1. زارت على غفلةٍ من الحَرسِ

    تُهدي إلي السلام في الغَلسِ

    She visited me unexpectedly when the guards were unwatchful,

    Bringing me greetings in the dark night,

  2. كأنما البدر حين قابلها ال

    سعد تجلّى في حالك الغبس

    As if the full moon when it saw her was eclipsed,

    And happiness appeared on your gloomy face.

  3. أنّى تَجَشَّمتِ نحو أرحلنا ال

    هول ولم ترهبي أذى العسس

    How did you dare to come to our abodes,

    Despite the terrors and without fearing the sentries?

  4. قالت ترامى بنا إليك من ال

    شَوق مُغصٌّ بالبارد السلس

    She said, "Ardent longing for you

    Impelled us to you, though the night was cold."

  5. كم زفرةٍ لي تبيت تُنهض أح

    شائي ودمعٍ عليك منبجِس

    How many sighs do I spend the night uttering

    And tears of passion flowing down for you!

  6. وأنت لاهٍ بغيرنا ولنا

    منك هوى ممسِكٌ على النفَس

    While you are heedless of us and we have

    A tender love for you gripping the soul.

  7. عجبْتُ من ذِلتي ومن قلبك ال

    قاسي علينا وخُلْقِكَ الشَّكِس

    I wondered at my humiliation and your

    Heart, harsh to us, and your coarse nature.

  8. لا تأمننَّ الهوى وسطوتَه

    واخْشى رَداه ومنه فاحْترس

    Do not feel secure from love and its power,

    And beware of its treachery, so be on your guard.

  9. واجز مُحبِّيك بالوصال ولا

    تَطْغَ وفيهم للأجرِ فالتمس

    And reward your lovers with union, but do not

    Be overbearing, and for kindness, seek.

  10. فقلت إني عليك مُنعطفٌ

    وعنكِ ما عشتُ غيرُ محتبس

    So I said, "I am devoted to you

    And will never cease to be yours while I live.

  11. لا تنكريني فإنني رجلٌ

    شَيَّد مجدي ربيعةُ الفرَس

    Do not disown me, for I am a man

    Who built his glory - Rabi'ah of the horsemen."

  12. أخرسُ عن غِيبة الصديق وعن

    طِيب نَثاه فلستُ بالخَرس

    I am silent about the absence of a friend and the

    Scent of his remnants, for I am no mute man.

  13. مُقتبس للثناء والحمد بال

    بذل وللذم غيرُ مقتبس

    I borrow praise and thanks through

    Generosity, and do not borrow blame.

  14. يأمن غدْري أخو الصفا ولا

    أعرف إلا الوفاءَ من أُنُس

    The brother of sincerity feels safe from my

    Treachery, and I know only loyalty from intimacy.

  15. فلم نزل من نعيم ليلتنا

    باللهو في مثل ليلة العُرس

    So we did not cease to enjoy the delights of our night

    Frolicking as on a wedding night.

  16. ثم تغنَّتْ صوتاً شربت له

    على اقتراحٍ رِطلين في نفَس

    Then she sang in a voice whose sweetness

    I savored from the suggestion of two measures of spirit.

  17. قد كنتُ في منظرٍ ومستمعٍ

    عن غزو بهراءَ غيرَ ذي فرس

    I had been beholding and listening to her,

    Oblivious to any raid but that of Bahrah the horseless.
