Restore her early days once more,
Though fevered tremors shake her sore,
And change her couch of woes for rest,
Her burning rage for gentle zest.
Spare her the heights where healers toil,
And meet the drooping willows' coil,
And scent the breeze of eventide,
To cool love's flame, and tumult hide.
Above, all victims of the sword
Now plunge, as plunges each self-gored.
The wind asks as their herald sad,
And oft their messages has had.
No eastern wind but to me came,
Wild in its folds romantic flame.
Give o'er the cup, for I espy
A beautiful doe's glance thereby.
There bubbles still joy's limpid wine,
Flowing 'twixt love and care divine.
You'd think him with his mantle's fold
A lance, his languid lids bells bold.
Oft have I kissed his moonlike sphere
In union sweet, clasping his spear.
When nests were objects of my care,
For eggs I set up many a snare.
No fear have I my love may swerve,
Or weeping speed his journey's curve.
I pluck fruits from the boughs in bud,
And drink at love's well in flood.
Today I'll beg a cloud fast fleeting
To shower on them, and moon retreating.
I seem but one departed far,
Or helpless, calling squires to war.
The cloud has wet a garden fair,
And left my heart for it wise care.
Or care's repose has charmed me so,
For it taught clouds rain to bestow.
Therewith God made the times shine bright,
When low before he gained such height.
If Time were given form, 'twould take
Its crown from him, its knots unbreak.
O student, draw from his life's spring
Whose depths no minds can fathoming!
O poverty's prisoner, by his door
Knock, rest and bounty to implore!
Munificence is spread afar,
And glory triumphs high and far,
While from his house all penury,
Thanksgiving graces, cease to flee.
A horseman skilled his keen wit stripped,
And up steep hills his works equipped.
The moon's fair charms are like a spell,
If you but gaze, their grandeur tell.
Scent the rose‐garden, and you'll find
His fragrance breathes to please the mind.
To him the birds winged hastened through
Valley and hill their robes to strew‐
Complain not if the path seems long,
His zeal has nerved the weak and strong.
O thou who strives for each denied,
And learnedest for each unapplied!
Thou freedom gave to Easter Day,
So be our Feast fulfilled alway!
And greet the morn when ring doves coo,
When branches wave, and zephyrs woo.
