إني رأيتُك حالماً أنشدتني

بيتين قاداني عليك على أمَلْ

Two verses that led me to you in hope

أيعوذُني متعوِّذٌ من دهرِهِ

فأعيذَ مالي بالمعاذر والعِلَلْ

Will an enchanter protect me from his time?

So I seek refuge in excuses and pretexts

إني لأستحيي المكارمَ أن أرى

مالاً يُصان وحُرَّ وجهٍ يبتَذَلْ

I am too shy before generosity to see

Wealth that is protected and free faces that are debased
