أرَوْهُ الجلّنارَ من الخُدودِ
واخفَوْا عنه رمّان النهودِ
I saw him dragged in shackles
While archers hid behind palms
وحلَّوْا مقلتيه بدُرِّ دمعٍ
تبسّم في المخانِقِ والبرودِ
His eyelids flowed with tears
Smiling amidst the ropes and poles
وهم نظَموا الفريدَ على نُحورٍ
فدمعُ العينِ يجري كالفَريدِ
They planted him atop ridges
His blood flowed like a stream
وما غرَسوا نخيلَ العيسِ إلا
وهمْ فيها من الطَلْعِ النضيد
They only planted the palms of Jesus
To bear ripe heavy clusters
يُثنّين المعاطفَ في قيامٍ
ويُفعِمْنَ الروادفَ في قُعودِ
Folding cloaks in prayer
Filling litters in repose
وكثبانٌ ترجْرجَ في مُروطٍ
وقضبانٌ ترنّحُ في بُرودِ
Sands murmuring in shifts
Poles moaning in the cold
ويكسرن الجفونَ على لِحاظٍ
هي الأسيافُ تحفل بالغُمودِ
Breaking lids on beddings
Swords dripping with red blood
بعثْن على النوى جيشَ التداني
وسلّطْنَ الوصالَ على الصُدودِ
Sending armies to track the spy
Releasing tryst on the blocked road
فبات الطيفُ يقضي الطرفَ دَيْناً
تقاضتْهُ كفالاتُ الهُجودِ
The specter spends the night exacting a debt
Guaranteed by the generous
وكم جذبَ الصبا طرفَيْ عِناني
فغادرَهُ بسالفتَيْ شُرود
How often the dawn drew my reins
Leaving me confused in my wanderings
سقى مصراً وساكنُها مُلِثٌّ
صليلُ البرقِ صخّابُ الرعودِ
It irrigated a barren land
The lightning's glitter, the thunder's roar
ولو أني وجدتُ لقلت سُقْيا
يعاورُها على نايٍ وعودِ
Had I found I would have said Sukayna
Playing the flute to the tune of lute
مواردُ بي لها عطشٌ شديدٌ
ولكنْ لا سبيلَ الى الورودِ
My love for you is burning thirst
But no access to the meadows
هل الرأي السديدُ البعدُ عنها
نعم إنْ كان للشيخِ السديد
Is staying away the wise opinion?
Yes, if the elder approves
إليكَ قطعتُ لا طوفانَ نخْل
ليُنزلَني على جوديّ جُودِ
I have hastened to you, no flood destroys palms
To take me to your extreme generosity
فصحّ وقد رأيتُك كلُّ وعدٍ
ملكتُ به مناجزةَ الوُعودِ
Wake, I have seen you, every promise
I possessed by competing in vows
معي خِلَعُ الثناء وليس منها
خليعٌ إن عزَمْتُ على الجديدِ
With me are garments of praise, nothing shameful
If I am determined to renew
