1. برغم العلى تاجٌ تحلى به الثرى

    وكانت ثراهُ هامةَ السحب في الذرا

    Although he wore a crown studded with gems

    And his ashes were the height of clouds in the ether

  2. وكان عليه جوهر الذكر أبيضاً

    فزاوجت فيه جوهر الدمع أحمرا

    And the essence of his glory was white

    Love matched in it the red essence of tears

  3. وكنت أرى عيشي مناماً بقربه

    فيا أسفي بالبعد كيف تفسرا

    And I used to see my life as a dream next to him

    Oh my sorrow at the distance, how do you interpret it

  4. وأجريت دمعاً كان يحسب فقده

    زماناً لسوء الحظ لي وكذا جرى

    And I shed a tear that was thought to lose him

    For a time, for my bad luck and so it went

  5. بروحي الأولى أفناهمُ الدهر مبقياً

    ببعدهُم هماً من الخطب أكبرا

    With my first soul, time destroyed them

    Leaving with their distance a worry greater than disasters

  6. سقانا بكأس قد سقاهم بمثلها

    ولكنهم كانوا على الموت أصبرا

    It gave us a cup it had given them alike

    But they were more patient against death

  7. ألا في سبيل الله سارٍ للحده

    وفي كل أفق ذكر علياهُ قد سرى

    Verily towards God's cause went to its extent

    And in every horizon his glory has spread

  8. حميد المساعي كيفما حل بلدة

    غدت بلدة فوق السماء وأزهرا

    Praiseworthy are the efforts wherever he lodged

    The town became above the sky and more flourishing

  9. مضى طاهر الآثار في كل منزل

    ألذّ من الماء الزلال وأطهرا

    He of pure traces passed in every abode

    Sweeter than clear water and purer

  10. عفيف السجايا باسط اليد بالندى

    وإن كان إلا من غنى النفس مقترا

    Chaste of traits, extending his hand with bounty

    Even if he had nothing but riches of the soul

  11. يطوف بعلياه الثناء محلقاً

    وإن كان عن أدنى مداه مقصرا

    Praise revolves around his glory hovering

    Even if it falls short of its lowest extent

  12. ويهتز للذكر الجميل كأنه

    وحاشا بقاه قد تناول مسكرا

    And zeal trembles for the beautiful mention as if

    God forbid, he had partaken intoxicants

  13. ويظهر مجداً والتعبد قبله

    وإنَّا لنرجو فوق ذلك مظهرا

    And he appears with glory and devotion aforetime

    And we still hope for even more manifestation

  14. أتى الشام من مصرٍ ولم نر مثله

    غماماً أتى من مصر للشام ممطرا

    He came from Egypt to Syria and we saw none like him

    A cloud that came from Egypt to Syria pouring rain

  15. فنور مرعى القاصدين وسبلهم

    فيا لك في الحالين روضاً منوَّرا

    So the pasture's light for pilgrims and their paths

    What a delightful, illuminated meadow you are for both states

  16. ومد يد النعمى إلى كل فضة

    دنا وَرَقٌ منها إليه فأثمرا

    And he extended the hand of favors to every silver coin

    A leaf drew near him from it and bore fruit

  17. وقابل أسرار الملوك بصدره

    وأورد عنهم باليراع وأصدرا

    And he faced the secrets of kings with his chest

    And quoted them genuinely and issued rulings

  18. وأخدمهم من رأيه ومداده

    صواباً كما ترضى الملوك وعنبرا

    And he served them with his opinion and ink

    With rectitude, as kings accept and ambergris

  19. وصان حمى الإسلام بالقلم الذي

    إذا مد حبراً خلت درًّا محبرا

    And he protected the sanctuary of Islam with the pen which

    When it flows ink, it pours pearls with good fortune

  20. ونظم أسلاك السطور فحليت

    من التاج أجياد الممالك جوهرا

    And he strung lines so the finest gems

    Of crowns were adorned with them

  21. وصادفني في معشرٍ بديارهم

    بعيداً من الحيَّين داراً ومعشرا

    And he met me in an assemblage in their abodes

    Far from settlements, a house and throng

  22. فكمل منقوصاً من اسمي لديهم

    وعرفني فيهم وكنت منكرا

    So he completed my name's deficiency with them

    And introduced me among them though I was a stranger

