The lowly find honor in this world

While nobility's glory brings it down

Like pearls that sink to the sea's floor

While corpses float upon its crown

So bear with fate's awful strokes herein

With a heart raised by ancestors' renown

No refuge's found after misfortune

With grief, not urged by passion's heat

A friend's will guides his steed aright

No slowness feared, no haste unmeet

A foe turns away with pitying look

Gloomy and sullen his retreat

So seldom carve injustice on anyone

Lest vengeance come your wrongs to meet
