني

    والقوافي تنثال أيَّ انثيالِ

    Are immortalized, like mountains enduring.

    I am one who follows loyalty and allegiance,

  87. فابقَ ما بُقّيتْ مآثرُك الغُرْ

    رُ فقد خُلّدتْ خلودَ الجبالِ

    So do not forget the right of a loyal one.

  88. أنا من أتبع الولاءَ الموالا

    ةَ فلا تنسَ حقَّ مولىً مُوالي
