O paragon of the world, leave al-Misri aside—already
he has been eclipsed by the fame of al-Fadil al-Nisani.
By my oath, it is you who have the better claim to the words
al-Saʿid spoke because of the greatness of that matter:
In your assembly, awe has claimed its full due,
and there you see the innocent looking just like the guilty.
If I could, I would transfer from his dīwān
this encomium, as a duty laid upon my own dīwān.
