  1. هم يعذلوا من يسمع

    من كلام من عدّاله

    They blame those who listen

    To the words of one who reproved them.

  2. أنا شيطانُ عِشقي

    في المحبةِ مارِدْ

    I am a devil of love,

    Unruly in affection.

  3. وعَذولي يضربُ

    في حديدٍ بارِدْ

    My reproof strikes

    With cold iron.

  4. وليس يَردي زاهِدْ

    وليس يُرْدي عائدْ

    No ascetic turns me back,

    No penitent makes me retreat.

  5. خلقَ اللهُ الإنسانْ

    وخلقَ أعمالَهْ

    God created man

    And created his actions.

  6. من عذولٍ ليس يسمعْ

    من عذولٍ ليس يعقِلْ

    From reproof that hears not,

    From reproof that understands not.

  7. وعَذولي المسكينْ

    في المحبّةِ جاهِلْ

    My poor reproof

    Is ignorant in affection.

  8. نام في بالِه

    أني بكلامِه أعمَلْ

    He thinks in his mind

    That I act on his words.

  9. وإني ليسَ أعمَلْ

    بما يقومُ في بالِه

    But I do not act

    On what goes on in his mind.

  10. إني لأعْشَقُ أن من

    لا يَهوى ويَعشَقْ

    I do love that he who

    Loves not should love.

  11. الجملُ حُسينٌ يَسكُتْ

    والحِمارُ حُسَيْنٌ ينطِقْ

    The camel is beautiful in silence,

    The donkey is beautiful speaking.

  12. واللهِ إني صادقٌ

    ولقد قلتُ الحَقْ

    By God I speak truth.

    Indeed I have spoken truth.

  13. وكثيراً من قَبلي

    مثلُ قوْلي قالوا

    And many before me

    Have spoken like my words.
