1. حَبَّبَتْ دُرَّةُ القِيانَ إلينا

    مثل ما بَغَّضَتْ إلينا القيانا

    The pearl of Al-Qian charmed us,

    As Al-Qian itself had repelled us.

  2. حَبَّبتْهنَّ أن غدتْ وهي منهنْ

    نَ وإنْ كُنَّ دونَها أوزانا

    It charmed us when it shone among them,

    Though they were its match in weight.

  3. ولقدُ فزن إذْ يُناغِينَ فاها

    ويديْها وعُودها الألحانا

    It excelled when it began singing

    With its hands and tuneful lute.

  4. وتحرَّمْنَ إذْ غدوْنَ إماءً

    مذعناتٍ بحقها إذعانا

    They became forbidden when they came as maidens

    Bowing to its right humbly.

  5. تلبَسُ التَّاجَ فالقِيانُ لديْها

    واضعات لتاجها الأذقانا

    It would wear the crown while Al-Qian

    Placed their crowns on their cheeks.

  6. تاجُ حُسْنٍ يَثْنيهِ تاجٌ من الإح

    سان تاجانِ طالما مَلكانا

    A crown of beauty folded by a crown of kindness -

    Two crowns that long ruled.

  7. غير أني رأيتُها بغَّضَتْهُنْ

    نَ بأن لم تدعْ لهنَّ مكانا

    Yet I saw it disgusted them

    By not leaving space for them.

  8. نزلت في الصدور منزل من بر

    رَزَ حُسْناً ومن علا إحسانا

    It descended into breasts like rain

    That brought beauty and exceeded kindness.

  9. فنفتْهنَّ عن قلوبٍ وقدْ كن

    نَ تبوَّأْنَ حبها أوطانا

    So it dismissed them from hearts

    Where it had settled as home.

  10. فغدا البائساتُ منهنَّ يَطْلبْ

    ن على دفعِ ظُلمها أعوانا

    The wretches among them began seeking

    Allies to stop its injustice.

  11. ظلمتْ من صَبا وغَنّى وكلٌّ

    يشتكِي من دريرةَ العدوانا

    It wronged those it sang to and every

    One complains of Durayra's aggression.

  12. أنصفَ اللَّهُ صاحبَ العذْلِ منها

    عاشقاً والمحسّنات الحسانا

    May God grant justice to the lover

    And benefactors of goodness.

  13. ما نبالي إذا دُرَيْرة أبدتْ

    نُزْهَتَيْها ألا نرى بستانا

    We care not if Durayra showed

    Her chastity - we saw no garden.

  14. نزهة الطرفِ شْفعها نزهة السم

    ع إذا ناغمتْ لك العيدانا

    The delight of sight vouched by delight of sound

    When it sang the tunes for you.

  15. ذات وجهٍ كأنَّما قيلَ كُنْ فر

    داً بديعاً بلا نظيرٍ فكانا

    One whose face is as though it was said "Be!"

    So it became a unique marvel.

  16. فيهِ عينان ترميانِ بلحْظٍ

    نافذِ النَّبْلِ يصرع الأقرانا

    In it are two eyes that glance

    With piercing arrows to fell peers.

  17. فوق غُصن مُهَفْهفٍ تلثم التفْ

    فاح فيه وتلمس الرمَّانا

    Above a swaying branch, she kisses

    The apple blossoms and touches pomegranates.

  18. تجتلي خلقها فتلقَى قواماً

    خيزراناً وصِبْغةً أرجوانا

    Her beauty manifests, taking on

    A slender figure and complexion of pink.

  19. لونُها الدهر واحدٌ كجَني الور

    د وإن كان وُدُّها ألوانا

    Her color is ever the same as a rosebud

    Though her affection varies.

  20. بينما وصلُها لذي الوُدّ وصلٌ

    إذ أحالته بالقِلى هجرانا

    While her connection to the beloved lasted,

    She estranged him by changing affection.

