1. يا هلْ من الحادثات من وَزَرِ

    للخائف المستجير أم عَصَرِ

    O you with burdens from events, is there any relief

    For the fearful seeking refuge, or any unraveling?

  2. تغدو فتعدو فما تَرِقُّ على

    أنثى وما إن تخاف من ذكرِ

    They pass by morning then race away, but do not care for

    A female, nor do they fear a male.

  3. يا بؤسَ للدهر ذي السفاهِ أما

    يَفْرقُ بين القيانِ والجِزَرِ

    Alas for the ignorant epoch! Does it not

    Distinguish between the righteous and the wicked?

  4. أما يُعفِّي على جرائم ما اس

    تقدَمَ منه متابَ منتظرِ

    Does it not pardon the crimes of one who

    Repented of his past and awaits forgiveness?

  5. يُمرُّ عصراه كلّ مُنتكث

    ونقضُهُ عائد على المِرَرِ

    It spends its days stumbling

    And breaking its vows habitually.

  6. مُنصلتُ السيفِ كلَّ مُنصلَت

    مُنشمر النَّبل كل منشمَرِ

    The swords of the warriors are all unsheathed

    The archers’ arrows are all poised.

  7. يقتلنا سيفُهُ وتختِلنا

    سهامُهُ الكامنات في القُتَرِ

    Their swords kill us

    Their hidden arrows in their quivers wound us.

  8. كأن إسرافهُ برهبة مق

    هور عليه وحرص مؤتجَرِ

    It is as if his excess fills him with awe

    And eager care burns him up.

  9. كم من قتيلٍ لِصَرفه طَلفٍ

    وكم دمٍ في ثيابهِ هدرِ

    How many were slain by his whims in folly

    How much blood stains his garments messily!

  10. ألا فداءٌ يفي ببُغيته

    ألا سِدادٌ لتلكمُ الفُقَرِ

    If only a ransom would satisfy his tyranny!

    If only something would heal those gaping wounds!

  11. يا لك من مالكٍ ومقتدرٍ

    مؤتَمِر السوء كلَّ مؤتَمَرِ

    O you with a kingdom and power,

    Who gathers evil and gathers power,

  12. مُكتنِفٍ بالعَداء مُعتوِرٍ

    مكتنَفٍ بالملام مُعتوَرِ

    Clothed in enmity, filled with blame,

    Clothed in faults, filled with disgrace,

  13. فجَّعني صرفُهُ بمؤنسةٍ

    تبعث مَيْت النشاط والأشرِ

    His caprice has left me without a joyous companion

    To awaken my lifeless vigor and delight.

  14. صيغت وِفاقَ الهوى فما شُنِئت

    من رَهَل عابها ولا قَفَرِ

    I fashioned consent with passion—but was not faulted

    By anyone who denounced it or was uncouth.

  15. عسيرة البذل غير خاليةٍ

    من خُلق يخدع الرِّضا يَسَرِ

    Harsh to give but not empty

    Of manners that disguise consent as ease.

  16. تُمتِّع الحِدْث من مُلاعَبَةٍ

    تنزل بين المجون والحصرِ

    It gladdens youth with playfulness

    Moving between coyness and familiarity.

  17. ويومها من محرَّم أبداً

    حِذقاً ويوم القيان في صفرِ

    Its days are never in sacred months forbidden

    Whether in early spring or late spring.

  18. سابقة لم تزل تُنقِّلها

    بسابقٍ في الكتاب مستطَرِ

    Surpassing those recorded in scripture

    With precedent in eloquence, not trailing behind.

  19. واها لذاك الغناء من طبقٍ

    على جميع القلوب مقتدَرِ

    And alas for that singing with tones

    Able to captivate all hearts!

  20. يملأ رَوْحاً فؤاد سامعهِ

    ويُصطلى حرُّه من القِررِ

    It fills the soul of its listener,

    Its heat is kindled from embers.

  21. كأنه قالبٌ لكلّ هوىً

    فكلُّهُ والمُنى على قَدَرِ

    It is a mold for every passion

    And all are predestined to their fate.

