1. أستغفرُ الله لا مالي ولا ولدي

    آسي عليه إذا ضمَّ الثرى جسدي

    I seek Allah's forgiveness, I have no money or children

    I grieve for him when the soil covers my body

  2. عفتُ الإقامةَ في الدنيا لو انْشرَحت

    حالي فكيف وما حظِّي سوى النكد

    I eschewed staying in this world even if my state improved

    How could that be when my lot is nothing but misery?

  3. وقد صدِئتُ ولي تحتَ الترابِ جلاً

    إنَّ الترابَ لجلاَّءٌ لكلِّ صدي

    My sword has rusted while I have strips of land under the soil

    Truly the soil strips all rusty swords

  4. لا عارَ في أدبي إن لم ينل رتباً

    وإنَّما العارُ في دهري وفي بلدي

    No shame in my manners if I don't attain office

    Rather the shame is in my time and my country

  5. هذا كلامي وذا حظِّي فيا عجباً

    منِّي لثروةِ لفظٍ وافْتقارِ يدِ

    These are my words and this is my lot, how wonderful

    That I have a wealth of words and poverty of hands

  6. إنسانُ عينيَ أعشتهُ مكابدةٌ

    وإنَّما خلِقَ الإنسانُ في كبد

    The human being's eyes, suffering raised him

    Yet man was created to endure adversity

  7. وما عجبتُ لدهرٍ ذبتُ منه أسىً

    لكن عجبتُ لضدٍّ ذاب من حسد

    I do not wonder at a time from which I suffered agony

    But I wonder at a rival who melted from envy

  8. تدورُ هامتهُ غيظاً عليَّ ولا

    والله ما دارَ في فكري ولا خلدي

    His feelings boil with rage at me yet

    By God, he does not cross my mind or my thoughts

  9. من لي بمرِّ الرَّدى كيما يجاورني

    رباً كريماً ويكفيني جوار ردي

    Who will provide me company in the bitterness of calamity

    A generous Lord who will suffice me the company of my repulsion

  10. حياةُ كل امرئٍ سجنٌ بمهجته

    فأعجبُ لطالبِ طول السجن والكمد

    The life of each man is a prison of his afflictions

    So I wonder at the seeker of lengthy imprisonment and suppression

  11. أمَّا الهمومُ فبحرٌ خضتُ زاخرَهُ

    أما ترى فوقَ رأسي فائض الزَّبد

    As for worries, it is a sea whose abundant foam I traversed

    Do you not see the excessive foam above my head?