  21. كَمُلَتْ كلها فلستَ ترى في

    ها سوى سوء عهدها نُقصانا

    Perfect she is, you see in her

    Only the flaw of her broken promise.

  22. فمتى ما أجلتَ طرفكَ فيها

    فهْي كالشمسِ صُوِّرتْ إنسانا

    So when you glance upon her,

    She is pictured like the sun itself.

  23. ومتى ما سمعتَ منها فَشَدْوٌ

    يطرد الهمَّ عنك والأحزانا

    And when you hear her singing,

    It dispels sorrow and anguish from you.

  24. قادرٌ أن يُميتَ أشجانَ قوم

    قادرٌ أن يُهيِّجَ الأشجانا

    Able to revive the passions of some,

    Able to stir passions in others.

  25. ومتى ما لثمتَ فاها فشيْءٌ

    تجد الراحَ فيه والريحانا

    And when you kiss her mouth, something

    You find comfort and basil in.

  26. ريقةٌ كالشَّمولِ طِيباً ونشرٌ

    كنسيم الشمال خاضَ الجنانا

    A saliva as fragrant as musk, a breath

    Like a north wind passing through gardens.

  27. صَغَّروها مخافةَ العيْنِ عَمْداً

    وهي أَعلى القيانِ قَدْراً وشانا

    They called her "Durayra" fearing the evil eye,

    Though she is highest in worth and repute.

  28. فَدَعَوْها دُرَيرةً وهي الدُّرْ

    رَةُ تَغْلُو فتأخذ الأثمانا

    When "Durra" means a pearl so precious

    It takes the highest prices.

  29. لو رآها في الجاهلِّية قومٌ

    عَبُدوها وجانَبُوا الأوثانا

    Had she been seen in the times of ignorance

    She'd be worshipped, shunning idols.

  30. هِيَ حُلْمِي إذا رَقَدْتُ وهَميِّ

    وسُرورِي ومُنْيتي يقظانا

    She is my dream when I sleep, my care

    And joy while awake.

  31. مع أنَّ الرُّقادَ قد خانَ عَهْدي

    مذ تكلَّفتُ حبلها الخَوَّانا

    Though sleep has betrayed our pact

    Since I undertook its treacherous rope.

  32. لا تزالُ القلوبُ تَصْبُو إليها

    أو تراها تُقلِّب الأجفانا

    Hearts never cease inclining towards her

    Whether seen or pictured in eyelids.

  33. فإذا تابعتْ سهامَ الهوى المح

    ض طلبنا هناك منها الأمانا

    So when she unleashes arrows of fatal love,

    We there seek safety from her.

  34. غيرُ حنَّانةٍ على عاشقيها

    حين تحتَثُّ عودها الحنَّانا

    Unlike one gentle to her lovers

    When she softly plucks the strings.

  35. غيرَ أَنَّا نُحبُّها كيفَ كانتْ

    ما أحبَّتْ أرواحُنا الأبدانا

    Yet we love her no matter what -

    Our souls never loved bodies.

  36. إن تُسلَّطْ على القلوبِ بلا جُر

    م فأحلى مُسَلَّطٍ سلطانا

    If she assaults hearts without sin,

    An assailant is sweetest when ruling.

  37. قل لمن عابها أحَلْتَ وأبطلْ

    تَ وناقضتَ بل بهتَّ العِيانا

    Say to those who blame her: "You have voided

    And nullified - indeed you have erred clearly!"

  38. ليت شِعري أوجهها عِبْتَ كلا

    أم تنقَّصْتَ جيدَها الحُسَّانا

    I wonder which of her features you disliked -

    Did you belittle her pretty neck?

  39. أم شواها إذا أغصَّ بُراها

    أم حَشاها أم فرعَها الفينانا

    Or find fault with it when it thickens with perfume?

    Or its branches or stems with fruit?

  40. أم ندى صَوْتِها إذا رجَّعَتْهُ

    في المثاني أم دلَّها الفتّانا

    Or the call of her voice when she repeats

    Melodies? Or her tantalizing guide?

