شابَ رأسي ولات حينَ مَشيبِ
وعجيبُ الزمان غَيْرُ عَجِيبِ
My head grew white but the times are still strange
How wondrous is time, yet not so wondrous!
فاجعلي موضعَ التعجُّب من شَيْ
بِيَ عُجباً بفَرْعك الغِرْبيبِ
So make my wonderment at a thing
Be wonderment at your fresh branch.
قد يشيبُ الفتى وليس عجيباً
أن يُرى النورُ في القضيب الرطيبِ
A youth may grow white-haired yet that is no wonder,
For light is seen in the moist rod.
ساءها أنْ رأتْ حبيباً إليها
ضاحكَ الرأسِ عن مفَارقَ شِيبِ
It saddened her to see a beloved of hers
Laughing bare-headed, devoid of white hair.
فدَعَتْهُ إلى الخُضاب وقالت
إنَّ دفنَ المَعيبِ غيرُ معيبِ
So she called him to dye his hair, saying
“Burying a defect is no defect.”
خَضَبت رأسَهُ فبات بتَبْري
حٍ وأضحى فظلَّ في تأنيبِ
He dyed his hair so he spent the night distressed and arose still blamed
One from whom blame will not cease
ليس ينفكُّ من مَلامة زارٍ
قائلٍ بعد نظرتَيْ مُستريبِ
Saying, after my two doubtful glances
“Straying, straying, to him who was admonished by
ضلّةً ضلّةً لمن وعَظَتْهُ
غِيَرُ الدهر وهْو غيرُ مُنيبِ
Another than fate, yet was not dissuaded.”
He knows the folly of gazelles, pursuing
يدَّري غِرَّةَ الظباء مُريغاً
صَيْدَ وحْشيِّها وصَيْدَ الرَّبيبِ
Their wild game and the game of the pasture.
Passionate, roving, it hurls him -
مُولَعاً موزَعاً بها الدهر يرْمي
ها بسهم الخضاب غيرَ مصيبِ
Fate - at them with the arrow of dye but misses.
Powerless, weak in strength, he takes on
عاجزٌ واهنُ القُوى يتعاطى
صبغةَ اللَّه في قناع المشيبِـ
God’s dye in the mask of white hair.
He hopes to please the beauties with it so he calls to them
ـرامَ إعجابَ كل بيضاءَ خود
بسواد الخضاب ذي التعجيبِ
Yet he calls though none call to him.
No wanton answers his passion
فتضاحكْنَ هازئاتٍ وماذا
يُونِقُ البِيضَ من سوادٍ جَليبِ
And he follows like the following of a puppet.
Love bound me until I was as though
يا حليفَ الخضاب لا تخدع النف
س فما أنت للصِّبا بنسيبِ
Between us there was no reckoner.
It robbed me of the blackness of my hair but
ليس يجدي الخضابُ شيئاً من النفـ
ـع سوى أنه حِدادُ كئيبِ
Recompensed me with the down of every beard.
It recompensed me with Ali, glory to him,
فاتَّخذْهُ على الشباب حداداً
وابكِ فيه بعَبْرة ونَحيبِ
A recompense in which is solace for the wary.
Generous among kings, cultivated,
وفتاةٍ رأت خضابي فقالت
عَزَّ دَاءُ المشيب طِبَّ الطبيبِ
He has never ceased to shelter every cultivated man.
To him the indigent person complains of
خاضبُ الشيب في بياض مُبينٍ
حين يبدو وفي سوادٍ مريبِ
A pledged thing to every hardship that responds.
Comforting to him when worries thicken,
يالها من غَريرة ذاتِ عينٍ
غيرِ مغرورة بشيبٍ خَضيبِ
A solace that melts for the complainant.
He goes to meet those driven off from the doors
وحقيقٌ لعورة الشيب أن تبـ
ـدُوَ للغِرِّ غيرِ ذي التدريبِ
With good news from him and a welcome.
If the aspirants refused his call one day
لهفَ نفسي على القناع الذي مَحـ
ـحَ وأُعقِبْتُ منه شرَّ عَقيبِ
He would summon them to him by threat.
Many a scandal for Iblis’ party he foiled
مَنَعَ العينَ أن تَقرَّ وقرَّت
عينُ واشٍ بنا وعينُ رقيبِ
So it ended and there was no confusion in it.
The traps that were for the tyrants’ lions
شانَ ديباجةَ الشبابِ وأزرى
بقوامٍ له ولينِ عسيبِ
Destroyed his family, like kindling.
The kings gave him the rank of guide,
نفَّر الحِلْمَ ثم ثنَّى فأمسى
خَبَّبَ العِرْسَ أيَّما تخبيبِ
Not erring in order.
