1. سقاك وحيَّاك الحيا أيُّها القبر

    وفاضت على مغناك أدمعه الغزر

    It quenched your thirst and greeted you, O grave,

    And its abundant tears flowed over your soil.

  2. وزارت ثراك الطهر سحبٌ وفية

    لدى المحل حتَّى يجمع الطهر والطهر

    The pure clouds visited your grave, faithful,

    Where the Pure One will gather with the pure.

  3. تجود بسقياها على جدث العلى

    وإن كانَ في أرجائهِ البحر والبرّ

    The clouds rain down upon the tomb of the Exalted One,

    Though within its precincts lies the land and sea.

  4. إمام تقىً للملكِ في رأيه هدى

    وصدر علماً لله في أمره سر

    A virtuous Imam whose wisdom guided the king,

    A fount of knowledge obeyed by God in his command.

  5. فقدناه مشكور المساعي منزهاً

    عن الوزر إن أودى بذي تربة وزر

    We lost him, his tireless efforts so valued,

    Safe from sin though sin may claim the shrouded corpse.

  6. فلهفي على آرائه

    إليها الرماح السمر والعذب الصفر

    I yearn for his principles-

    To them the brown spears and the sweet yellow submit.

  7. ولهفي على أقلامه السود أوحشت

    إليها السيوف الحمر والنعم الخضر

    I yearn for his dark pens that saddened

    The red swords and verdant boons.

  8. سلام على الإنشاء بعد فراقه

    سلام امرئٍ أمسى لأدمعه نثر

    Peace upon eloquence after his departure!

    Peace to a man whose tears are now scattered!

  9. عليكَ ابن فضل الله شقت جيوبها

    فضائل في طيّ البلاد لها نشر

    Upon you O son of Fadlullah fell

    Virtues spreading through countries near and far.

  10. رحلت فألقى رحله كلّ قاصدٍ

    وقطع من أسبابه بعدك الشعر

    You journeyed on, so each traveller halted his mount

    And ties were severed after you, O kindled ember!

  11. وكانت بك الأوقات فجراً ولا دجى

    فأمست دجى لما انقضيت ولا فجر

    Through you existence was morn and eve,

    Now eve remains since you vanished; no morn in sight!

  12. وليس بقفرٍ ما سكنت وإنَّما

    أرى كلّ مغنًى لست فيه هو القفر

    It’s not a wasteland where you once dwelled,

    I see each habitation that lacks you is the waste.

  13. مضيتَ غنيًّا عن سواك موقراً

    وللدين والدُّنيا إليك إذاً فقر

    You left independently, revered,

    While religion and world still need you in destitution.

  14. كأنك لم تنفع ولياً ولم تضر

    عدوًّا ولك تحمدك في أزمةٍ سفرُ

    It’s as though you brought no benefit to a loyal friend

    Nor harmed a foe. Yet you are thanked in times of voyage.

  15. ولم يغزُ ذو الأملاك مغمدة الظُّبا

    بجيشٍ من الآراء يقدمه النصر

    No army attacked with sheathed swords,

    Led to victory by principles you held dear.

  16. ولم تنضَ في الأعداء كتباً جليةً

    سواء بها صفّ الكتيبة والسطر

    No books were composed, making clear

    Ranks and lines of battalions in even rows.

  17. ولم تخف أسرار الملوك إذا ارْتمت

    إليك ولم يفسح لمقدمك الصدر

    A ruler’s secrets were not hidden from you when concealed

    Nor was an open chest offered for your arrival.

  18. ولم تلق أعباء الأمور ولم يجل

    يراعاً ولم يذعن لك النهيُ والأمر

    You bore no burdens of authority, gave no order,

    No shepherd submitted to your prohibition or command.

  19. بل كنت تجمي الناس من كيدِ دهرهم

    فكادك موتورٌ وقد يدْرَك الوتر

    Rather, you protected people from fate’s trickery

    So embittered mortality conspired, pulling your strings.

  20. جزيت عن الإسلام خيراً فطالما

    خبا شرَرٌ عنه بعزمِك أو شرّ

    You were rewarded for Islam’s sake-

    So often did your resolve dim its threatening sparks!

  21. أفاض الدّجى حزناً لباسَ حداده

    عليك وحارتْ في مطالعها الزّهر

    Darkness dawned mourning garb in grief over you

    And stars in their rising places burned.

  22. ولم لا وقد أحييت ذاك تهجّداً

    وكم كثرت هاتيك أوصافك الغرّ

    Why not, when you spent night vigils thus

    And your so many fine qualities proliferated!

  23. وكم قاصدٍ يبكي عليكَ وقاصدٍ

    فهذا له بشرٌ وهذا له أجر

    How many weep over you, how many

    Find good news, and how many, reward!

  24. فلا يبعدنك الله من مترحلٍ

    له العزَّةُ القعساء والسؤدد الدثر

    May God not distance you from one who travels

    Bearing sublime glory and aging wraps.

  25. يودّ العدى لو بلغوا ما بلغته

    وكانَ لهم من عمرك العشر لا الشطر

    The enemies wish they achieved your triumphs

    Or had but a tenth of your lifespan, not a half!

  26. عزاءً عليه اليوم يحيى ببيته

    وصبراً صلاح الدِّين قد صلح الصبر

    Condolences to him whose home today restores-

    To Saladin consolation as solace suffices.

  27. ألا إنَّها الأيام من شأنها الرِّضا

    إذا احْتكمت يوماً ومن شأنها الغدر

    Lo, such are the days: acceptance, when fate judges one day,

    And betrayal, such is their disposition!

  28. وما الناس إلاَّ راحلٌ إثر راحلٍ

    إذا ما انْقضى عصرٌ بدا بعدهُ عصر

    People are but travellers, each trailing the one before,

    One generation passes, the next appears.

  29. تبدَّت لدى البيدا مطايا قبورهم

    ليعلَم أهلُ العقل أنهم سفرُ

    Their tombs looked out over ruins

    To show reasonable men: “You too shall travel!”

  30. عجائب تعيي النَّاظرين وحكمةٌ

    ممنعةٌ قد زَلَّ من دونها الفكر

    Marvels that exhaust beholders and wisdom

    Impenetrable, which thoughts fall short of!

  31. وغاية أهل البحث والفحص قولهم

    هو الرزق يمضي وقته وهو العمر

    The utmost scholar’s knowledge:

    Sustenance has its season, as does life!

  32. بحقّك قلْ لي أينَ من طارَ ذكره

    فأصبح في كلِّ البقاع له وَكرُ

    For your sake, tell me, where is he whose fame took flight

    To make every region his den?

  33. وأينَ ابن فضل الله ذو الرتب التي

    عنت لسناها الشمس أو قصر البدر

    Where is the son of Fadlullah, with high office

    That outshone the sun or competes with the full moon?

  34. مضى وبحقّ أن يقالَ له مضى

    فقد كانَ عضباً في الأمور له إثر

    He passed away- and it’s true to say he passed-

    For his principles made their lasting mark.

  35. سقى عهده المشكور عنا ولا غدا

    معانيه عفوٌ لا بكيٌّ ولا نزْر

    His memorable legacy remains, no tomorrow

    With meaning: neither weeping nor insignificant!

  36. وأكرم به من صائمٍ متخشِّعٍ

    تولى فأمسى في الجنان له فطر

    He honored with bounty the noted faster,

    Devout servant who entered the Gardens to break his fast!