  41. ليس فيها شيءٌ يعابُ لدينا

    غيرَ بُخْلٍ بنَيلها قد شجانا

    Nothing is blameworthy to us but

    Stinginess in her union that saddened us.

  42. عندها البخل بالنوال ولو بال

    طَيْفِ منها يزورنا أحيانا

    She's miserly in bestowing even an apparition

    That sometimes visits us.

  43. نعمةً كالغرام أوسعَنا اللَّ

    ه امتنانا بوصلها وامتحانا

    A boon like love has God expanded us

    In gratitude for her company and ordeal.

  44. طال ما طوَّلتْ على حُبّها اليو

    مَ وما قصَّرَتْ عليه الزمانا

    Long she has prolonged estrangement

    While time shortened union.

  45. تتغنَّى فالدهرُ يومٌ قصيرٌ

    وإذا ما جفتْ عَدِمْنا كَرانا

    She sings, and days are short,

    When she falls silent, we lose our minds.

  46. أيُّها السائِلي بها كيفَ حَمْدِي

    لجَداها لقيت عندي بيانا

    O questioner about her, how can I praise

    Her generosity, though you know.

  47. قد أَرَتنا وأسمعتْنا ولكنْ

    تركتْ كلَّ عاشقٍ ظمآنا

    She has shown and let us hear, but left

    Every lover thirsty.

  48. أفلا قائلٌ لها ذو احتسابٍ

    حين تحمي رُضابها العطشانا

    Will no just person tell her, as she protects

    Her grazing flocks from thirst:

  49. مَتِّعي هذه المراشف من ري

    قِك يا من يُمَتِّع الآذانا

    "Quench the thirst of these pastures with your saliva,

    O one who quenches ears!"

  50. واقسِمي العدْلَ في جوارِحِ قوم

    ترك الظلمُ بعضَها هَيمانا

    "And deal justice in the limbs of a people

    Whose injustice left some distressed, some blissful.

  51. لا تُنيلي جوارحاً ما تَمَنَّتْ

    وتُنيلي جوارحاً حِرْمانا

    Do not grant limbs what they wish

    And deprive other limbs!"

  52. أَرْشِفينا كما أريْتِ وأسمعْ

    تِ ولا تتركي الهوى صديانا

    "Allow us to drink as you have shown and let hear,

    And leave not love cut off."

  53. أنا واللَّهِ يا دريرةُ أهوا

    كِ وإن ذقتُ في هواك الهوانا

    By God, O Durayra, I love you,

    Though I have tasted disgrace in loving you.

  54. يا كثيباً عليهِ غصنٌ من البا

    نِ وفرعٌ يمجُّ مِسْكاً وبانا

    O hill on which is a banana branch

    And twigs dripping with musk and amber!

  55. أشْتَهِي أن أعَضَّ منكِ بناناً

    طال عَضِّي عليه مني البنانا

    I long to pluck ripe fruits from you,

    Prolong plucking as I pluck the fruits.

  56. حين تستمطرين أوتارك الدُّرْ

    رَ على السامعين والمَرْجانا

    When you rain your pearl strings

    Upon listeners and coral beads...

  57. لم أنلْ منكِ مذ هَوَيتُك حظّاً

    من نوالٍ سراً ولا إعلانا

    I have gained no share from you since loving you

    Neither secretly nor openly.

  58. غيرَ أني أبيتُ ليليَ حَيْرا

    نَ أُراعي من نَجْمِهِ حيرانا

    Except I spend my nights confused,

    Staring at its stars, perplexed.

  59. قد وصفْنا فمن غدا يتمارى

    فليزُرْنا نُقِمْ له البرهانا

    We have described, so let competitors come -

    We will establish proof for them.

  60. عندنا مَنْظَرٌ لها وسماعٌ

    كَفيانا لطالبٍ تبيانا

    We have a view of her, and hearing,

    Sufficient for one seeking clarity.
