  1. لغيرك لا لكَ التفسيرُ أنَّى

    يُفسَّرُ لابن بجدتها الغريبُ

    Not for you but for others this interpretation,

    How can the stranger understand his ancestor?

  2. كلامُك ما أُترجِمُ لا كلامي

    وإن أصبحتُ لي فيه نصيبُ

    My words I do not translate, your words I do,

    Even if I get a share in them.

  3. أأعرفُهُ ولستُ له نسيباً

    وتجهلُهُ وأنتَ له نسيبُ

    Do I know him yet am not his relative?

    You are ignorant of him yet you are his kin.

  4. معاذَ اللَّه ليس يَظُنُّ هذا

    من القوم الأديبُ ولا الأريبُ

    God forbid that this should be thought

    By the refined or the uncouth.

  5. بلى ترجمتُ عن شعري لقومٍ

    فصيحُ الشعر عندهُم جليبُ

    Nay, I translated my poetry for a people

    Whose eloquent poetry is fetching.

  6. عساهم أن يُجيلوا الطرف فيه

    فإن سألوا أجابهمُ مجيبُ

    May they overlook any flaws,

    And if asked, a respondent will respond.

  7. وإن ضلوا فمُرشدُهُم قريبٌ

    وإن سألوه ألفوه يجيبُ

    If they stray, a guide is near,

    And if they ask him, they will find him answering.
