ألا ليس شيبك بالمُتَّزَعْ

فهل أنت عن غيه مرتَدِعْ

Alas! Your gray hair is not disheveled,

So have you desisted from passion?

وهل أنت تارك شكوى الزمان

إذاً لست تشكو إلى مستمعْ

And have you stopped complaining of fate,

Then you do not complain to a listener?

عتبتَ على المقرض المقتضي

وما ظَلمَ المُسلفُ المرتجع

You blamed the lender for asking back,

Though the borrower was not unjust in demanding repayment.

بلى إن من ظلمه لومَهُ

وما ألأم المعطي المنتزِع

Rather the blamer is to blame,

Not the giver who takes back.

وطول البقاء حبيب الفتى

ولكن بأي مَقيتٍ شُفِع

Lengthy survival is dear to the youth,

Yet with what loathing is it accompanied!

نحب البقاء وفيه الغَنا

ء والعيش متَّصلٌ منقطع

We love survival though in it is singing,

And living is continuous though interrupted.

إذا المرء طالت به مدةٌ

علا الشيب مفرقه أو صلع

When a man’s days are prolonged,

Gray hairs separate or make him bald.

فمحبوبه مع مكروهه

إذا ما اجتنى منه أرياً لُسِع

So his love is mixed with hate,

If some of it were avoided, it would sting.

وشيخوخة المرء أمنيَّةٌ

متى ما تناهى إليها هَلِع

Aging is a wish,

Once attained the wisher is confused.

ألا فعزاءك عما مضى

فليس يؤوب إلى من جزِع

Alas! Your solace for the past,

Is that the lamenter gains nothing.

ولا تعذلِ الدهر في غدره

بإخوانه فعليه طُبِع

Do not blame fate for its betrayal,

For it was created to be so.

ألا وازدرع ماجداً مدحة

فإنك حاصد ما تزدرع

Indeed, sow praise generously,

For you will reap what you sow.

ولا تعدونَّ ابن عبد العزي

ز والحكم حكمك إن لم يَرِع

Do not think the son of Abd al-Aziz,

Considers your advice if not frightened.

ولم لا يريع لزرَّاعه

كريمٌ أُثيرَ ومدحٌ زُرِع

Why would he not be frightened of his planter,

A noble crop, praise that is sown?

ألا فَامْرِ أخلاف معروفه

فإنك إن تمرها ترتضع

Indeed! Command your good deeds to continue,

For if you neglect them, they will cease.

يكنَّى بليلى على أنه

ينوب عن الفلق المنصدع

He is called Layla, as if,

He could substitute for the cleft dawn.

وإن كان كالليل في ظله

وفي وسعه كل شيء وسع

And if he is like the night in his shade,

And like it in encompassing all things,

فتى ضاف بغداذَ يقري اللهى

فكل برَيِّقِهِ مرتَبِع

A young man who brought Baghdad abundance,

Every jug of his overflowing,

ولم ير ضيفٌ قرى قبله

مضيفاً ولا كان فيما سُمع

No guest had been hosted before him,

So hospitable, nor had been heard of before.

فتى لا تزال لسؤَّاله

عطايا على سائل تقترع

A young man whose asking,

Is always met by gifts from the beseecher.

تنادت قرائن أمواله

ألا للتفرق ما نجتمع

The sides of his wealth call to each other,

Indeed! We gather only to disperse!

جواد غدا كل ذي خلة

بما ضر ثروته منتفع

He spends generously, and his sword slashes,

Both peerless in their make.

جلا عرضه وجلا سيفه

جميعاً فما فيهما من طبِع

This one safely adorned,

The other ready to strike if alarmed.

فهذا لزينته آمناً

وذاك لبذلته إن فَزِع

To meet rhymes with his armor,

And meet wars without armor.

يلاقي القوافيَ في درعه

ويلقى الحروب ولم يدَّرِع

Armor is only known,

By dew or patience in every tribulation.

وما يعرف الدرع إلا الندى

أو الصبر في كل يوم مَصِع

When asked how he is, excellently,

I say to them, no, by my Lord's side!

إذا قيل عافيه عافٍ أُنِي

ل قلت لهم بل جناب ربع

If he smiles he gathers his smile,

And his clarity refuses if called.