  22. لا خير في غيره وهل أمَمٌ

    من شاربِ الراح شارب السَّكرِ

    There is no good in other than it, and what hopes

    Can one have who drinks poison instead of nectar?

  23. إنّا إلى الله راجعون لقد

    غال الردى سيرة من السيرِ

    We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.

    Corruption has spread, an evil way of life.

  24. مِلءَ صدور المجالس اختُلِست

    لا بل صدور الورى إلى الثُّغرِ

    The hearts of the gatherings were robbed—

    Nay, the hearts of all mankind up to the horizons.

  25. فَزفْرةٌ لا تزال في صَعدٍ

    وعبرةٌ وُكّلت بمنحدرِ

    So there is a groan in the lungs

    And tears pouring down the cheeks.

  26. بانت وما خلَّفت نظيرتها

    وغصنها اللدن غير مهتصَرِ

    She appeared and left no peer.

    Her delicate branch was not broken.

  27. مضت على دَلِّها بوحدتها

    ولم يعد شخصُها بمنجحِرِ

    She went her way in her solitude

    And her person returned not to assemblies.

  28. تسمو لأقرانها مبارِزةً

    لا من وراء الستور والحُجَرِ

    She challenged her peers head-on

    Not from behind veils and walls.

  29. لم يعتصم عودُها بزامرةٍ

    ولا ضوى وجهها إلى السُّترِ

    She did not adorn herself with musical instruments

    Nor cast her face into veils.

  30. تُبارز العين وحدها أبداً

    والأُذنَ وهي الحميدة الأثرِ

    She confronted eyes directly, forever virtuous and righteous,

    Amazing the ears and eyes.

  31. وتقتل الهمّ شرّ قتلتِهِ

    بغير عون يكون من أُخرِ

    She killed worries—the most evil killing—

    With no aid but her own.

  32. ما بذلتْ للكئيب نُصرتها

    على الأسى فارعوى إلى النُّصَرِ

    She did not lend her support to the depressed

    Against woes, so seek her aid!

  33. لم تخلُ من منظر تُشوِّقهُ

    ومن عفاف يفي بمستَترِ

    She was not without a beautiful and tempting sight

    Or modesty befitting a hidden pearl.

  34. ما برزت للخنا ولا استترت

    من عجر شانَها ولا بجرِ

    She put herself forth, neither indecent

    Nor withdrawn out of shame or arrogance.

  35. ما أُولع الدهر في تصرفهِ

    بكل زينٍ له ومفتخَرِ

    How the days roam madly!

    Snatching away any beauty or pride.

  36. يعدو على نفسه فيسلبها

    إلا عتاد المعدِّ ذي النَّمرِ

    It strips a perfect garment that was its adornment

    Leaving it bare of splendor.

  37. كم ملبس لا يعاب هتّكه

    عن جلدةٍ منه شَثنة الوبرِ

    The fate took away the moon of song from the earth

    So which hearts did it not wound?

  38. أودى بِبستانَ وهي حُلّتهُ

    فقد غدا عارياً من الحبرِ

    Her grave contained in beauty

    A goodly sight and purified essence.

  39. أطار قُمرية الغناء عن ال

    أرض فأيُّ القلوب لم تطِرِ

    Of the dwellers' graves, it became

    The dwelling of the most noble and highest rank.

  40. للَّه ما ضُمِّنت حفيرتُها

    من حُسن مرأىً وطُهرِ مختبرِ

    Those who perfume every plot of land, however foul,

    And befriend it in times of loneliness.

  41. أضحت من الساكني حفائرهم

    سكنَى الغوالي مَداهنَ السُّررِ

    My burning breast, alas for three things dug

    In the soil and buried!

  42. مُطيِّبي كلِّ تربةٍ خَبثتْ

    ومؤنسيها بشرّ مجتوَرِ

    The water of my youth and the boon blended

    With the water of that modesty and reserve.

  43. يا حرّ صدري على ثلاثة أم

    واهٍ هُريقت في الترب والمدَرِ

    If the grave knew who it received

    We would not have dug a grave unprepared.

  44. ماءي شباب ونعمة مُزجا

    بماء ذاك الحياء والخفرِ

    Or her father would have guarded her then

    From his turf a precious pearl.

