    وأهلُ وُدِّي جميعٌ غيرُ أشتاتِ

    I used to cry for those of my ancestors who died

    And all my beloved people were together, not scattered

  2. فاليوم إذ فرَّقَتْ بيني وبينَهُمُ

    نوىً بكيْتُ على أهل المودَّاتِ

    But today when it separated me from them

    I cried profusely for the people of affection

  3. وما حياةُ امرئٍ أَضحَتْ مَدَامِعُهُ

    مقسومةً بين أحيَاءٍ وأمواتِ

    And the life of a person whose tears

    Are divided between the living and the dead
