1. بدورُ الحيّ مالتْ للأفولِ

    فلا تسألْ عن الحيّ القتيلِ

    The stars of the living inclined towards sunset,

    So ask not about the dead star.

  2. أقام على المنازلِ من ضميرٍ

    وسار فؤادُه بين الحمولِ

    He dwelt in the abodes with conscience,

    And his heart marched among the burdens.

  3. ولولا الحبّ ما أبصرتَ جسمي

    بربعِهمُ محيلاً في مَحيلِ

    Were it not for love, you would not have seen my body

    In their lands, toiling in toil.

  4. فهل علِمَ الأحبةُ أن قلبي

    غداةَ البينِ آذنَ بالرحيلِ

    Did the lovers know that my heart

    At dawn of separation, bid farewell?

  5. وهل سُرَّ العواذلُ أن طَرْفي

    قصيرُ النومِ في الليلِ الطويلِ

    And did the flirts know that my eyelid

    Short of sleep in the long night?

  6. وفي تلك القِبابِ شِفاءُ وجدي

    ولكنْ ما إليه من سبيلِ

    In those domes is cure for my love,

    But no way is there to it.

  7. ولو كُتِبَ الوفاءُ على الغواني

    لما أصبحتُ ذا جسمٍ عليلِ

    If loyalty was prescribed on the flirts,

    I would not be one with a frail body.

  8. فإن أُحرقْ فمن زَفراتِ وجدي

    وإن أغرقْ فمنْ دمعي الهَمولِ

    So if I burn, it's from sighs of passion,

    And if I drown, it's in my pouring tears.

  9. طربْتُ الى الفراتِ وشوقتْني

    حمائمُ لا تملُّ من الهديلِ

    I thrilled for Euphrates, and I craved

    The doves that never cease their coos.

  10. عسى الأيامُ تُدنيني إليهِ

    وتُعطيني كما أهواهُ سولي

    May time bring me close to him,

    And give me what I desire, my wish.

  11. فروضُ العيشِ آلَ الى اصفرارٍ

    وغصنُ اللهوِ مالَ الى الذبولِ

    The duties of life turned yellow,

    And the branch of joy inclined to wither.

  12. ولو نّ البخيلةَ ساعفَتْنا

    بطيفٍ طارقٍ منها وَصولِ

    If the miserly one helped us a bit,

    With a phantom that comes and goes.

  13. لكنتُ أبلُّ من فِيه أُوامي

    وأنقَعُ من مراشفِه غليلي

    I would rinse my mouth with its rain,

    And drain my illness from its pillows.

  14. وأقطفُ ورد ذاك الخدِّ لثماً

    ونرجسَ ذلك الطرْفِ الكحيلِ

    I'd pluck the rose of that cheek for a kiss,

    And the narcissus of that kohl-lined eye.

  15. وبي ظمأ تحكّم في فؤادي

    الى رشفِ الرُضابِ السلسبيلِ

    I have a thirst controlling my heart,

    To the drink from the pouring freshet.

  16. وذكّرني سعادَ على التَنائي

    نسيمُ الروضِ ذا الريح القَبولِ

    The meadow breeze with fragrant blow

    Reminded me of days of bliss and union.

  17. أراها لا تميلُ الى التَداني

    ولا قلبي يميلُ على العويل

    I see her not inclined to approach,

    Nor is my heart inclined to lament.

  18. تحكّم دلُّها في كل قلبٍ

    كما حكمَ العزيزُ على الذَليل

    Her charm controls every heart,

    As the mighty controls the lowly.

  19. فإن تلبسْ ثيابَ الحُسنِ يوماً

    فإن ملابسي خِلَعُ النُحولِ

    If she wears the gown of beauty one day,

    My clothes are the gown of mourning.

  20. ولما خيّم الرُقَباءُ حولي

    جعلتُ الريحَ نحوكم رَسولي

    When tyrants crowded around me,

    I made the wind my messenger to you.

  21. فكم لي من نعيمٍ في النعامي

    وكم لي من قبولٍ في القَبولِ

    How much joy I have in intimacy!

    How much acceptance I have in union!

  22. لعلّ العيسَ تحملُني إليكمْ

    مواصلةَ التعجْرُفِ والذميلِ

    Perhaps the caravan will carry me to you,

    Continuing arrogance and acrimony.