  45. لو يعلم القبر من أتيح له

    لا نحفر القبر غير محتَفرِ

    The dust that contained her is nobler

    Than tombs of youths in their prime.

  46. أو لأباها فصان حينئذٍ

    عن رمسه درّةً منَ الدرَرِ

    I swear by her coyness in her glances

    And the magic of her charm and shyness,

  47. إنّ ثرىً ضمها لأفضلُ مح

    جوجٍ لِصَبٍّ وخيرُ معتَمرِ

    If cattle were slaughtered around her grave

    Instead of people in the burial place,

  48. أقسمتُ بالغُنجِ من مَلاحظِها

    وسحر ذاك السُّجوِّ والفَتَرِ

    It would be adorned with pearls

    And their shapes would be like perfume.

  49. لو عُقرتْ حول قبرها بقر ال

    إنسِ مكان القِلاص والمُهَرِ

    The wars would commit suicide in its courtyard

    And the hunts of kings would despair.

  50. والدرّ نظمٌ على الترائب من

    هن وأشكاله من العِترِ

    Then I would water its soil with blood

    To quench the burning ember in my heart.

  51. وانتحرت في فنائه بُهَمُ ال

    حرب وصِيد الملوك من مُضرِ

    Take your own life, O soul, in sadness!

    For this is the time of suicide.

  52. ثم سَقيتُ الدماء تربتَها

    لم أشفِ ما في الفؤاد من وَحَرِ

    It is not proper that her entrails melted

    While mine remain unmelted and unripened.

  53. نفسَك يا نفس فانحري أسفاً

    فإن هذا أوان مُنتحرِ

    The days will not deny, after destroying her,

    That it destroys the glorious and mighty.

  54. ما حَسَنٌ أن تذوبَ مهجتُها

    ومهجتي لم تُرَق ولم تُمَرِ

    It bent the sun of day so the stars of night grew dark,

    Each one wrapped in gloom.

  55. لا يُنكر الدهرُ بعد مهلِكها

    هُلكَ ذوات الجلال والخطرِ

    O garden, alas for flowers in you

    And fruits more than blossoms!

  56. كَوَّر شمس النهار فانكدرت

    كواكبُ الليل كل منكَدَرِ

    O garden, my longing for your beauty

    And kindness—both are lost!

  57. بستان يا حسرتا على زَهَرٍ

    فيك من اللهو بل على ثمرِ

    O garden, my heart became confused with madness,

    O delight of hearing and sight!

  58. بستان لهفي لحسن وجهك وال

    إحسان صارا معاً إلى العَفرِ

    O garden, none can compensate me

    For you, neither gardens nor people.

  59. بستان أضحى الفؤاد من وَلهٍ

    يا نزهة السمع منه والبصرِ

    O garden, we watered you with our tears

    Then you sent down a rain of hail.

  60. بستان ما منك لامرئٍ عوضٌ

    من البساتين لا ولا البشرِ

    Nay, befitting water for you is the purest

    Drink of Homs or grape juice.

  61. بستان أسقيتِ من مدامعنا ال

    دمع وأعقبتِ عُقبةَ المطرِ

    Nay, from the nectar of heavens mixed

    With pure musk, smooth and unsullied.

  62. بل حَقُّ سقياك أن تكون من ال

    صهباءِ صهباءِ حمص أو جَدَرِ

    Nay, from the nectar of hearts blended

    With affection and friendship’s sincerity, not bitterness.

  63. بل من رحيق الجنان يقطَبُ بال

    مسكِ سُلافاته بلا عَكَرِ

    O garden, your name was not borrowed, O garden,

    For our own pleasure, nor was it lent.

  64. بل من نجيع القلوب يمزج بال

    عطف وصفو الوداد لا الكدرِ

    When amusement was little, we found you

    A source of joy.

  65. بستان لم يُستعَر لك اسمك يا

    بستانَ لذاتنا ولم يُعَرِ

    I see no amusement after you

    Except derision and mockery.

  66. كنا إذا اللَّهو قلّ مائرُنا

    منه وجدناك معدن المِيرِ

    To someone tone-deaf or sightless, what do

    A song or image matter?

