عدوُّكَ من صديقك مستفادٌ

فلا تستكثرنَّ من الصِّحابَ

Your enemy can be beneficial,

So do not befriend too many people.

فإن الداءَ أكثرَ ما تراهُ

يحولُ من الطعام أو الشرابِ

Disease mostly comes from

Food or drink.

إذا انقلبَ الصديقُ غدا عدواً

مُبيناً والأمورُ إلى انقلابِ

When a friend turns into a foe,

Revealing itself while things change.

ولو كان الكثيرُ يَطيبُ كانتْ

مُصاحبةُ الكثير من الصوابِ

If many were good, then

Befriending many would be wise.

ولكن قلَّ ما استكثرتَ إلّا

سقطتَ على ذئابٍ في ثيابِ

But when you befriend too many,

You will fall prey to wolves in disguise.

فدعْ عنك الكثير فكم كثيرٍ

يُعافُ وكم قليلٍ مُستطابِ

Abandon the many, for how many

Are virtuous. How few wholesome!

وما اللُّجَجُ المِلاحُ بمُروياتٍ

وتلقى الرِّيّ في النُّطَفِ العِذابِ

No flood of eloquence with wise sayings

Can avoid torment in mere droplets.
