1. My lord, your servant complains

of a weakness your absence only deepens.

  2. His love for you, as you know it,

will never be at odds with your love.

  3. And indeed, his heart suspects

things that your heart has kept concealed.

  4. So, by Him who made high glory

a whip with which you spur your steeds,

  5. and saw you utterly without peer,

your uniqueness made manifest by excellence—

  6. look upon him: he has never been

gold your assay could expose as counterfeit.

  7. He is a garden—far be it from you

to let it wither, when your returning rains are its waterer—

  8. and an intent of gratitude that has never ceased

to flow wherever your purpose desires.

  9. A broken promise from you fills him with doubt;

yet promise-breaking has only paid you a visit.

  10. Gently, Abu al-Hasan—you whose steed

has never stumbled in the course of generosity.

  11. Tell me: is your driving me away through this

aversion from me, or merely your playful chase?

  12. Or have the tale-bearers’ words proved true—

some charge for which your judgment suspects me?

  13. If so, then your sword-belt has helped

    my enemies to kill me.

  14. You have grown strange in my eyes,

while you prosper in your lands—

  15. there, where your cloud gives no water

to me, and your firesteel kindles no spark.