  67. ما كل لهوٍ أراهُ بعدكُمُ

    عندي سوى سُخرةٍ من السُّخَرِ

    You were accompanied by two eyes

    Passionately doting with love-sickness.

  68. لست إلى نغمة بذي أذَنٍ

    ولا إلى صورةٍ بذي صَوَرِ

    You were their right hand so fate cheated you.

    Does it choose other than the best?

  69. كنتِ وكانت قرينةٌ لك عي

    نين لهوىً فِشين بالعوَرِ

    O most beautiful of creations, captivating

    And most perfect of people in maturity!

  70. وكنتِ يُمناهما ففات بك ال

    دَهر وهل يَصطفي سوى الخِيَرِ

    As if molded by the Shaper from light

    In his exemplary nature.

  71. يا مشرباً كان لي بلا كدرٍ

    يا سمراً كان لي بلا سهرِ

    Nay, from the radiance of intellects when they see

    The unseen with the eye of wisdom and moral lesson.

  72. ما كنتُ أدري أطعمُ عافيتي

    أعذبُ أم طعم ذلك السمرِ

    Do not suppose, after you all, I am

    Satisfied with the rising or setting sun or moon!

  73. يا نعمة الله في بريّته

    أصبحتِ إحدى فواقرِ الفِقرِ

    Do not suppose, after you all, I am consoled

    By the cooing of doves in the trees!

  74. يا غضّةَ السن يا صغيرتها

    أمسيتِ إحدى المصائب الكُبرِ

    Do not suppose, after you all, I found rest

    In the morning breeze at dawn!

  75. أنّى اختصرتِ الطريق يا سكَني

    إلى لقاء الأكفان والحفرِ

    Do not suppose, after you all, my eye roamed freely

    In theatres of vision!

  76. ألم تكوني غريرةً فُنُقاً

    لا يهتدي مثلها لمحتَصَرِ

    Its watcher is preoccupied with wakefulness and tears

    So how can it sleep amidst deadly serpents and venom?

  77. أنى تجشمت في الحداثة ما

    جُشِّمتِ من كُره ذلك السفرِ

    I was well-off with you as water and pasture

    But am now destitute and deprived.

  78. أنى ولم تلحقي ذوي حُنْك ال

    سنّ ولا امّزت من ذوي الغَرَرِ

    The delights of that time consoled me

    For what was lacking.

  79. أحميك من مورد قصدتِ له

    لا ينتهي وردُهُ إلى صدرِ

    Its nights were sheer magic

    And its days like innocent maidens.

  80. يا شمسَ زُهر الشموس يا قمر ال

    أقمار حسناً يا زهرة الزُّهَرِ

    We kindled it with the prime of pleasures

    Without violating the limits of propriety.

  81. أبعد ما كنتِ باب مبتهجٍ

    للنفس أصبحتِ باب معتبرِ

    We did not fully enjoy its paradise

    Though we obtained its blossoms.

  82. أصبحت كالترب غير راجحةٍ

    به وقد ترجحين بالبِدرِ

    How we listened to the humming of a drunk

    Garmented one, but did not disrobe one clothed!

  83. أصابنا الدهرُ فيك أكمل ما

    كنت فما رُزؤُنا بمجتبَرِ

    How we drank pure wine from kisses

    Though it was tasted in secret!

  84. لم تقتحمك العيون من صِغَرٍ

    ولا قَلتْك النفوس من كِبرِ

    A mouth with pearls benefits not

    Nor bees with cloud-water in hollows.

  85. فكيف نسلاكِ والأسى أبداً

    في كِبَرٍ والسُّلوُّ في صغرِ

    Its singing complains of its heat

    And its sprig complains of leanness.

  86. كلُّ ذنوب الزمان مغتفرٌ

    وذنبه فيك غير مغتفَرِ

    You were to us a fascinating trial

    Without fame or renown.

  87. تبتّل العود عند فقدكُمُ

    وازدجر اللهو أيّ مزدَجرِ

    Every amusement like your company

    Has defects while others have faults.