  12. وعشتُ بين بني الأيَّامِ منفرداً

    ورُبَّ منفعةٍ في عيشِ منفرد

    And I lived between the days alone

    And there is much benefit in living alone

  13. لأتركنَّ فريداً في التراب غداً

    ولو تكثرَ ما بين الورى عدَدِي

    I will leave alone in the dust tomorrow

    Even if my number amongst mankind multiplies

  14. ما نافعي سعةٌ في العيشِ أو حرجٌ

    إن لم تسعنيَ رُحمى الواحدِ الصمدِ

    Of no use to me is abundance in living or hardship

    If my Lord the Unique, the Absolute does not shelter me

  15. يا جامعَ المالِ إنَّ العمر منصرمٌ

    فابْخل بمالِكَ مهما شئتَ أو فجدِ

    O gatherer of money, life is fleeting

    So be miserly with your money however you want or be generous

  16. ويا عزيزاً يخيطُ العجبُ ناظرَهُ

    أذكرْ هوَانك تحت الترب واتَّئدِ

    And o mighty one, wonder weaves its web around his sight

    Remember your humiliation under the soil and comply

  17. قالوا ترقَّى فلانُ اليومَ منزلةً

    فقلتُ ينزلهُ عنها لقاء غدِ

    They said so-and-so has risen in rank today

    I said it will bring him down to meet tomorrow

  18. كم واثقٍ بالليالي مدَّ راحتهُ

    إلى المرامِ فناداه الحمامُ قَدِ

    How many have spread their carpets relying on nights

    To their hopes, but the turtledoves called, enough

  19. وباسطٍ يدهُ حكماً ومقدِرَةً

    ووارِد الموت أدنى من فمٍ ليدِ

    And ones extending their hands authoritatively and all-powerfully

    While the arrival of death is closer than the water they drink

  20. كم غيَّرَ الدهرُ من دارٍ وساكنها

    لا عن عميدِ ثنى بطشاً ولا عمُدِ

    How much the days have changed buildings and their inhabitants

    With no pillar for aid and no pillar for support

  21. زالَ الذي كانَ للعليا به سندٌ

    وزالتِ الدَّارُ بالعلياءِ فالسندِ

    What used to have support of the highest is gone

    And the house of the highest is gone, even the support

  22. تباركَ الله كم تلقى مصائدَها

    هذي النجومُ على الدانين والبعدِ

    Blessed is God―how many times its traps are encountered

    By these stars against those who are distant and remote

  23. تجري النجومُ بتقريب الحمام لنا

    وهنَّ من قربه منها على أمدِ

    The stars run to meet our turtledoves faster

    And they hasten from meeting them for a period of time

  24. لا بدَّ أن يغمسَ المقدارُ مديتهُ

    في لبَّة الجدي منها أو حشى الأسدِ

    The divine decree must dip its bucket

    Into the essence of the stalwart from it or the lion's guts

  25. عجبتُ من آملٍ طولَ البقاءِ وقدْ

    أخنى عليه الذي أخنى على لبدِ

    I wondered at one hopeful for longevity though

    That which makes one hopeless has made him hopeless

  26. يجرُّ خيط الدجى والفجر أنفسنا

    للتربِ ما لا يجرّ الحبل من مسدِ

    The night and dawn pull our souls

    To the soil forcibly like no ropes made of palm fiber can pull

  27. هذي عجائب تثني النفس حائرةً

    وتقعد العقلَ من عيّ على ضمدِ

    These are perplexing wonders that confuse the soul

    And idle the mind from awareness into unconsciousness

  28. مالي أسرُّ بيومٍ نلتُ لذَّته

    وقد ذوى معه جزءٌ من الجسدِ

    I have no secret on a day whose pleasures I attained

    And part of the body has melted away with it

  29. أصبحتُ لا أحتوي عيش الخمول ولا

    إلى المراتبِ أرمي طرفَ مجتهدِ

    I have become unable to endure the living of the indolent

    Nor do I cast an ambitious glance to high ranks

  30. جسمي إلى جدثِي مهوايَ من كثب

    فكيف يعجبني مهوايَ من صعدِ

    My body is willingly inclining to my grave

    So why would its willful incline to elevation please me?

  31. لا تخدعنَّ بشهدِ العيش ترشفه

    فأيُّ سمٍّ ثوى في ذلك الشهدِ

    Do not be deceived by the sweet nectar of life you sip

    For what poison did that sweet nectar contain?

  32. ولا تراعِ أخَا دُنيا يسر بها

    ولا تمارِ أخَا غيٍّ ولا لدَدِ

    Do not consider a worldly brother who is at ease with it

    And do not blame a destitute depressed brother

  33. وإن وجدت غَشومَ القوم في بلدٍ

    حلاً فقلْ أنتَ في حلٍّ من البلد

    If you find the people swindling in a country

    Then say, “You are in the right, away from the country”

  34. لأنصحنك نصحاً إن مشيت به

    فيالهُ من سبيلٍ للعلى جددِ

    I will advise you advice―if you follow it―

    What a path to the heights it will reveal

  35. إغضاب نفسك فيما أنت فاعله

    رِضى مليكك فأغضبها ولا تزِدِ

    Angering yourself over what you are doing

    Is pleasing your Master―so anger it and do not transgress
