1. أبعد شَيْبي لشبابي إيابْ

    هيهاتَ لا يرجع شرخُ الشبابْ

    After my youth, I long for my past youthhood

    Alas, the breach of youthhood will never return

  2. أم هلْ لمن عرّضني للعِتابْ

    وهل يُرجّى بعد ذا الاجتنابْ

    Or is there hope after this avoidance

    For one who exposed me to blame?

  3. فالقلبُ مني في أليمِ العذابْ

    ودمعُ عينيّ كقطرِ السّحابْ

    My heart is in painful torment

    And tears of my eyes like drops of clouds

  4. وظبيةٍ مثلِ ظِباءِ الشِّعابْ

    رقيقةِ الخدّيْن مثل الشّرابْ

    And a gazelle like the gazelles of the rugged land

    Smooth of cheeks like drinking

  5. في ثغرها الشّهْدُ لعمري مُذابْ

    طُوبى لمنْ يرشُفُ ذاك الرُضابْ

    In her mouth, honey for my life dissolved

    Blessed is he who sips that wine

  6. في كفّها حمراء مثلُ الشِّهابْ

    صافيةٌ رقّتْ كمِثلِ السّراب

    In her hands red like embers

    Pure, delicate like a mirage

  7. تذهبُ بالحقدِ معا والضِّباب

    لها بشخصين ربوعٌ خراب

    She takes away hatred and fog together

    She has two lovely dwellings

  8. ومنزلٍ بالجزعِ منهم يَبابْ

    كنتُ به مع زينبٍ والرَّباب

    And a house which floods with sadness

    Where I was with Zainab and Rabab

  9. وهلْ مع الدهرِ يدومُ اصطحابْ

    أُصبحُ في ظُفْرٍ له ثمّ نابْ

    Does companionship with time last?

    I gain victory for it then it escapes

  10. درّتْ عليه غادياتُ الرّبابْ

    فأظهرَتْ بُرْداً بلونٍ عُجابْ

    The maidens of Rabab passed by it

    So they showed coolness with amazing color

  11. قد رقمَتْهُ ثم أيدي السّحابْ

    ومَهْمهٍ قفرٍ كثير الهضابْ

    Then the hands of clouds mapped it

    And an empty deserted place full of rocks

  12. فيه الشماريخُ وصُمُّ الصِّلاب

    به المها والعِينُ ثمّ الذئابْ

    In it are the starlings, and silence of stillness

    In it are the ostriches, and then the wolves

  13. قطعْتُه إبّان عصر الشّبابْ

    والشمسُ إذ ذلك تحت الحجابْ

    I crossed it in the afternoon of my youth

    And the sun at that time below the veil

  14. والليلُ من فوقِ الرُبى كالخِضابْ

    بمُنطوي الأحشاءِ طيّ الكتابْ

    And the night above the hill like kohl

    With a book of folded lines

  15. أقَبّ شاطٍ أسودٍ كالغراب

    تراه كالأجدلِ في الانتِصابْ

    I came near a dark shore like the raven

    You see it like the writhing viper

  16. وحين ينقَضُّ كمثلِ العُقابْ

    أو فكلَمْحِ البرقِ أو كالشِّهابْ

    And when it pounces like an eagle

    Or in a flash of lightning or like a shooting star

  17. وكان فيما قد فعلْتُ الصّواب

    حتى أتينا مَن إليه الرِّكابْ

    And I was doing the right thing

    Until we came to whom riders head

  18. نَبغي إماماً ظلّ فوق الرِّقابْ

    لأن جدواهُ كماءِ السَّحابْ

    We want an imam whose shade was over necks

    For his generosity like rain clouds
