1. سنّدوها من القُدودِ رِماحا

    وانتضَوْها من الجُفونِ صِفاحا

    They propped it up with spears from the qudd (striped cloth)

    And wiped tears from the eyelids with sifaḥ (handkerchiefs)

  2. يا لها حالةً من السِّلْمِ حالَتْ

    فاستحالَتْ ولا كِفاحَ كِفاحا

    What a state of peace it had

    Which turned into tribulation without any effort

  3. صِحْ إذا درّتْ العيونُ دِماءً

    إنّهم أثخنوا القلوبَ جِراحا

    It's right to weep blood

    When they wounded the hearts with wounds

  4. يا فؤادي وقد أُخِذْتَ أسيراً

    أتقنْطَرْتَ أم وضعتَ السِّلاحا

    Oh my heart, you're now a captive

    Did you lose hope or lay down your weapons?

  5. عجباً للجفون وهيَ مِراضٌ

    كيف تستأسِرُ العُقولَ الصِّحاحا

    How astonishing that the eyelids, sick

    Imprison sound minds

  6. قُلْ لأعشارِكَ التي اقتسَموها

    ضربوا فيكِ بالعيونِ القِداحا

    Tell your tenth shares which they divided

    They drank from you with glances that stabbed

  7. آه من موقفٍ يودّ به المُغْ

    رَمُ لو مات قبلَه فاستراحا

    Alas, in a stance that makes one wish for death before

    So as to rest, not live

  8. حيثُ يخشى أن ينظِمَ اللثْمُ عِقْداً

    فيه أو يعقِدَ العِناقُ وِشاحا

    Where one fears the liṯm (mouth) will string pearls

    Or the ināq (embrace) will tie a cloak

  9. ظو المطايا جوامحٌ لِفراقِ

    تستحثّ البُكورُ فيه الرّواحا

    The mounts are wild due to separation

    Dawn among them hurries the spirits

  10. وجناحُ النّوى يضمُّ ظِباءً

    لم يخفْ في دم الأسود جُناحا

    The wings of resolve embrace gazelles

    Whose blood stains no wings

  11. يتجنّى على المَشوقِ ذُنوباً

    يجتنيها ثنائِياً وانتزاحا

    He collects sins against the beloved

    Gathering them two by two, moving aside

  12. إنْ أبى دمعُه يُقالُ تسلّى

    أو أتى قيلَ ذاك بالسّرِّ باحا

    If his tear refuses consolation, say he distracted himself

    Or came, it's said, at dawn to confess

  13. ما على من يقولُ في الحبِّ عارٌ

    قاتل الخالقُ الوجوهَ الملاحا

    No shame on one who says passion's shameful

    May the Creator kill the salty faces!