An ordainer who set matters right
شَعَرٌ ميتٌ لذي وَطَرٍ حيـ
ـيٍ كنارِ الحريق ذات اللهيبِـ
So they returned, rectified by him, to rectitude.
He commissioned tribulations until they turned
في قناعٍ من المشيبِ لَبيسٍ
ـورداءٍ من الشباب قشيبِ
To one who does not reproach the commissioner.
With him there is remedy from comment
وأخو الشيب واللُّبانة في البِيـ
ـض بحالٍ كقَتْلة التغبيبِ
For those afraid and the serious time.
His efforts have well described him until
مَعهُ صبوةُ الفتى وعليه
صَرفة الشيخ فهْو في تعذيبِ
They silenced every poet and preacher.
But they emulated his emulation so they set about
يُطَّبَى للصِّبا فيُدْعى مجيباً
وهو يدعو وما لَه من مجيبِ
Relieving themselves of words, every strange meaning.
We have tested his traits and praised in him
ليس تنقادُ غادةٌ لهواهُ
وهو ينقادُ كانقيادِ الجَنيبِ
An absence, praise of one tasting and finding sweet.
Thus we were restored by him to the life
ظلمتني الخطوبُ حتى كأني
ليس بيني وبينها من حَسيبِ
That is not abased, and the sea that is not rough.
We were not deterred when we set out to him
سلبتْني سوادَ رأسِي ولكن
عوّضتْني رياشَ كلِّ سليبِ
The faces of the bleary-eyed throng yesterday.
The horses stretched out with us to him
عوّضتني أخا المعالي عليّاً
عِوَضٌ فيه سلوة للحَريبِ
From a desert to a spacious desert.
A nature in him, ample, and art
خُرَّهِيٌّ من الملوك أديبٌ
لم يزل ملجأً لكل أديبِ
Not confined in it by any shout of war.
It was pleasant for the caravans when they stretched out to him
يستغيثُ اللهيفُ منه بمدعوْ
وٍ لدى كل كَربةٍ مستجيبِ
At dawn with compensation.
Their descent was not dearer to them
أَرْيَحيٌّ له إذا جَمَدَ الكز
زُ بَنانٌ تذوبُ للمستذيبِ
Than the gentle breeze to him after dreariness.
Trusting that with him they would find pasture,
يتلقَّى المُدفَّعينَ عن الأبـ
ـواب بالبشر منه والترحيبِ
A hitch for every straying camel.
O you who awe me and my poetry!
لو أبى الراغبون يوماً نداهُ
لدعاهُمْ إليه بالترهيبِ
I am not one who answers every awestruck one.
God raised my desire above your gifts, and what
رُبَّ أُكرومةٍ له لم تَخَلْها
قبلَهُ في الطباع والتركيبِ
Is the starling or the little finch to me?
He rewarded me through your glory,
غَرَّبتهُ الخلائقُ الزُّهْرُ في النا
س وما أوحشتْهُ بالتغريبِ
So I obediently responded with the first reward.
Protecting me from misfortunes with the generosity
يَهَبُ النائلَ الجزيلَ مُعيراً
طَرفَهُ الأرضَ ناكتاً بالقضيبِ
Of Hatem and the valor of youth.
For me, in your glory, goals which were
يتَّقي نظرة المُدلِّ بجدوا
هُ ويَعْتَدُّها من التثريبِ
For the son of Imran in his staff of myrtle wood.
And if you pinched provision from me
بعد بشرٍ مُبَشِّرٍ سائليه
بأمان لهم من التخييبِ
I trained the member intensely.
The giver, the causer of my comfort, I have found
حَبّبَتْ كفُّه السؤالَ إلى النا
س جميعاً وكان غير حبيبِ
Constant, not wearied by giving and enabling.
Clouds of glory contended with his glory
ما سعى والسعاةُ للمجد إلا
سبقَ المُحْضِرينَ بالتقريبِ
My right hand forever giving rain.
I said, when he was generous before a truthful
لو جرى والرياحُ شأْواً لأَضحى
جريُها عند جريه كالدَّبيبِ
Aspiration, “O a downpour that makes the hand of the cherisher glisten before its plunge into ruination!”
You anticipated for me from your call before my drawing
من رآه رأى شواهد تُغْني
عن سماعِ الثناء والتجريبِ
From you, my watering place, an overflow for drinking.
That is a sort of strange downpour
فيه من وجهه دليلٌ عليه
مُخبِرٌ عن ضَريبةٍ ذات طيبِ
O son of Yahya! And you are no stranger.
I do not see myself, if I scrape
حَكم اللَّهُ بالعلا لعَليٍّ
وبحق النجيب وابن النجيبِ
The bottom of the bucket, getting a small portion.
