1. نظير أبٍ كنَّا فقدنا ومحبوب

    يميناً لقد جدَّدتَ لي حزنَ يعقوب

    A father we were like, but he is lost, and beloved

    Indeed you renewed for me the sorrow of Jacob

  2. وهيَّجتَ أحزانِي على خيرِ صاحبٍ

    لقيت الذي لاقاه يا خيرَ مصحوب

    And revived my sorrows for the best companion

    I met whom met, O best ever accompanied

  3. لئن كنت خالاً زانَ حجب أخوَّة

    لقد كنت وجهاً للتُّقى غير محجوب

    If you were an uncle who adorned the veils of brotherhood

    You were truly the face of piety, unveiled

  4. وإن كنت كم أقررت لي عين فارحٍ

    لقد سخنت من بعدِها عين مكروب

    And if you validated for me many a delighted eye

    You also saddened after it many a grieving eye

  5. أقلَّبُ قلباً بالأسى أيّ واجبٍ

    وأندب شخصاً في الثرى أيُّ مندوب

    I turn a heart in sadness - what duty!

    And mourn a person in the soil - what deputy!

  6. بكيتك للحسنى وللبرِّ والتقى

    وللبركاتِ الموفياتِ بمطلوبي

    I cried for you for the good deeds, righteousness and piety

    And for the continuous blessings - as requested

  7. وللشملِ مجموعاً بيمنك وادِعاً

    وللخيرِ كم سببته خير تسبيب

    And for the gathered unity through your right hand - beseeching

    And for all the good you caused - best causer

  8. بكتكَ محارِيب التهجُّد في الدُّجى

    بكاءَ شجٍ حاني الجوانح محروب

    The niches of devotion cried you at night's darkness

    A crying, yearning, the essence grieved and troubled

  9. بكتكَ زوايا الزُّهد كانت خبيئةً

    لسكانِها تدنِي لهم كلّ مرغوب

    The corners of asceticism cried you - they were habitations

    For their inhabitants, bringing them all they desire

  10. بكتكَ ذوو الحاجاتِ كنتَ إذا دَعوا

    سفيراً لمضرورٍ مجيراً لمنكوب

    The needy cried you, whenever they called

    An ambassador for the distressed, sheltering the stricken

  11. بكتكَ دِيارٌ كنتَ أعطفَ والِداً

    لمن حلَّ من شبانها ومن الشيب

    Diyar cried you - you were most compassionate father

    To him who lodged of their youth or their old age

  12. وطائر يمنٍ قد أويتَ كوكرِها

    إلى نسب القربى بها خيرَ منسوب

    And a bird of Yemen you nested like their cuckoo

    Lineaging them to kinship through you - best lineaged

  13. إذا ألسنُ الآثارِ عنكَ تذاكرتْ

    شممنا على تِذكارِها نفحةَ الطيب

    When the tongues of traces speak of you

    We smell on remembering them a scent of aroma

  14. عليكَ سلامُ الله من مترحِّلٍ

    ترحَّلَ ذي جودٍ من السحب مسحوب

    Upon you God's peace from a traveller

    Travelling one of generosity from the clouds drawn

  15. وهنَّئتَ بالجناتِ يا تارِكي على

    سعيرٍ من الأحزانِ بعدَك مشبوب

    And you congratulated with the Gardens, leaving behind

    A hellfire of sorrows after you extinguished

  16. نُفارِقُ محبوباً بدمعٍ وحسرةٍ

    فمن بين تصعيدٍ عليك وتصويب

    To part from a beloved with tears and regret

    So between ascending upon you and aiming to you

  17. وخفِّف ما نلقى من الحزنِ أننا

    بمنْ غابَ عنَّا لاحقون بترتيب

    And lighten what we meet of grief, that we

    Will catch up with whom departed from us, by order

  18. وما هذهِ الأيَّامُ إلا ركائبٌ

    إلى الموتِ في نهجٍ من العمرِ مركوب

    And these are but carriages days

    To death, on a course of lifetime mounted

  19. إذا ظنَّ تبعيد الحمامِ وصلنه

    بشدٍّ على رغم النفوس وتقريب

    If reckoning the separation of pigeons joins them

    By strong longing against souls and nearing

  20. فكم هرِمٍ أو ناشئٍ عملت بهِ

    عواملُ من مجرورِ خطبٍ ومنصوب

    Then how many aged or youth has dictated upon

    Reasons from an afflicted fate and assigned

  21. وكم هين الأخلاقِ أو متغلبٍ

    نفاهُ بحتمٍ غالب غير مغلوب

    And how many of despised morals or defeated

    Banished him inevitably victor never vanquished

  22. وكم ذي كتابٍ في الورى وكتيبةٍ

    غدَا داخِلاً من موته تحت مكتوب

    And how many of a book in the world and scripts

    Became insider from his death under ordained

  23. وكم غافلٍ يلهو بساقٍ من المنى

    يدِيرُ على أمثالهِ وعدَ عرقوب

    And how many heedless plays with a term of wishes

    Rotates upon likes of him promise of life sworn

  24. وكم آملٍ في العمرِ يحسب حاصلاً

    أتاه حِمامٌ عاجلٌ غير محسوب

    And how many hopeful in lifetime reckons successful

    Came to him unexpectedly sudden uncounted

  25. ودُمْ يا إمامَ الوقت عمنْ فقدتهُ

    وعشْ عيشَ مرجوٍّ مدى الدهر موهوب

    Bloodshed, O Imam of time, for whom I lost

    And live a hoped living, eternity gifted

  26. مضى الخال حيث الوجه باقٍ لمادِحٍ

    فما الدهر فيما قد أتاه بمعتوب

    The uncle passed where the face remains for praiser

    So how is time in what came to it with injustice
