1. وكم من بخيلٍ قد تأدَّب حيلةً

    ليحجم عنه المادحون فأحجموا

    How many a miser has resorted to cunning

    To discourage eulogists so they desist

  2. إذا فكروا في مدحه ذات بينهم

    فمنهم أخو التغريد والمتلوِّمُ

    When they think to eulogize him at times

    Among them is the warbler's brother, prattler

  3. يقولون من يُهدي إلى البحر حليةً

    ومخرجها منه وفي ذاك مزعمُ

    They say, "Who offers the sea jewelry

    That exits it while on this premise?"

  4. أتى البخلَ من بابٍ لطيفٍ ومسلكٍ

    خفيٍّ عن المقتصِّ لا يُتوهَّمُ

    Stinginess has come subtly and covertly

    Unseen by the demanding, unassumed

  5. فأفحم عنه كل طالب حاجةٍ

    وليس عليه لامرئٍ متكلَّمُ

    Thus silencing every beggar

    With no blamer berating him

  6. إذا زاره من طالبي العرفِ مادحٌ

    هجا شعره بالحق لا يتجرمُ

    If a eulogist seeking bounty visits him

    His poetry berates him justly, no sin

  7. فحاول معسور المديحِ وصعبه

    بمنزورِ جدواه ولا يتذممُ

    So he makes eulogy arduous and strained

    With inadequate rhymes, no disdain

  8. منوعٌ وجيزُ المنع غيرُ مدافعٍ

    يرى أن وشك المنع أمضى وأصرمُ

    Denied yet smooth denial, no defense

    Deeming denial's verge is firmest, most stern

  9. بخيلٌ بجدواه بخيلٌ بأن يُرى

    نسيم المُنى من نحوه يَتَنَسَّمُ

    A miser in his bounty, a miser to be seen

    As the breeze of wishes from him blows gentle
