للمرءِ قبلَ سماعِ وعظِ الواعظِ

من نفسه تبدو أجلُّ مواعظِ

Before listening to the preacher's sermon

Advice that comes from within is far superior

فاطلُبْ طريقَ العدلِ لا تعدلْ مدى ال

أيامِ عنه وقل لنفسك حافظي

So seek the path of justice, do not deviate

From it, and say to yourself "be mindful!"

واكنُفْ لحاظَك ما حييتَ فكم جوًى

أذكَتْهُ في الأحشاءِ لحظةُ لاحِظِ

And shield your gaze for as long as you live

For how many desires has an instant ignited in one's heart!

يا طالباً للكيمياءِ أقِلّ قد

أصبحتَ ويْكَ حليفَ عيشٍ باهظِ

O seeker of alchemy, your means are few

Yet your lifestyle is lavish

ما صحّ علمُ الكيمياءِ لغيرِ مُد

احِ الإمام الأريحيّ الحافظِ

The science of alchemy cannot be sound

Except through the efforts of Imam Al-Arahi the vigilant

يعطيهمُ الأموالَ إذ يُعطونَه

لفظاً وما مقدارُ لفظِ اللافظِ

They give them money when the latter only

Offer words, and what are words worth from the gabbler!

في حِلمِ أحنفَ يستبينُ وفي توا

ليف ابنِ بحرٍ ذي العلوم الجاحظِ

In the dreams of the fair-minded, clarity is apparent

And in the works of Ibn Bahr the prolific scholar

يُحيي الثناءَ وغيرُه في غفلةٍ

عنه وما المُشْتارُ مثل القارظِ

He brings praise to life while others negligently

Forget him, for who is like the watchful critic!

دامَ الزمانُ على الثواب محافظاً

وعلى ارتكابِ الإثْمِ غير محافظِ

May time always reward good deeds

And abstain from committing sins without being mindful