  88. وغاب عنا السرور بعدكُمُ

    واحتَضر الهم حينَ محتضرِ

    I took you all willingly as trusted brothers

    And did not leave willingly or by force.

  89. وغاض ماء النعيم يتبعكم

    وانهمر الدمع كلّ منهمرِ

    It is as if she never looked upon me

    One day with the most wondrous eyes.

  90. فإن سمعنا لِمزهر وتراً

    حنّ فهاتيك عَوْلة الوترِ

    In her hand a lute, promising favor

    Giving tidings like a truthful report.

  91. أما ولؤم البِلى وقسوته

    لقد محا منك أحسن الصورِ

    As if when she walked, reminding me of her singing

    With the gait of swaying branches.

  92. يا بشراً صاغه المصوِّر من

    نورٍ على سُنّة من الفِطرِ

    And when she bid farewell, reminding me

    To bid the rituals farewell in life.

  93. بل من شعاع العقول حين ترى ال

    غيب بعين الذكاء والعبرِ

    It is as if I never saw your smiling cheek

    That your Creator clothed in beauty and you disheveled.

  94. لا تحسبوني غَنيتُ بعدكُمُ

    عنكم بشمس الضحى ولا القمرِ

    You would be excusable if you acted proudly

    As pure musk is not blamed for its pungency.

  95. لا تحسبوني أنستُ بعدكمُ

    إلى هديل الحمام في الشجرِ

    It is as if I never enjoyed a comfortable life with you

    Or anything novel.

  96. لا تحسبوني استرحت بعدكُمُ

    إلى نسيم الشَّمال بالسّحرِ

    I was content to see a phantom of Kura

    Walking unveiled, and to hear an echo.

  97. لا تحسبوا العين بعدكم سَرَّحت

    في مسرحٍ من مسارح النظرِ

    A contentment like discontent, and if I could have

    I would have changed and refused the others.

  98. يأبى لها ذاك أن ناظرها

    في شُغُلٍ بالسهاد والعبرِ

    If the celestial spheres revolved according to my will regarding you

    I would have summoned a victorious army.

  99. وكيف بالنوم للمُباشر أط

    راف حُمات الحيّات والإبرِ

    But the spheres that none can contend with

    Have invincible power and glory.

  100. سقياً ورَعياً لعيشةٍ معكم

    أصبحتُ من عهدها بمفتقرِ

    If the world acted according to me, it would be

    Threatened by calamities like no other!

  101. أمتعني دهرُها بغبطتِهِ

    على الذي كان فيه من قصَرِ

    But it is the string of an Almighty King

    Who has power over those seeking glory.

  102. كانت لياليه كلّها سَحَراً

    وكان أيامهن كالبُكَرِ

    Oh how my soul yearns for leaving you behind!

    A yearning that flies off like embers.

  103. لهوٌ أطفنا بِبكر لذَّتِه

    وما فضضْنا خواتمَ العُذَرِ

    It is no sin that called for anger

    Rather, it is our fortune that called for separation.

  104. ولم ننلْ من جناه نَهْمَتَنا

    وإن حظينا بمونِق الزهرِ

    Whether I say it was loss when I willed

    Or gain in profitable trade

  105. كم قد نعمنا بضمِّ مُتَّشحٍ

    وما اعتدينا بهَتْك مؤتزرِ

    Her union after separation profits me

    With sweetness of intense intimacy.

  106. كم قد شربت الرضاب في قُبَل

    كانت ولكن شربت بالغُمرِ

    Had I not been consoled a while by that

    My heart would have shattered completely.

  107. جدوى فمٍ فيه لؤلؤ وجَنَى

    نحلٍ بماء السحابِ في النُّقرِ

    Fate did not violate the sanctity of the playful

    Before you, in desert or settlement.

  108. غناؤه يشتكي حرارته

    وريقه يشتكي من الخَصَرِ

    I cry for you with tears, blood, nay wakefulness,

    Nay with grey hair.

  109. كنتم لنا فتنةً من الفتن ال

    غُرِّ بلا شهرةٍ من الشُّهَرِ

    Nay with gaunt bones, scorning

    That though it is not scorned.

