  1. سُئلَ الأيرُ ما تريدُ إلى الكعْ

    ثبِ قال الدخولُ قيل ألا ادْخُلْ

    The chief was asked what he wanted at the camp

    He replied, to enter. It was said, do not enter.

  2. قال أبغي الخروجَ قيل ألا فاخ

    رُجْ فقال الخروج ما ليس يَسْهُلْ

    He said, I want to leave. It was said, do not leave.

    He said, leaving is not easy.

  3. إنّما شأني التردُّدُ فيه

    داخلاً خارجاً أغيب وأَنْصُلْ

    My way is just to go in and out,

    Disappearing and slipping away.

  4. شهوةُ القلب لبْثُه بين أيدٍ

    وشفائي ترددي بين أرْجُلْ

    My heart's desire is to linger between hands

    And my cure is going back and forth on feet.

  5. هَمُّ ذاك العِناقُ والنيكُ هَمّي

    وكلانا في شأنه ليس يَغفُلْ

    That embrace and kiss are my concern,

    And we both do not neglect our affair.

  6. وليَ الدهرَ طعنةٌ ذاتُ غَوْرٍ

    غير أن لستُ حينَ أطعنُ أَقْتُلْ

    Though life has wounded me with a deep gash,

    I do not kill when I strike.

  7. وتَرى لي كريمةُ القومِ حقّاً

    وذِماماً وحُرْمةً حين أمْثُلْ

    And you see the noblewoman is truly mine,

    As a protector and sanctity when I represent myself.

  8. وعليها يخفُّ لي لا لغيري

    كلُّ شيء من التكاليف يَثْقُلْ

    And for me alone what is heavy

    Of obligations lightens through her.

  9. ولهذا تُجيبني حين أدعو

    غيرَ معتاصةٍ فأعلو وتَسْفُلْ

    That's why she answers when I call

    Without resisting, so I rise and she yields.

  10. كلُّ حبّ تَعمُّلٌ وهَوى الحس

    ناء إياي من خلاف التعمُّلْ

    Every love is labor but my passion

    For her is without toil.

  11. ومتى طاوعتْ فذاك طِباعٌ

    ومتى مانَعَتْ فذاك تدلُّلْ

    When she complies that is her nature

    And when she refuses that is her coquetry.

  12. وعليها تجمّلٌ فإذا ما

    عاينتْني فما عليها تَجَمُّلْ

    For me she adorns herself so when

    She sees me she does not pretend.

  13. ولديها تبتُّلٌ فإذا ما

    غاب في الخاقِ باقِ زال التبَتُّلْ

    For her I yearn so when I'm absent

    In the horizon the yearning does not cease.

  14. وليَ العطرُ والملابسُ

    كلُّه والتقتُّلْ

    I have the perfume and clothes,

    All of it and the slaying.

  15. وإذا خَسَّ في المعاشر قدْري

    فلديها يجلُّ قدْري وينبُلْ

    And if my worth sinks among the company

    For her my worth is exalted and ennobled.

  16. وبها ترعوي حياتي إذا مِتْ

    تُ وتشتدُّ قوّتي حين أذبلْ

    Through her my life is sustained if I

    Die and my strength increases when I wither.
