Morning cleaved the shackles of darkness
And the knot of stars in Gemini unraveled
The crowns of flowers in the meadows were adorned
With the wonders of dewdrops' pearls
The breeze flowed, shaking off its cloak
Rustling through the falling raindrops
The doves rose on the pulpits of branches
Announcing the eloquence of orators' tongues
Calling, as the air softened, to the graceful
Flock whose whiteness flowered
Had he not been the king of birds, he would not have bent
To walk with the gait of the proud, crowned
The wine of early dawn sipped
To the dance of branches and coo of doves
With cheeks that seem as though their brows
Are full moons gleaming in the gloom of darkness
As if with the palm that shades her eyelids
She holds a fire kindled in water
In the magic of her glances and wine of her saliva
Is the madness of minds and ruin of limbs
O killer of eyes, for they are
My sickness, which I bear, and my remedy
O you, stop! For were it not that I
Cannot break a pact or loyalty
I would have achieved what I hope for with real effort
Like a nimble climber scaling a black mountain
And come to your abode with companions
Who took their courage from their fathers
And revealed, O Asma, the sweet greeting
And fragrant red rose to them
But I headed to endurance and did not say
Burden me with separation from the fickle
Patience compelled me when I saw
Youth coming and leaving behind me
And I heard the caller to generosity's feast
Inviting the company of the poor
So I saddled the steeds of grace who never complain
Of night journeys or long travels
With swords of water sheathed at their sides
Polished bare, gleaming in the white desert
I rejoiced when I arrived at his door
With my luggage, the happiest of faces
And I attained between his right hand and brow
Timeless manner and full moon
The spreading of his conversation and gardens
Diffused the breath of a melodious meadow
His eloquence and radiant face filled
The ear of the listener and eye of the beholder
A cup of good deeds, and he is
Protected from the shame of flaws
Fierce yet gentle of nature
Like time, combining ease and hardship
Open-handed with bounty, pouring generosity
Like rainfall on vegetation and plains
In vile times his brilliance grows
Like the full moon on a clear night
Dispelling with his counsel the clouds of afflictions
For fortune favors the sound of mind
Delighting in two wines - the wine of nobility
From which he never refrains, and the wine of modesty
O son of nobles, the call of one made glad
By your shunning of the arrogant
Congratulations on an Eid that recounted your virtues
Though you then eclipse even peers
If one could articulate, due to your stature in his eyes,
Joining the ranks of poets