إذا امتيح جَمَّ لممتاحِهِ

ويأبى صفاه إذا ما قُرِع

Near in attainment, far in request,

He comes near in noble stature.

قريب النوال بعيد المنا

ل يقرب في شرفٍ مرتفع

Like a cloud, his person aloof,

Yet from it came no pouring rain.

كمثل السحاب نأى شخصُهُ

ولم ينأ منه صبيبٌ هَمِع

No flaw in him but a beseecher,

Meets his cheek outstretched begging.

ولا عيب فيه سوى نائل

يلاقي السؤال بخدٍّ ضَرِع

Though he sufficed the beseechers,

Who dared and he does not dare.

على أنه قد كفى السائلي

ن فاتَّرَعوا وهو لا يتَّرِع

He excused the excusers, so his gifts,

Have become sought by the seeker.

أعفَّ العُفاةَ فقد أصبحت

عطاياه تنتجع المنتجِع

His beseecher lofty, flashy,

His attainer humble, suppressed.

فسائله شامخٌ باذخٌ

ونائله خاشع منقمع

His generosity took charge of him,

Through it the villain acts devout.

تولت سماحته أمره

وفيها خلال الخليع الورِع

It betrayed him and took his money,

Alas excellent is the treacherous thief!

فخانته واقتطعت ماله

ألا حبذا الخائن المقتطع

But it protected his dignity,

And spared him from any vile talk.

ولكنها وفرت عرضه

وصانته عن كل قيل قَذِع

It did not undertake hoarding wealth,

Rather it undertakes high endeavors.

ولم تضطلع باختزان الثرا

ء لكنها بالعلا تضطلع

He obeyed generosity with his money,

So what praise has he not heard?

أطاع السماحة في ماله

فأي الثناء له لم يطع

So let not people wonder at his words,

Tomorrow praising whom he criticizes today.

فلا يعجب الناس من مقول

غدا في مدائحه ينزرع

It suffices the noble when loved,

And suffices the villain when satiated.

وحسب الكريم إذا ما حبا

وحسب اللئيم إذا ما شبع

He sees money spent like nostrils snipped,

Not as if they were precious cut hands.

يرى المال يعطى كمثل القذا

أميط وليس كأنفٍ جُدِع

When will he be deceived of his money?

For he is not deceived of glory.

متى ينخدع لك عن ماله

فليس عن المجد بالمنخدع

Ostentation kills, sincerity revives,

So he gives and hides his efforts.

يميت الرياء ويحيي الندى

فيعطي ويخفي الذي يصطنع

For musk refuses dispersed diffusion,

Except spreading though it went unheard.

على أنه المسك يأبى نثا

ه إلا انتشاراً وإن لم يَمِع

He spreads giving and his favors,

Appear through diffusion though unspread.

يسر العطايا وآلاؤه

يَرينَ إذاعة ما لم يُذِع

He who does good in secret,

His efforts spread it though he did not spread.

ومن فعل الخير مستخفياً

أشاعت مساعيه ما لم يُشِع

O Abu Layla take it for yourself, charity in you, do not make up.

Well-mannered like her praised one,

أبا ليلة البدر خذها إلي

ك تصدق فيك ولا تخترع

Of honors not removed.

She is the era's crown over her lord,

مهذبة مثل ممدوحها

من الخلع اللائي لا تُختلَع

And earrings in the listener's ears.

The aware say when I recite,

هي الدهر تاج على ربها

وقرطان في أُذُنَيْ مستمع

Can the rock be uprooted by the uprooted?

I attained your bestowal through his door,

يقول الوعاة إذا أنشدت

أألصخرُ يقتلع المقتلع

I am no seducer nor deceiver.

I am not saddened by the loss of what is gone,

أتيت نوالك من بابه

ولستُ الخدوع ولستَ الخَدِع

Though it was like a limb severed from me.

Because I am confident that I,

وما ساءني فوت ما فاتني

وإن كان كالعضو مني نُزِع

When I seek your help, will not be refused.

You have given things I presented before,

لأني على ثقة أنني

متى رمت رفدك لم يمتنع

While you are the imagination that does not clear up.

