سُؤليَ أنْ توقنَ أنّي امرؤٌ

قد امَّحى من صدرهِ الغِلُّ

I was asked to make sure that you know

I am a man who cleared rancor from his chest

كيلا ترى أنيَ مستأهلٌ

يوماً عصيباً ما لَهُ ظِلُّ

So you won’t think I deserve

A terrible day that has no shade

وأنتَ في حِلٍّ وإنْ نالني

منك الذي لا يسعُ الحِلُّ

And you are dear to me, even if

I get from you what cannot be dear

لا يغضبُ العبدُ على ربهِ

ويَغضبُ الصاحبُ والخِلُّ

A servant does not get angry at his Lord

But a friend and loved one gets angry

ولست بالصارفِ عنك الهوى

والرأيَ أنت الدّقُّ والجِلُّ

And I cannot turn you away from love

You are the delicate and precious opinion

والإلُّ والذمةُ قد أُكّدا

فلتُرقبِ الذمةُ والإلُّ

And covenant and oaths were affirmed

So let the oath and covenant be guarded

قد كان برسامٌ وبُحرانه

فلا يكنْ بعدهما سِلُّ

There was an artist and his sea

Let there not be after them any disconnection