  23. أيا صَرْفَ الزمانِ بلغتَ مني

    ومن تلك المعالمِ والطُلولِ

    Oh times that passed with me

    From those landmarks and hills.

  24. ألا إني انتصرتُ بآلِ نصْرٍ

    فما أخشى استطالةَ مُستَطيلِ

    Lo! I was victorious with every victory,

    So I fear not prolonging of rectangles.

  25. سحائبُ أزمةٍ فرسانُ حربٍ

    بدورُ دُجنّةٍ آسادُ غيلِ

    Clouds of crisis, steeds of war,

    Dens of darkness, lions of the jungle.

  26. له همٌّ كقدورهُمُ المُعلّى

    وبشرٌ مثلُ فعلهمُ الجميلِ

    They have a care like their lofty cauldrons,

    And good like their fine deeds.

  27. إذا شهدوا النديّ فمن نداهُم

    يشيَّدُ دارسُ الكرَمِ المَحيلِ

    When they attend to the call, who of them

    Is hosted by the generous, hospitable man?

  28. فإن ركِبوا فمجتمعُ الأعادي

    يفرِّقُ عن جريحِ أو قَتيل

    When they ride, the allies gathering

    Scatter from the wounded or the killed.

  29. وإما استُصرِخوا لدفاعِ ضيمٍ

    رأيتَ فعائلَ السيفِ الصقيلِ

    When they cry for help defending a wrong,

    You see the swords' kin unsheathed.

  30. فإن تُلحِقْ بهم يوماً سواهُمْ

    فما السَعْدانُ كالمَرْعى الوَبيلِ

    If you inflict them one day with their like,

    Then misfortune is not like plentiful grazing.

  31. جلالُ الدين عشتَ قرينَ عزٍّ

    يَبيتُ به عدوّك من خَمولِ

    Saladin, you lived alongside glory,

    Where your enemy sleeps in languor.

  32. إذا شامتْ صروفُ الدهرِ عَضْباً

    ثَناهُ عضبُ عزمِك ذا فَلولِ

    When turns of fate grow angry,

    Your angry resolve restrains it with neighing.

  33. ويومٌ ما به لذوي عثارٍ

    هنالكَ من مُقيلٍ أو مَقيلِ

    A day in which there is no glory for the feeble,

    Some find death, and some find life.

  34. تجولُ ضراغمُ الفُرسانِ فيه

    على عُقبانِ سابقةِ الخُيولِ

    The steeds of cavaliers prowl it,

    On racers faster than horses.

  35. وقد طلعتْ رماحُ الخطّ غاباً

    جرَتْ أنهاره بيضَ النُصولِ

    The lances of war rose like thickets,

    Its streams flowed with white spear-tips.

  36. وأطلع نقعَهُ سُحْباً ولاحتْ

    بروقُ البيضِ في رعد الصهيلِ

    Its depths rose like clouds, and flashed

    The lightning of blades in the horses' neighing.

  37. وأدبرتِ العداةُ مقصِّراتٍ

    به عن فعلِ ذي الباعِ الطويلِ

    The enemies fled, falling short

    Of the deeds of the long-armed.

  38. فإمّا بالسيوفِ مطوَّقاتٍ

    وإما في حُجولِ للكُبولِ

    Some girded with swords,

    Others fleeing to the shackled horses.

  39. فكنتَ أجلَّ من عُقِدَتْ عليهِ

    غداةَ الحربِ ألويةُ الرعيلِ

    You were more eminent than those to whom

    The banners of troops were tied the morning after war.

  40. إليك أتى ركابُ الشِعْرِ يطوي

    فسيحاتِ الحُزونِ مع السهولِ

    To you came the mounts of poetry, winding

    Through the expanses of sadness and plains.

  41. كزهرِ الروضِ قد جُرَّتْ عليه

    ذُيول غلائلِ الريحِ البَليلِ

    Like flowers of a meadow dragged over them

    Are the trailing skirts of the gentle wind.

  42. تخفُّ له العقولُ ولا عجيبٌ

    كذاك الخمرُ تلعبُ بالعُقولِ

    Minds are humbled by it, and no wonder,

    Like wine plays with minds.

  43. هديةُ مخلصٍ لكمُ محبٌّ

    عساكَ تُنيلها خِلَعَ القَبولِ

    A gift from a loyal devotee,

    May you accept it clad in welcome.
