1. هل يا حُداة النُجُبِ

    للركب من منقلَبِ

    O youths of noble lineage,

    Is there respite for the caravan

  2. والعيشُ لما عزَموا

    على النّوى لم يَطبِ

    Whose life when resolved

    Upon purpose did not please?

  3. سارتْ بقلبي عيسُهمْ

    وا أسَفي وا حرَبي

    Their image moved my heart,

    Oh my sorrow, oh my grief,

  4. من حُبّ أحوى أغيدٍ

    مهفهَفٍ محجَّبِ

    For love of the beloved Ahid,

    Delicate and veiled.

  5. زرى بحسنِ وجهه

    على ابنِ يعقوبَ النّبي

    He visited me with his beauty,

    The son of Jacob the prophet.

  6. عِذارُه في خدّه

    كأرقمٍ أو عقربِ

    His charm on his cheek

    Like a snake or scorpion.

  7. تيّمني بحُسنه

    ظبيٌ سريعُ الغضب

    His beauty brought me blessing,

    A gazelle quick to anger.

  8. علِقْتُه فليس لي

    عن حبّه من مهربِ

    I clung to him but I have for his love

    No escape or refuge.

  9. أعاذِلي في حُبّه

    لم تُصِبِ لم تُصِبِ

    Reproach me for his love,

    You did not hit, you did not hit,

  10. تعذُلُني في رشأٍ

    أرى هواهُ مذهبي

    You blame me wrongly

    When I see his love enchants me.

  11. ما إن رآه البدرُ إل

    ا واختفى في السُحُبِ

    When the moon saw him

    It hid itself in the clouds.

  12. يا ويحَهُ ما بالُه

    بصدّه معذّبي

    Oh woe to me, what is with him

    Tormenting me with his aloofness?

  13. ما ضرّه لو جادَ لي

    بلثمِ ذاك الشّنبِ

    No harm if he would grant me

    A kiss from those lips.

  14. يا رُبّ ليلٍ زارني

    في غفلة المرتَقِب

    O Lord of a night he visited me

    In the heedlessness of the watcher,

  15. فخِلتُه بدراً بدا

    على قضيبِ ذهبِ

    So I left him as a full moon appeared

    On a rod of gold,

  16. أو طلعةَ الشيخ الإما

    م ذي الحِجى والحسب

    Or the rising of the Shaykh Al-Imam

    Of lineage and merit,

  17. خير الورى قاطبةً

    من عجَمٍ أو عرَبِ

    The best of all humanity

    Arab or non-Arab,

  18. الحافظِ الحبرِ الإما

    مِ الشافعي المذهب

    The preserver, the scholar, the Imam

    Of the Shafi'i doctrine,

  19. هو الكريمُ بن الكري

    مِ الأنجبُ بن الأنجبِ

    He is the generous son of the generous

    The most noble son of the most noble,

  20. مَن حسنُه كيوسفٍ

    ونطقُه كيعْرُبِ

    Whose beauty rivals Joseph’s

    And whose speech rivals Ya’rub’s.

  21. ومن نداهُ دائماً

    يفيضُ فيضَ السُحُبِ

    His munificence always overflowing

    Like the pouring of the clouds,

  22. ومن علَتْ همّته

    على السُهى والعقربِ

    And whose ambition soared

    Above pleasure and fortune,

  23. ومن غدَتْ ألفاظُه

    مشرقةً كالكوكبِ

    And whose words shine

    Like a star.

  24. ومن أقلُّ خادمٍ

    يخدُمُه كثعلب

    The least of his servants

    Serves him like a fox.

  25. ومن إذا ناظرَ ير

    ضاهُ الإمامُ اليَثْربي

    And if the Imam of Yathrib

    And Al-Shafi’i the approved, the preferred

  26. والشافعيُّ المُرتضى ال

    مفضّلُ المطّلبي

    Gaze on him, they would be pleased.

    O my pillar, O my treasure,

  27. يا عُمدَتي يا عُدّتي

    يا جُنّتي في النّوَب

    O my paradise in tribulation,

    Congratulations on the month

  28. تهنّ بالشهر الذي

    حوى الصيامَ المُذهَبِ

    That contains the prescribed fast,

    Live long in the bounty

  29. وعشْ ودمْ في نِعَمٍ

    على ممرِّ الحِقَبِ

    Of fleeting epochs.

    No brilliant lightning flashed

  30. ما لاح برقٌ ساطعٌ

    في خفض عيشٍ طيّبِ

    In a pleasant, easy life.
