وعلِقْتُه متعلِّقاً
بالخطّ معتَكِفاً عليْهِ
I hung it, hanging
On the line, secluded with it
حملَ الدواةَ ولا دَوا
ءَ لعاشقٍ يُرجى لَدَيْهِ
It carried the inkpot but no cure
For a lover whose love could be hoped for
فدماءُ حبّاتِ القلو
بِ تلوحُ صِبْغاً في يدَيْهِ
So the blood of loving hearts
Appears as a dye on its hands
ما لي إذا أبصرتُه
شُغْلٌ سوى نظَري إليهِ
What is there for me if I see it
Beyond my gaze upon it?
والحبُّ يُخرسُني على
أنني ألكّعُ سيبوَيْهِ
And love makes me mute
That I complain to it of my affliction
كم قلتُ قبل لقائه
أشكو إليه مُقلتَيْهِ
How often before meeting it
Did I complain to it of my sorrow?