  110. وكلُّ لهوٍ بمثل وصلكُمُ

    ذو غُرر إذ سواه ذو عُرَرِ

    Nay avoiding healing! Nay intending

    What is feared of harm!

  111. أخذتُكُم طائعاً أخا جَذَلٍ

    ولم أدع طائعاً ولم أذَرِ

    I will seek to atone for all that

    By crying over you like the scattering of pearls.

  112. كأنني ما طلعتِ مقبلةً

    عليَّ يوماً بأملح الطُّرَرِ

    Nay if only I knew, having lived and put first

    The self's apology, how and why and when

  113. في كفّك العود وهو يؤذن بال

    إحسان إيذانَ صادقِ الخبرِ

    I endured while you built—was my heart made of stone?

    Save that I be dead, so I vanished.

  114. إذ مشيكم مُذْكِري غناءَكُمُ

    مَشْيَ الهوينا سواكنِ البقرِ

    Yet how many deaths lie in remembrance

    Without any dangerous thought to change it!

  115. وإذ فسادي بكم يذكِّرني

    لنُفْسِدَنَّ الطواف في عمرِ

    I have elegized from you a youth enveloped

    In honor, a secret, and radiant beauty.

  116. كأنّ عينيَّ أبصرتْكِ ضُحى

    في مجلسي والوشاة في سَقرِ

    No elegy suffices for the three

    Save the King's prayer in the chapter.

  117. كأنها ما رأتك كالمَلَكِ ال

    أصيد في التاج يوم مُبتَهرِ

    Though tears flow boundless

    And poetry is reckless and uninhibited,

  118. وبين عينين منكُمُ علمٍ

    لم يُسْدَ شِبْهٌ له ولم يُنَرِ

    I was gentle with the youth, so I bade him farewell

    With gentleness of grief, not wringing.

  119. يا أحسنَ العالمين حاسرةً

    وأكمل الناس عند معتجَرِ

    Tears and poetry assisted willingly

    Not coerced like one forced.

  120. كأنها ما رأتك صادحةً

    والصُّدّحُ الوُرْق عُكّفُ الزُمُرِ

    I complain to God, not anyone

    That one so fair died while the soul lives.

  121. يَسْمعنَ أو يَسْتفدنَ منك شجا

    والتمر يُمتار من قرى هجرِ

    Who can help me have patience now

    When my patience is exhausted?

  122. كأن داوود كان يومئذٍ

    يتلو زبوراً مُلَيِّنَ الزبرِ

    Nay, patience would betray

    The sincere friend—what betrayal!

  123. كأنني ما اقترحتُ ما اقترحتْ

    نفسي فساعفتني بلا زورِ

    I do not ask Allah for beautiful patience

    For without you, it is hideous.

  124. كأنني ما استعدت مقتَرحي

    يوماً فكررتهِ بلا ضجرِ

    My soul's sadness for you is generosity

    While for others it is mean.

  125. وصنتِ خدّاً كساه خالقه ال

    حسنَ فصعّرْتهِ عن الصَعَرِ

    It consoles the heart that you are in

    The gardens of Eden tomorrow and by the rivers.

  126. ولو تكبرتِ كنتِ مُعْذِرةً

    والمسكُ ما لا يُعابُ بالذَّفرِ

    The maidens will intercede for you

    For you are one of them in charm and maidenhood.

  127. كأنني ما نعمتُ منك بمر

    تاحِ نعيمٍ ولا بمبتكرِ

    Oh how my soul longs for you! How often

    You were warned but feared no warning!

  128. رضيتُ من منظر بطيف كرىً

    يعرو ومن مسمع بمدّكرِ

    How many terrifying dreams made me panic for you

    Due to omens from the speech of birds!

  129. رضىً كسخطٍ ولو قَدِرْتُ لغي

    يَرْتُ ونكّرتُ مُنكَر الغيرِ

    You showed me wisdom in bearing adversity

    Against every fear on the horizon.

  130. لو أنَّ قِرني سوى المقادير في

    أمرك أحضرتُ عز منتصِرِ

    Since the morning of its morning I have been

    Radiant while people are dazzled.

