1. أظنّهُ حاذرَ سُلوانا

    يسْتامُهُم وصْلاً وهِجْرانا

    I think he is wary of our trysts

    Whether in union or parting

  2. واستعْذَبَ العذْلَ لذكراهُمُ

    وكان لا يعرِفُ نِسيانا

    And though separation pains him

    He knows not how to forget

  3. وإنّما أوجسَ في نفْسه

    تسميةُ الإنسانِ إنسانا

    Yet he sensed in his soul

    The essence of being human

  4. يا قاتلَ الله فُنونَ الهَوى

    فكلّ فنٍ منهُ أفْنانا

    O Killer of the arts of passion

    Each art from you is ruined

  5. أصبحتِ الغُزلانُ أُسْداً به

    وصارتِ الآسادُ غِزْلانا

    The does have become lions with him

    And lions does again

  6. مصارعٌ يعرِفُها كلُّ مَنْ

    يعرفُ يَبْرينَ ونُعْمانا

    A battlefield known to all who know

    Yabreen and No'man too

  7. يا ذا الذي يطلُبُ لي مالكاً

    سائلْ هَداك الله رِضوانا

    O you who seek a confidante for me

    May God guide you to satisfaction

  8. أطْلَقَ من جنّتِه شادِناً

    قد ملأ الأحشاءَ نيرانا

    He unleashed from his paradise a fawn

    Filled with fiery desire

  9. فاصْطادَهُ القلبُ وما صادَهُ

    وكان ما قِيلَ وما كانا

    My heart hunted but didn't catch him

    As was said and was done

  10. وا عجباً أغربَ في الهَوى

    فردّني أحلُمُ يَقْظانا

    Oh wonder! A stranger to passion

    My dream state returns me to wakefulness

  11. يا خاطري لا نوْمَ من بعدِ أنْ

    رأيتُ شمسَ المُلْكِ نَبْهانا

    My thoughts no more sleep after

    Seeing the sun of kingship shining bright

  12. قلّدَهُ فكرُك في نحرِه

    دُرّاً من المدْحِ ومَرْجانا

    Your mind adorned him with a necklace

    Of praise and coral intertwined

  13. أفضالُه عبّرن عن فضلهِ

    هل أصبحَ الإحسانُ حسانا

    His merits speak of his virtue

    Has benevolence become beautiful?

  14. شهْم شأى يوسُفَ في حُسنِه

    وبذّ في المُلْكِ سُلَيْمانا

    His beauty rivals Joseph's

    His rule Solomon's own

  15. تجْنيه سُمْرُ الخطّ عذبُ الجَنى

    وهي التي تنْعَتُ مرآنا

    His elegant scribe yields sweet harvest

    She who is called a mirror

  16. فمَنْ رأى من قبلِها معرَكاً

    يَحولُ في الحالةِ بُسْتانا

    So who before her saw a battle

    Turn instantly into a garden

  17. أنزِلْ به في الحي من مازنٍ

    ولا تخَفْ ذُهْلَ بن شَيْبانا

    Challenge him in combat like Ma'zin

    Fear not Thuhl ibn Shayban

  18. ورد بحارَ الجودِ زخّارةً

    تظْما لأنْ تُبصِرَ ظمآنا

    Make the seas of generosity turbulent

    Lest the thirsty see still pools

  19. ولا تلجّجْ إنْ طَما موجُها

    فربّما أصبحَ طُوفانا

    Don't fret if its waves foam and swell

    For it may yet become a flood

  20. أفتكُ ما كان بحيثُ القَنا

    يلفّ بالفُرسانِ فُرْسانا

    It destroys whatever by the lance

    Was deemed a horseman or serpent

  21. والنقْعُ قد مدّ رُواقَ الدُجى

    وأطلعَ الخَرْصانُ شَهْبانا

    The starry night has unfurled its cloak

    And the Pleiades shine again

  22. والبيضُ نحو الزعْفِ ممتدةٌ

    جداولٌ تتبعُ غُدْرانا

    The white antelopes stretched toward the meadow

    Brooks chasing rivulets

  23. والخيلُ عُقبانٌ ترى فوقَها

    عَقْبان أعلامٍ وعُقبانا

    The steeds, hooves aloft, above them

    The banners' poles, like hooves again

  24. من كلّ من جرَّ كعوبَ القَنا

    فخلتَهُ ليثاً وثُعْبانا

    All whose heels grazed the lance's orbit

    You left lion or snake profane

  25. يظنّهُ مادحُه أيكةً

    وإن رآهُ القرن ثهلانا

    Though he who praises thinks him a hero

    Were the century to glimpse, just a fox

  26. ذو العزْمِ لو يُطيعُ ذا شفرةٍ

    ما جازَ أن يسْكُن أجفانا

    One of strong resolve should he follow

    A man of daggers, would not sleep

  27. والبأسُ لا واللهِ ما نارُهُ

    مما روَوْهُ لابن كَنعانا

    By God, its fire is not what they claim

    Of the Son of Canaan's line

  28. والرأيُ لو كان لعَدْوانَ لم

    يخفْ من الأيام عُدْوانا

    Opinion, had it sided with injustice, would not

    Have feared the days of wrong

  29. والجودُ ما نازعَ فيه الحَيا

    إلا حَوى التهْتانُ بُهْتانا

    Generosity, when Fate contends with it

    Contains loss within loss

  30. والمنظرُ البهرُ قد قلت إذ

    نازعَ فيه البدرُ بُرْهانا

    And this glorious sight, I say, when

    The full moon contends with proof supreme

  31. هذا الكمالُ قد حَوى سعدَهُ

    يا بدرُ لن يُعْقِب نُقْصانا

    This perfection encompassed his good fortune

    O Moon! No loss can follow

  32. يا ماجداً نلتُ بأفنائه

    أوطارَ من لازمَ أوْطانا

    O Glorious One, in your shadows

    I gained places that settled me

  33. أحرزتَ عن عينِ الزمانِ العُلى

    دمتَ لتلك العينِ إنسانا

    You gained from the discerning age the sublime

    May you remain for that eye, human.
