O you, do not speak,
Be silent, do not complain,
Don't you know that I
Have become an old fool,
I have become an absent-minded youth,
In my embroidered garment,
So beat your drums after this,
If you wish, or whistle,
And thunder with anger
At me, or lighten,
And tap your fingers, then after that,
If you wish, clap your hands.
I who have lost my dignity
Before wearing the noose,
I who have wandered both
East and West with no guide,
I, my brothers,
Love eating pistachios,
Figs, almonds, pine seeds,
And hazelnuts.
O you, show mercy,
Stop, be gentle,
Yes, yes, yes, yes,
It's time for us to meet,
In a lofty, intoxicated state,
Beyond any other intoxication,
Look, the dawn on the horizon
Above, like a golden boat,
More generous than any boat,
And the water in the river becomes
Like a blue sword,
Thus the color of the flowers
Is like the color of mercury,
And the roses like cheeks, the narcissi like eyes,
Oh what an affected, pretentious, pompous one!
With a supple, rosy cheek,
Like the glow of sunset,
And black hair
Like the blackness of nightfall,
And a figure swaying
Like a moist, leafy branch.
O her beauty swaggering
In that blue dress!
O you, when he appeared
On the elegant horse,
And rolled up his sleeves
To the elbow joints,
And intended to jump with the elegant one
Across the moat,
I hung on him and became,
From intense passion, anxious,
Alas! Whoever I find him with
I will seize him in the streets,
And I do not fear a critic
Who criticizes me in my passion,
And I am not the youth
Who heeds the words of slanderers.
O my critic, leave my criticism,
If only I had not been created!
People, no doubt, will then
Be happy or miserable.
The happy one is the pious, virtuous Imam,
And whoever envies him
Is the miserable one forever.