I extended causes I made cease,

سبقت بأشياء أسديتَها

وأنت المخيلة لا تنقشع

While you are the cause that does not cut off.

So what missed me is as if it did not miss,

ومدت وسائل أُعدمتُها

وأنت الوسيلة لا تنقطع

What was lost to me as if was not lost.

I swear by God I did not neglect,

فما فاتني فكأن لم يفت

وما ضاع لي فكأن لم يضع

My share of you nor did I sell.

But I have an ailment,

وأقسم بالله أن لم أهب

نصيبيَ منك وأن لم أبع

And hope through your blessings it will heal.

If I have a prohibiting reason,

ولكنني في يدَي علة

وأرجو بيمنك أن تتَّزع

My hope in you is not cut off.

Whoever intercedes like you does not stop,

وإن يك لي سبب قاطع

فما أملي فيك بالمنقطع

Whoever barges in like you is not bent.

How many evildoers came first,

ومن يعترض مثلكم لا يقف

ومن يقتحم مثلكم لا يكع

While bestowers of good followed.

Whoever the nights fought complains,

وكم من مسيءٍ أتى سابقاً

ويا رب محسن قوم تَبِع

While whoever they befriended mourns.

The nights' claws are armed,

ومن حاربته الليالي اشتكى

ومن سالمته الليالي فُجع

And whoever came between claws was clawed.

So do not deprive me for my sickness,

ومسبعة الدهر مشحونة

ومن حل بين سباع سُبِع

To enjoy my share being sick and pained.

Poets strove to innovate,

فلا تحرمنِّي على علتي

فأحظى بحظَّيْ لهيفٍ وَجِع

But found nothing but what you invent.

You tried innovating wonders,

جرى الشعراء لكي يبدعوا

فلم يجدوا غير ما تصطنع

Beyond those before you yet could not.

So you became equal,

وحاولتَ إبداعَ أكرومةٍ

على أوَّليكَ فلم تستطع

No innovations you tried were unattainable.

So do not seek innovation after it,

فأصبحتم قد تكافأتمُ

ولا بدع حاولتمُ ممتنع

And be like the rest who follow.

I say, and the Commander pledged you,

فلا تطلبوا بعدها بدعةً

وكونوا كسائر من يتبع

Not by the despised nor the crude.

Neither by the abhorred or the aggressive, no!

أقول وقد أرهنوك الأمي

ر لا بالذميم ولا بالجَدِع

Nor by the coward or the terrified.

Neither by the few or the humiliated, no!

ولا بالهِدان ولا بالددا

ن كلّا ولا بالجبان الهلع

Nor by the stingy or the greedy.

It suffices the Commander, people whose pledge,

ولا بالقليل ولا بالذلي

ل كلّا ولا بالبخيل الجشع

Is every pasture for grazing.

It suffices the Commander, people whose pledge

وفى للأمير أناسٌ غدا

رهينتهم كل مرعىً مَرِع

Is every hilltop and branch.

So how can a people whose pledge,

وفي للأمير أناس غدا

رهينتهم كل طود فرع

Is every collected good, be disgraced?

An eyebrow pledged its bow,

فأنى يخيس أناس غدت

رهينتهم كل خير جمع

And watched for abhorrent talk through it.

While your people lower themselves to their pledge,

وفى حاجبٌ راهناً قوسَه

وراقب فيها الحديث الشنِع

Is not the moon from the bent branch cut?

The family of Abi Dulaf, a people,

وقومك أحنى على رهنهم

وما البدر من عود نبع فُرِع

Who see virtues as religious law.

If you initiate long eulogy to them repeat,

وآل أبى دُلَفٍ معشرٌ

يرون المكارم ديناً شرع

Or end rhyme among them pair.

You see in their settlements, riches of the wealthy,

إذا أُبدِئَ الطول منهم أُعي

دَ أو أُوتِر العرف فيهم شفع

And power of the weak and safety of the alarmed.

Among them are two tastes for tasters,

ترى في ذراهم غنى المجتدي

وعز الذليل وأمنَ الفزع

Sweet delicious and bitter revolting.

They built in the mountains, mountains of heights,

وفيهم مذاقان للذائقي

ن حلوٌ لذيذٌ ومرٌّ بشِع

For those mountains are humbled to them.