  131. لكنها القِرْنُ لا يقاومهُ

    قِرنٌ عزيز لعزة النَّفرِ

    Had I not been distracted from my agony by you

    I would have returned to amusement and frivolity.

  132. لو كان فعل الورى لقد ذَئِرَتْ

    له المساعير أيما ذأرِ

  133. لكنه وِتْرُ مالكٍ مَلِكٍ

    يعلو على الطالبين بالثُّؤَرِ

  134. يا لهفَ نفسي على مُهَاجرتَي

    إياكِ لهفاً يطير كالشرَرِ

  135. ليس لذنبٍ دعا إلى غضبٍ

    لكن لنُعمى دعتْ إلى بطرِ

  136. هجرٌ متى شئتُ قلتُ كان من ال

    خسران أو قلتُ ربح متَّجَرِ

  137. كانت تُجِدُّ الهوى مغنِّيةً

    كأنها نَشرةٌ من النُّشرِ

  138. ووصلُك الإلفَ بعد هجرتِهِ

    يَجْنيك معسول حدّة الظَّفرِ

  139. لولا التعزّي بذاك آونةً

    لانْفَطر القلبُ كلَّ منفَطرِ

  140. ما انتهك الدهر قبلكم لذوي ال

    لَهوِ حريماً في البدو والحضرِ

  141. أبكيك بالدمع والدماء بل ال

    تسهاد بل بالمشيبِ في الشعرِ

  142. بل بنحول العظام مُحتقِراً

    ذاك وإن كان غير محتقرِ

  143. بل باجتناب الشفاء بل بتوخ

    خي النفس ما يُتَّقى من الضّررِ

  144. لأستميحنّ كلّ ذاك لمب

    كائيك بعد استماحة الدِّررِ

  145. بل ليت شعري وقد حَييت وقد

    قَدَّمتِ للنفس وجه معتذِرِ

  146. كيف وأنّى ولِمْ أقمتُ وقد

    بِنْتِ أكان الفؤاد من حجرِ

  147. إلّا أكن متُّ فانقرضتُ فكَمْ

    من مَوْتةٍ للفؤادِ في الذِّكَرِ

  148. وليس في خطرةٍ مغيرةٍ

    لكنها سَرْمد مع الفِكرِ

  149. رثيتُ منك صِبىً تكنَّفه

    عفاف سرٍّ وحسن مجتهَرِ

  150. وما يفي بالثلاث مرثيةٌ

    إلا صلاةَ المليك في السورِ

  151. وإن جرى الدمع غير معتنَفٍ

    وسمَّح الشِّعر غير معتَسرِ

  152. وكنتُ عَفوَ الصبَى فشيعهُ

    عفوٌ من الشجو غيرُ معتَصرِ

  153. دمعٌ وشعرٌ مساعدٌ أتيا

    طوعاً وما طائع كمقتَسرِ

  154. أشكو إلى الله لا إلى أحدٍ

    أن متِّ والنفسُ حيةُ الوطرِ

  155. من لي بالصبر بعد مدَّخرٍ

    أفْنَى من الصبر كلَ مدّخرِ

  156. بل قَبُح الصبر إنه غُدَرٌ

    بصاحب الصدق أيما غُدرِ

  157. لا أسأل الله حسن مصطبر

    فإنه عنك لؤمُ مصطبرِ

  158. وحزن نفسي عليك من كرمٍ

    وهو على من سواك من خَورِ

  159. وقد يُعزِّي الفؤاد أنك في

    جنّة عدن غداً وفي نَهَرِ

  160. سيشفع الحور فيك أنك من

    هنَّ بذاك الدلال والحورِ

  161. يا لهف نفسي عليك كم حَذِرتْ

    لو وُقِّيتْ ما تخاف بالحذرِ

  162. كم وحْيِ رؤيا فزعتُ فيك له

    وطِيرةٍ من نواطق الطيرِ

  163. بيَّنْتِ لي الحزم في البدار إلى

    كل مخُوفٍ عليه مبتدَرِ

  164. أصبحتُ من صبحه بمنبلَجٍ

    والناس من فجره بمنفجَرِ

  165. ولو تخليتُ من شَجايَ بكم

    بادرتُ باللهو كرَّةَ القَدرِ
