رأيتك تعطي المال إعطاءَ واهب

إذا المرءُ أعطى المالَ إعطاء مشتري

I saw you give money generously

When a man gives money generously like a buyer

ولستَ بمُبتاع المحامد باللُهى

فتُلفَى جواداً جودُه جود مَتْجَرِ

Yet you do not buy praise from the lowly

So you find a steed generous in its generosity, an unforced generosity

ولست بمجبول على ذلك الندى

فتلفَى جواداً جوده جود مُجبرِ

Nor are you compelled to such bounty

So you find a steed generous in its generosity, a compelled generosity

ولكن رأيتَ العرفَ عرفاً لعينه

فجدت ببذل العرف جود مخَيَّرِ

But you saw good manners as they are

So you found in giving manners a chosen generosity

وفي الناس من يعطي عطاءَ مُتاجرٍ

وآخرُ يعطي كالسحاب المسخّر

And among people there is one who gives trade-mindedly

And another who gives like pouring rain

وأنت وَسطْتَ الحالتين ولم تزَل

لك الواسطاتُ الزهْر من كل جوهر

While you balanced the two states and never stopped

The Middle ways are for you the flower of every jewel

فدونك مدحاً أخطأ الناس بابهُ

زماناً طويلاً معْشر بعد معشرِ

So for you is praise the people missed the door to

For a long time, generation after generation

ومهما يصنْه الناس عن غير أهله

فغير مصون عنك يا ابن المدبرِ

And however much people guard it from the unworthy

It is unguarded from you, O son of the provider