  14. قرّبوا لي الجوى وكان بعيداً

    منعوني الكرى وكان مُباحا

    They forbade me the beloved though he was near

    Denied me the wine though it was permitted

  15. ولقد راضَني الزمانُ ذَلولاً

    بعد أن كنتُ أستطيلُ الجِماحا

    Time has made me submissive

    After I used to spread wide my wings

  16. وتناءَتْ مطارِحُ الصّيدِ عني

    فأرَتْني لولا عليُّ اطّراحا

    The places of hunting moved away from me

    Showing me - were it not for ʿAlī - overthrown

  17. حسنٌ جاءَ من أبي الحسنِ النّدْ

    بِ فردّ الحِسانَ عندي قِباحا

    A beauty came from Abī l-Ḥasan the Nadīm

    Who returned ḥisān to me when it was ugly

  18. جدَّ في جودِ كفّه وتناهى

    فخشينا بأن يكونَ مِزاحا

    He was serious in his open-handedness and went too far

    We feared it was a joke

  19. وابتداني وما سألتُ نَوالاً

    كنتُ لولاهُ قد نسيتُ السّماحا

    He was first to favor me, though I sought no gift

    Without him, I'd have forgotten generosity

  20. جاهُهُ شفْعُ مالِه فهو وَتْرٌ

    يقتضينا من حالتَيْهِ اقتراحا

    His status makes up for his wealth, so he's a lute string

    We must pluck as his states suggest

  21. فإذا ما أردْتَ كان سَحاباً

    وإذا ما أردتَ كان رياحا

    When you want, he's a cloud

    When you want, he's winds

  22. ركضَتْ حلبةَ المدائح كما

    أن أصابت طُرْقَ الثّناءِ فِساحا

    The race track of praise galloped

    As if its paths to eulogy were smooth

  23. والقوافي خُرْسٌ فإن جُعِلَ الجو

    دُ مَسيحاً لها أُعيدَتْ فِصاحا

    Meters are dumb - if the atmosphere became

    A healer for them, they would speak again

  24. كم أُديرَتْ عليه كأسُ ثناءٍ

    هزّ أعطافَه إليها ارتِياحا

    How many cups of praise were passed around him

    Swaying their brims toward him, pleasingly

  25. مغرمٌ بالعُلا يسوقُ إليها

    طِرْفَ جِدٍّ لنَيلِها طمّاحا

    A lover of sublime virtues, driving toward them

    A serious eye to attain them, ambitious

  26. حسْبُه بالطُروسِ روضاً أنيقاً

    يجتَنيها شقائقاً وأقاحا

    Turbans are enough, a delicate garden

    Where he picks chamomile and pigeon pea

  27. وكفاهُ من المعاني اللواتي

    يجتَليها حِجاهُ روْحاً وراحا

    And his meanings suffice which his gravity refines

    Bringing spirit and respite

  28. شيمٌ صُوِّرَتْ من السّؤدُدِ المحْ

    ضِ فجاءتْ كالماءِ عذباً قَراحا

    A nature pictured from clear, sweet water

    Emerging like cool, limpid water

  29. طُبعَتْ نفسُه على الخيرِ حتى

    ليس يعدو الصّلاحَ والإصلاحا

    His soul is disposed toward good, so

    It doesn't exceed righteousness and reform

  30. يا هِلالا نَماهُ أكملُ بدرٍ

    لست ممّنْ أخشى عليه الصّباحا

    O crescent moon, a full moon reared him

    I'm not one who fears dawn upon him

  31. من أبي القاسم اقتسَمْتَ صِفاتٍ

    زِدْتَ أوضاحَها لنا إيضاحا

    From Abū l-Qāsim you inherited traits

    Increasing their lights for us, clarifying

  32. مثلَ ما يُنظمُ الحليُّ على الغي

    دِ وإن كُنّ كالصّباحِ صِباحا

    As jewelry is strung on a neck

    Though it be like the morning radiance

  33. زمني عندكم حديقةُ عزٍّ

    تقتضيني تنزّهاً وانفِساحا

    My time with you is a garden of glory

    Calling me to promenade and relax

  34. فأنا أقطعُ الزمانَ اغتباقاً

    تحت أفنانِ دوحِها واصطِباحا

    So I preempt time, taking the lead

    Beneath its branches, comforted at dawn

  35. فرجٌ يا بني أبي الفرجِ اقتدْ

    نَ إليّ السرورَ والأفراحا

    Relief, O Banū Abī l-Faraj, emulate me

    In happiness and joys

  36. قد تقضّى الصيامُ عنك حَميداً

    شاكراً منك عفّةً وصلاحا

    Fasting left you commendably

    Thanking your chastity and rectitude

  37. وأتى الفِطرُ سافراً عن مُحيّا

    كاد يحكي جَبينكَ الوضّاحا

    The Feast came in the morning after farewells

    As if describing your brilliant brow

  38. فتهنّأ به فقد صحّ لمّا

    أن رأينا هِلالَ وجهِكَ لاحا

    Congratulations - for it was right when

    We saw the crescent of your face shine