No - by my life! And how so, when before the trial
فَلْيَمُتْ حاسدوه همّاً وغمّاً
ما لحُكْم الإله منْ تعقيبِ
You watered me with a scroll of plenty?
But rather I see myself - no doubt - becoming
جِذْلُ سلطانِه المحكَّك في الخَطْـ
ـب وعَذْقُ الجُناة ذو الترجيبِ
At your hand one of ample fold.
By my father you are of glorious, prestigious origin
والنصيحُ الصريحُ نُصحاً إذا ما
جمعوا بين رائبٍ وحليبِ
Whose honor people seek, not fearing it.
You gained glory through munificence, and the house
والذي رأيُهُ لأسلحة الأب
طالِ مثلُ الصِّقال والتذريبِ
By erecting pillars and daubing.
Who takes a name - your names are the names -
عنه تمضي ولو تعدّته أضحت
من كليلٍ مُفَلَّلٍ وخَشيبِ
Takes the place of titles.
Of generous, glorious, noble,
مِدْرَهُ الدين والخلافة ذو النص
ح عن الحَوْزتين والتذبيبِ
Chieftain, master, and chief.
Shame on him who expects to reach you in glory! He who expects you
فَلَّ بالحجة الخُصومَ وبالكي
د زُحوفَ العِدا ذوي التأليبِ
Cannot attain you, with familiar honor.
You attained the farthest goals, with close
رُبَّ مَغنىً لحزب إبليسَ أخلا
هُ فأمسى وما به مِنْ عَريبِ
Honor you reached what is far.
Receive this eulogy with which the singers
دَمَّرتْ أهلَهُ مكائدُ كانت
لأسودِ الطغاةِ كالتقشيبِـ
Delight, though the anchors weighed.
Thought strung its pearls unpierced
ـرتّبتهُ الملوكُ مرتبةَ المِدْ
رَهِ لا مُخطئين في الترتيبِ
Since a pearl is blemished by piercing.
Only rhymes preoccupied it
قَيِّمٌ قوَّمَ الأمورَ فعادتْ
قيِّماتٍ به من التحنيبِ
From praising you, busied with riddles.
And for your aspirant, before it, words
واستناب الخطوب حتى أنابت
ربَّما لا تُنيبُ للمستنيبِ
Refined in you, intensely refined.
It captivates the listeners - the easiest of what is in it -
عندَهُ للثَّأَي طِبابٌ من التد
بير يَعْيا به ذوو التطبيبِ
Even if recited without modulation.
It blackened in you every whiteness,
لَوْذعيٌّ له فؤادٌ ذكيٌّ
ماله في ذكائه من ضَريبِ
Minds see it as gilding.
If its eloquence rivaled Persia one day
يَقظٌ في الهَناتِ ذو حركات
لسكون القلوب ذاتِ الوجيبِ
It would Arabize the Persians, intensely.
It is of what your excellent upbringing added
ألمَعِيٌّ يرى بأولِ ظنٍّ
آخرَ الأمر من وراء المغيبِ
Alas! What excellent upbringing!
How much reward you confirmed on me for it!
لا يُرَوِّي لا يُقَلِّبُ كفّاً
وأكُفُّ الرجالِ في تقليبِ
You were worthier of it than the reward-seeker.
Bestowing two boons: useful education,
يُدرِكُ الطِّلْبَ بالبديهة دون ال
عَقْبِ قبل التصعيد والتصويبِ
Beneficial discipline, and boonish reward.
From you it came to you, called by affection
حازمُ الرأي ليس عن طول تجريـ
ـبٍ لبيبٌ وليس عن تلبيبِ
Without calling for affection.
