تدانيتَ داراً والوصولُ شُسوعُ

فخِلُّك ذو الود الوَصولُ قَطوعُ

You drew near a house though arriving is out of reach,

So your drawing near, O intimate friend, is out of reach.

وإنكَ والقلبُ الذي قد ملأتَهُ

لكالقلبِ قد ضمّتْ عليهِ ضلوعُ

You and the heart you have filled

Are like the ribs pressed against the heart.

حُجِبْتُ ولم تُحْجَبْ محاسنُك التي

تأنّقَ منها يا إمامُ رَبيعُ

I was veiled though your perfections that

Adorn you, O noble Imam, were not veiled.

وضيعت في صونٍ فضعت وهكذا

يُضاعُ فتيتُ المِسْكِ وهو يَضوعُ

I lost in protecting, though I was negligent, and thus

Is wasted the musk as it exudes its scent.

وما أنتَ إلا العضْبُ لازم جَفْنَهُ

ليُنْضي بكفٍ إذا يروقُ يروعُ

You are but the eyelid, always near its eye

To be blinked when the eye would see and weep.

وحتْمٌ على البدر السرارُ وبُعدُه

بُزوغٌ على عاداتِه ونُزوعُ

The full moon must be veiled and distant -

Its rising is ordained and compulsory.

وما الدُرُّ في أصدافِه بغريبةٍ

إذا انحطّ عنه التاجُ وهو رَفيعُ

The pearl in its shell is no stranger

When the crown falls from it though still lofty.

يُقيمُ سُلافَ الكرْمِ بالدنّ حقبةً

ويخلَعُ عن فيها الختامَ خليعُ

It establishes the honor of generosity for some time

Then removes from it the seal, O base one.

ستُفْتَقُ عن زهرٍ بديعٍ كمامُهُ

فما ذاك من صُنعِ الإلهِ بديعُ

It will reveal a lovely flower as its wrap opens,

For that is not of God's artful making.

وتُسْفِرُ عن صبحٍ شريقٍ دجُنّةُ

ولا سيّما قد حانَ منهُ طُلوعُ

And the darkness reveals the brilliant dawn,

Especially when its rising is near.

كأنّي بها يا بنَ الكرامِ مُغيرةٌ

لها فوقَ هاتيكَ الربوعِ رُتوعُ

As if over those meadows, O son of nobles,

For it there are camels' resting places.

بحيثُ يريكَ البرّ كالبحرِ ذُبَّلٌ

وبيضٌ وبيضٌ أشرقتْ ودُروعُ

Where it shows you the land as if shriveled

With whiteness upon whiteness radiating and coats of mail.

وفرسانُ حرب لا البعيدُ عليهمُ

بعيدٌ ولا العالي الرفيعُ رَفيعُ

And the horsemen of war for whom neither distant

Nor lofty and high are distant or lofty and high.

بذلكَ لا تعجَبْ فإني قائلٌ

وإنكَ في الشهرِ الأصمّ سميعُ

With that, be not surprised, for I say

You in the deaf month are hearing.