They did not refrain from a foe through them,

بنوا في الجبال جبال العلا

فتلك الجبال لها تختشع

But rather the mountains refrain through them.

Their ancestors reached a rank,

وما امتنعوا من عدوٍّ بها

ولكنها بهمُ تمتنع

The ancestors of kings contended for.

They are the innovative in splendor of heights,

سمت بجدودهم رتبةٌ

جدودُ الملوك لها تصطرع

If others are the followers.

Religion is not but with followers,

هم المبدعون بديع العلا

إذا كان غيرهم المتَّبِع

But glory is for the innovative.

Eulogy of others is too narrow,

وما الدين إلا مع التابعي

ن لكنما المجدُ للمبتدع

While their praise has ample space.

They facilitate the tongue of the feeble,

يضيق على مادحي غيرهم

مقالٌ لمدّاحهم يتسع

Glory that makes the maker.

And they restrict the tongue of the prattler,

هم يبسطون لسان العيي

ي مجداً يُصَنِّعُ غير الصَنِع

Generosity that satisfies the unsatisfied.

Their eulogizer pronounces that they,

وهم يقطعون لسان البلي

غ جوداً يقنِّع غير القنِع

Offer them from a flowing jug.

While their eulogizer is silent that they,

يفوِّهُ مدّاحهم أنهم

يمدونهم من إناء ترِع

Give generously from pouring rain.

So how they expanded the tongue of a person,

ويسكت مدّاحهم أنهم

يجودونهم من نجاء همِع

Exceeding in length until woven!

And how they restricted a person's tongue,

فكم بسطوا من لسان امرئ

فأسرف في الطول حتى ذُرِع

Though it was not severed by their restriction!

They were angry for loftiness and bought,

وكم قطعوا من لسان امرئ

وإن كان لم يَدمَ لما قطع

Eulogies sold but not accepted.

They ascended and bought them on their own terms,

هم غضبوا للعلا فاشتروا

مدائح بيعت فلم تستبع

Not buying them while fragmented.

How many fragmented falsely,

سموا فاشتروها بأحسابهم

ولم يشتروها لوهي رقِع

With eulogy though it does not rise high!

Their generosity did not make them high, but they ascended,

وكم راقع حسباً واهياً

بمدح وإن كان لا يرتقع

So they came with every attainment unattainable.

They ascended and quenched all beneath them,

ولم يُعلِهم جودهم بل علوا

فجاءوا بكل نوال منع

So how much anguish by them was cooled!

Like the sky's ceiling relieving servants,

علوا فسقوا كل من تحتهم

فكم من غليل بهم قد نقع

Thankful to its Raiser when lifted.

It is right for the exalted,

كسقف السماء أغاث العبا

د شكراً لرافعه إذ رفع

To be gentle and affectionate to the humble.

As if you, O sons of Qasim,

وحق العلو على المعتلي

حنوٌّ وعطف على المتضع

Are planets from a moon launched.

He is the full moon and made you stars,

كأنكم يا بني قاسم

كواكب من قمرٍ تنقلع

Humbling in an orbit that rises.

Abu Dulaf clothed you his robes,

هو البدر أدّاكم أنجماً

تواضَعُ في فلَكٍ يرتفع

Each imprinted with his tranquility.

You were people with a merit,

كساكم أبو دلف خيمَه

فكلٌّ بسكَّتِهِ منطبع

Hope had despaired of it.

Among people is differentiation in what distinguished you,

وكنتم أناساً لكم شيمة

قد استشعر اليأس منها الطمع

Though united when will they meet?

The hardship of your equal was not trifling,

وفي الناس مما خصصتم به

تفاريق لكن متى تجتمع

Nor was the worry of your neighbor restrained.

You walked the path of friendship and loyalty,

وما بات عانيكم كانعاً

ولا هَمُّ جارِكمُ مكتنِع

Alas from the harm of him you benefited!

So none loathes you taster,

وقدماً وددتم وعوديتمُ

وهيهات من ضُرَّ ممن نُفع

Nor finds you distasteful swallower.

فليس يعافُكُمُ ذائقٌ

وليس يُسيغكمُ مبتلع
