1. خبّراني بهولِ يومِ الفراقِ

    أيّ صبرٍ يكون للمُشتاقِ

    Tell me of the agony of the day we parted

    What patience can the longing lover have?

  2. فلقد أصبحَ الفؤادُ كئيباً

    وغدا الدمعُ دائمَ الانسياقِ

    My heart has become depressed

    And my tears flow constantly

  3. وبراني الهوى وبرّح بي الوجْ

    د فأصبحتُ ذا حشاً خفّاقِ

    Passion has wounded me, and my cheek

    Has become hollow from much weeping

  4. بيّن البينُ فقْدَ خَوْدٍ رِداحٍ

    كعبةِ الحُسنِ فتنةِ العشاقِ

    He who was clearly manifest is now hidden

    Like the Kaaba of beauty, the seduction of lovers

  5. ودعَتْني فما رأى الطرفُ بدراً

    قبلها راكباً ظهورَ العِتاقِ

    She bid me farewell, and my eyes never saw

    One like her, riding the peak of glory

  6. مِلْتُ إذ ودّعَتْ وقلبيَ في نا

    رٍ تلظّى ودمعتي في اندفاقِ

    I grew weary when she bade farewell

    And my heart was aflame, my tears pouring

  7. لا رعى الله يوم ودّعَتِني الحِبُّ

    وصان الإلهُ يومَ التلاقي

    May God not bless the day when love bade me farewell

    And may God protect the day we reunite

  8. كم جوادٍ ذي مَيعةٍ صرعَتْهُ

    مع عزٍّ وقائع الأحداقِ

    How many spirited steeds felled

    Amidst glory and the calamities of war

  9. سقِّ يا أيها السحابُ دياراً

    سكنَتْها بوابلٍ غَيْداقِ

    O clouds, water the abode

    She dwelt in with pouring rain

  10. سقِّها سقِّ طال ما قد سقاها

    فيضُ دمعٍ من هائمٍ مُشتاقِ

    Water it, water it, so long has it been watered

    By the outpouring of a yearning, lovesick one

  11. يا خليليّ خلّياني فما العي

    شُ سوى أن أجوب في الآفاقِ

    O my friend, leave me be, living is naught

    But to wander through the horizons

  12. تارةً أقصدُ الشآم وطوراً

    نحو بغدادَ من بلادِ العراقِ

    At times I head for Syria, at others

    Toward Baghdad in the land of Iraq

  13. اطلُبِ الفضلَ عند مجتمَعِ الفض

    لِ ومُروي الرّفاق بعد الرفاقِ

    Seeking virtue in the assembly of nobles

    And the watering places of friends after friends

  14. عند صِنْوِ العدى وغَيظِ المعالي

    في اصطباح من شربها واغتباقِ

    With the hatred of enemies and wrath of glories

    In the mornings of those who drank it and took it by force

  15. مَنْ على الحاسدينَ سوطُ عذاب

    وعلى القاصدين ذو إشفاقِ

    For the envious, the whip of torment

    And for those with intentions, one of kindness

  16. عند نَدْبِ إذا بدا بين قوم

    فإليه تطاوُلُ الأعناقِ

    When calamity surfaces amongst people

    Necks crane toward him

  17. ذي عطايا تَتْرى دفاقٍ على النا

    سِ وناهيكَ من عطايا دفاقِ

    With overflowing gifts for the people

    And by no means meager gifts

  18. زُرْهُ تسلَمْ من كل سوءٍ وتأمنْ

    أبدَ الدهر سطوةَ الإملاقِ

    Visit him, safe from all evil

    And eternally secure from tyranny's onslaught

  19. أريحيٌّ مهذّبٌ أصمعُ القل

    بِ وفيٌّ بالعهد والميثاقِ

    Gentle, refined, wise of heart

    Loyal to his oath and covenant

  20. فرّقَ المال في اجتماعِ المعالي

    فحوى الاجتماعَ بالافتراقِ

    He spent his money gathered with nobles

    And so the gathering was parted

  21. ليس للحافظِ الإمام شبيهٌ

    في جميعِ الأقطار والآفاقِ

    None can equal the Imam Al-Hafiz

    In all corners of earth and horizons

  22. والذي قال إنه يشبه البدْ

    ر مُحالٌ تشبيهُهُ باتّفاقِ

    He who claims the full moon is his equal

    Is impossible in his comparison, by consensus

  23. وجهُ هذا يزدادُ نوراً ووجه ال

    بدرِ قد جاز فيه حكمُ المحاقِ

    The light of this face grows ever brighter

    While the moon itself has submitted to eclipse

  24. أيها الحافظُ الإمام المفدّى

    والكريمُ الأخلاقِ والأعراقِ

    O Imam Al-Hafiz, emancipator

    Noble of character and lineage

  25. جُدْتَ حتى طوقتَ جيدَ البرايا

    طوقَ جودٍ وليس طوق خِناقِ

    You have been so generous, you have collared

    The neck of generosity, not the strangling collar

  26. أنت أصبحتَ عاشقاً للمعالي

    وأراها قليلة العُشاقِ

    You have become enamored of glory

    And I see few who so love it

  27. غلَّقَ الناسُ بابَهُمْ وغدا

    بابُكَ والله مجمَعَ الأسواقِ

    People have shut their doors

    While yours, by God, is the marketplace of people

  28. أنت منا يا أيها الحبرُ في مو

    ضع حَبِّ القلوب والأحداقِ

    You are one of us, O scholar, in the position

    Of loving hearts and piercing gazes

  29. وغداةَ اتّجعْتَ قد ضاقتِ الأر

    ضُ علينا كأنّنا في وَثاقِ

    When you became frail, the earth grew straitened

    As if we were bound in shackles

  30. والذي لا يغُمّهُ وعَكٌ نا

    لكَ والله ما له من خَلاقِ

    By God, he who is not saddened by your weakness

    Has no humanity

  31. فدعونا يا سرّنا وتضرّعْ

    نا الى مالك الورى الخلاقِ

    So spare us, O our secret, and plead

    To the Lord of all Creation

  32. عش وقاكَ الإلهُ سائرَ أحدا

    ثِ الليالي ناهيكَهُ من واقِ

    May God protect you from all misfortunes

    In the long nights, not to mention from want

  33. وابْقَ واسلَمْ في العزّ لا زلْتَ يسقي

    كَ على حالِه من الغيث ساقِ

    Endure and live safely in glory eternally

    With the clouds raining upon you as before
