1. مذ صِرتِ همِّي في النوم واليقَظَهْ

    أتعبتُ مما أهذي بك الحفَظَهْ

    Since you became my only concern, waking or asleep

    I have wearied myself with fantasies of you

  2. وعظْتُ نفسي فخالفتْ عِظتي

    وخالفَ القلبُ فيك من وَعظه

    And admonished myself but my soul disobeyed my admonishment

    And my heart disobeyed any advice regarding you

  3. وكيف بالصبرِ عنكِ يا حسنا

    يأمر بالسيئات من لحَظَه

    How can I be patient without you, O beauty

    When a mere glance commands evil

  4. يا من حلا في الفؤاد منظره ال

    حلوُ فما مجَّهُ ولا لفظه

    O you whose face delights the heart

    Sweet beyond description neither gathered nor expressed

  5. عذَّبني منكِ يا معذبتي

    ونُزْهتي في المنام واليقظه

    You have tortured me, O my tormentor

    While awake or asleep I dream of you

  6. وجهٌ إلى كم تصيد رِقَّتُهُ

    قلبي وقلبٌ كم أشتكي غِلظه

    A face that ensnares hearts with its softness

    And a heart - how much I complain of its harshness

  7. ما يوفيك حقَّك التقريظُ

    كُفءُ تقريظك العليمُ الحفيظُ

    No praise can fully credit you

    The Knowledgeable Protector alone is your equal

  8. فيك أشياءُ من يواليك مسرو

    رٌ بها والعدوُّ منها مغيظُ

    In you are qualities, whether friend or foe

    One is delighted, the other indignant

  9. لك فيها تيقظٌ غير محتا

    جٍ إلى أن يُعينه تيقيظُ

    You are vigilantly awake, needing no rousing

    Until the rouser comes to awaken you

  10. كم تحفظتَ من وصية مجدٍ

    لم ينفِّلكَ حفظَها تحفيظ

    How many wise teachings you have preserved

    No keeper could keep as well as you

  11. أنت غيثٌ يقيظُ فينا حياهُ

    إذ حيا الغيثِ لا يكاد يقيظ

    You are a downpour that awakens life in us

    For the downpour's life could hardly awaken

  12. إن يكن ما فعلتَ بِرّاً لطيفاً

    إن ميثاق شكره لغليظ

    If your kindness was a gentle virtue

    Then the covenant of gratitude for it is harsh

  13. منك قِدحي ومنك نصليَ والفُوْ

    قُ ومنك الترييش والترعيظ

    From you come my wine cup and spear

    And my feathers and provision for war

  14. أي شيء أقول يا من عداه

    في نداه التنكيد والتنكيظ

    What can I say, O you who beyond praise

    Is emphasis and re-emphasis in praise

  15. أنتَ قبل التقريظِ من كمَّل اللَ

    هُ فماذا يزيدُك التقريظُ

    You were perfected by God before any praise

    What can praise add to you?

  16. جهد الناس أن يدانوك في المج

    د فما قارب الصميم الوشيظُ

    People struggle to match you in glory

    But the core truth escapes that effort

  17. وجرى الشعر في مداك فلم يل

    حقك ترقيقه ولا التغليظُ

    Poetry flowed in your praise yet fell short

    Neither polished nor exaggerated the reality

  18. أنتَ حلوٌ وأنت مرٌّ وما تُلْ

    فَظ كلّا وكلُّ مُرٍّ لفيظُ

    You are sweet and bitter and cannot be

    Fully grasped - bitterness has an edge

  19. أريحيٌّ مُلحَّظٌ في النوادي

    للأيادي يهزُّك التلحيظ

    Gentle when caressed in gatherings

    Rough when clenched in fists

  20. هِبزريٌّ موعَّظٌ بذوي الذَّمْ

    مِ فقد صان عرضَك التوعيظ

    Forbearing when blamed by the vile

    Your honor protected by wise advice

  21. تحمل الثقل حملَ غير بهيظٍ

    وأَخو شكرِ ما فعلتَ بهيظ

    Bearing burdens without being brash

    Grateful for your gifts without conceit

  22. فالبس العمر سابغاً ومُعادي

    ك حضيض وأنت عالٍ حظيظ

    So wear your age fully and thwart

    Those who wish you low and hold you dear

  23. ذو ندىً غامرٍ يفيض فتضحى

    أنفسُ الحاسدين فيه تفيظُ

    With abundant overflowing bounty

    Leaving even envious souls satisfied

  24. بعطايا موفَّراتٍ هي الإرْ

    واء بعد الإشباع لا التلميظُ

    Remain, O Father of Hussein, brother of benevolence and beauty

    Indignant at indignities, your belly filled

  25. لا تزل يا أبا الحسين أخا الإح

    سان والحسن غائظاً من تغيظ

    With merit, your patron devoid of conceit

  26. لك بطن من الفضول خميصٌ

    ووليٌّ من الفضول كظيظ
