هيهاتَ تعطِفُ بالملام جَموحا
وتغضّ طَرفاً من هواه طَموحا
In vain you chide the obdurate,
Or bid a roving eye forbear:
ألِفَتْ جوارحُهُ الضّنى وجفونُه
بُعْدَ الكَرى وفؤادُه التّبريحا
Long since those eyelids learnt to frown,
Those cheeks to mock the trickling tear.
يا مُهدياً نحوي الملامةَ إنما
أهديتَ نحو الجَمرِ منها الرّيحا
Away! Your chiding but provokes
A breast that spurns the idle breath;
إن كنتَ تجهلُ ما لقيتُ فسَلْ به
جَفني القريحَ ودمعيَ المَسْفوحا
Nay ask these sleepless eyes that weep
My long, long vigil, and my death.