وأريبٌ فإنْ مُريغو نَداه
خادَعُوه رأيتَ غيرَ أريبِ
يتغابَى لهم وليس لمُوقٍ
بل لِلُبٍّ يفوقُ لبَّ اللبيبِ
ثابتُ الحالِ في الزلازل مُنْها
لٌ لسُؤّالهِ انهيالَ الكثيبِ
ليِّنٌ عِطفُه فإنْ رِيمَ منه
مَكْسرَ العود كان جِدَّ صليبِ
مَفْزعٌ للرُّعاةِ مرعىً خصيبٌ
لرعاياهُمُ وفوق الخصيبِ
في حِجاهُ وفي نداهُ أمانَا
نِ من الخوف والزمانِ الجديبِ
أحسنتْ وصفَهُ مساعيهِ حتى
أفحمتْ كلَّ شاعرٍ وخطيبِ
بل حَذَوا حَذْوَها فراحوا يريحو
ن من القولِ كلَّ معنى غريبِ
قد بلونا خلاله فَحمِدْنا
غَيْبَها حمدَ ذائقٍ مُستطيبِ
فانتجعنا به الحيا غيرَ ذي الإقْ
لاعِ والبحرَ غيرَ ذي التنضيبِ
ما زجرنا وقد صرفنا إليه
أوجُهَ العِيسِ بارحاً ذا نعيبِ
يَمَّمَتْه بنا المطايا فأفْضَتْ
من فضاءٍ إلى فضاءٍ رحيبِ
خُلُقٌ منه واسعٌ وفِناءٌ
لم يَرُعْها به هديرُ كليبِ
طاب لليَعْملاتِ إذ يَمَّمتْهُ
وصْلُهُنَّ البكورَ بالتأويبِ
لم يكن خَفْضُها أحبَّ إليها
من رسيم إليه بعد خبيبِ
ثِقةً أنَّهُنَّ يلقينَ مرعىً
فيه نَيٌّ لكل نِضْوٍ شَزيبِ
أيُّهذا المُهيبُ بي وبشعري
لستُ ممن يُجيب كلَّ مُهيبِ
رفعَ اللّه رغبتي عن عطايا
كَ وما لِلعُقاب والعندليبِ
ثَوَّبَتْ بي إلى عليٍّ معالي
هِ فلبَّيتُ أوّل التثويبِ
مَاجِدٌ حاربَ الحوادثَ دوني
بنَدى حاتمٍ وبأسِ شَبيبِ
ليَ في جاههِ مآربُ كانت
لابنِ عمرانَ في عصاهُ الشعيبِ
وإذا حزَّ لي منَ المال عُضْواً
أرَّب العضوَ أيَّما تأريبِ
أصبح الباذلَ المسبِّبَ لا زا
ل مَليَّاً بالبذلِ والتسبيبِ
ساجلَتْ جاهَهُ سحائبُ عُرفٍ
من يَمينَيْهِ دائماتُ الصَّبيبِ
قلت إذ جاد باللُّهى قبل سَعي
صادقٍ منه غيرِ ذي تكذيبِ
يا رِشاءً تَخْضَلُّ منه يد الما
تحِ قبل انغماسِهِ في القليبِ
بَضَّ لي من نداكَ قبل استقائي
بكَ ريِّي وفَضْلَةٌ للشريبِ
ذاك شيءٌ من الرِّشاءِ غريبٌ
يا ابنَ يحيى ومنك غيرُ غريبِ
ما أُراني إذا خبطتُ بدَلْوي
جُمَّةَ الماءِ بالقليل النصيبِ
لا لَعَمْري وكيف ذاك وقبل الـ
ـمتْحِ روَّيْتَني بسَجْلٍ رغيبِ
بل أُراني هناك لا شك أغدو
ويَدي منكَ ذاتُ بطنٍ عشيبِ
بأبي أنتَ من جليلٍ مَهيبٍ
مَطْلِبُ العُرْفِ منه غيرُ مهيبِ
طنَّبَ المجدَ بالمكارم والبيـ
ـت بنصبِ العماد والتطنيبِ
من يُلَقَّبْ فإن أسماءك الأس
ماءُ يشغلنَ موضعَ التلقيبِ
من جوادٍ وماجدٍ وكريمٍ
وزعيمٍ وسيِّدٍ ونقيبِ
تَبَّ من يرتجي لَحَاقك في المجـ
ـدِ وما مرتجيكَ في تتبيبِ
أعجز الطالبيكَ شأوٌ بعيدٌ
لكَ أدركْتَهُ بعُرفٍ قريبِ
هاكها مِدحةً يُغنِّي بها الرُّكْ
بانُ ما أرزمَتْ روائمُ نيبِ
نَظمَ الفكرُ دُرهَّا غير مثقو
بٍ إذا الدُّر شِينَ بالتشعيبِ
لم يَعِبْها سوى قوافٍ تشاغل
نَ عن المدح فيك بالتشبيبِ
ولراجيكَ قبلها كلماتٌ
هُذِّبتْ فيك أَيَّما تهذيبِ
يُطرِبُ السامعينَ أيسرُ ما في
ها وإن أنشدت بلا تطريبِ
سَوَّدتْ فيك كلَّ بيضاء تسوي
داً تراه العقولُ كالتذهيبِ
لو يُناغِي بَيانُها العُجْمَ يوماً
عرَّبَ العُجمَ أيَّما تعريبِ
وهْي مما أفاد تأديبُك الفا
ضلُ واهاً لذاك من تأديبِ
كم ثواب أَثَبْتَنيه عليها
كنتَ أولى به من المستثيبِ
مُنعِماً نُعْمَيَيْنِ نُعمى مفيدٍ
أدباً نافعاً ونُعمى مثيبِ
منك جاءت إليك يحدو بها الود
دُ على رغبةٍ بلا ترغيبِ