  23. ويسر من رزقي بيمن بنانه

    فيمَّن ما شاءت يداه ويسرا

    And he facilitated my sustenance with his right hand's blessing

    To whomever his hands desired and facilitated

  24. وحاول جبري رأفة وتعطفاً

    وقد كان جمع الحال جمعاً مكسرا

    And he tried to console and show me compassion

    When circumstances had altogether broken me

  25. وأثنى على جهدي بما هو أهله

    وأظهر أفعال الجميل وأضمرا

    And he praised my efforts as was deserving

    And displayed acts of kindness and concealed others

  26. فما ليَ لا أثني علي جود كفه

    لديَّ كما أثنى على المطر الثرى

    So why do I not praise his generous palm

    To me as he praised the rain upon the land

  27. وأبكي بلفظ من رثاء وأدمع

    منظمَ درٍّ تارةً ومنثرا

    And I weep with words of elegy and I tear

    Sometimes prose and other times verse

  28. على ذاهب قد كان للقصد ملجأً

    وللظن مرتاداً وللعين منظرا

    For one who was a refuge for pursuits

    And a guide for assumptions and a scene for the eye

  29. وعاد إلى جنات عدن تزينت

    ونحن إلى نيران حزن تسعرا

    And he returned to the gardens of Eden adorned

    While we are to fires of grief set ablaze

  30. فلهفي على دنيا العفاة تنكرت

    ولهفي على ربع السماحة أقفرا

    So my craving for the world of the chaste denied

    And my craving for the land of magnanimity desolate

  31. ولهفي على بيت السيادة والتقى

    ولهفي على حي القراءة والقرى

    And my craving for the home of piety and righteousness

    And my craving for the quarter of study and sanctuaries

  32. ولهفي على حكم تحف بلينه

    بوادر تحمي صفوه إن يكدرا

    And my craving for wisdom graced by its gentleness

    With early droplets that guard its purity if stirred

  33. ولهفي على رأي يضيء به الهدى

    إذا النجم في أفق السماء تحيرا

    And my craving for an opinion that illuminates guidance

    When the stars in the horizon of sky wandered confused

  34. ولم أنس مسرى نعشه يوم جمعة

    تجمع هماً كالخميس إذا سرى

    And I cannot forget the path of his funeral one Friday

    Gathering sorrow like Thursday when it courses

  35. ولهفي على جار من الجود طالما

    جرى معه صوب الحيا فتعطرا

    And my craving for a neighbor who for long

    Flowed with him towards friendly and fragrant climes

  36. وقد وعظتنا الحال منه كأنه

    خطيب رقى من صهوة النعش منبرا

    And the state preached us from it as if

    A sermonizer ascended the pulpit of his coffin

  37. مواعظ من حيث السكوت وإنها

    لأبلغ من نطق الفصيح إذا انبرى

    Counsels in terms of silence, yet they

    Are more eloquent than the speech of the eloquent orator

  38. كأن لم يسر والكاتبون أمامه

    يجهز وفداً أو يجهز عسكرا

    As if he did not walk and the scribes before him

    Prepare a delegation or prepare an army

  39. كأن لم يجل يومي وغى وسماحة

    يراعاً كما سُل القضيب وأزهرا

    As if he did not live days of luxury and amiability

    A shepherd as the rod is peeled so it flourishes

  40. كأَنْ لم يهزّ القصد منه شمائلاً

    ولا قلماً يعزى إلى الخضر أخضرا

    As if the pursuits did not move his features

    Nor a pen attributed to the eternally green

  41. على مثل هذا شارطَ الدّهر أهله

    إذا سرّ أبكى أو إذا ودّ غيرا

    For the likes of this, time portioned its people

    Whether it flowed or loved, it changed

  42. فمن سبر الأحوالَ لم يتعجب لها

    ومن عرف الأيامَ لم يرَ منكرا

    So whoever examines states is not surprised by them

    And whoever recognizes days sees nothing peculiar

  43. ومن ناله صبحُ المشيبِ ولم يفقْ

    إلى طلب الأخرى فما وهب من كرى

    And whoever old age befell and did not awake

    To seeking the next life, he did not bestow a thing repelled

  44. كما طلب ابن الخضر دارَ مُقامه

    فغلَّس في بغيا النعيم وبكَّرا

    As the son of Khidr sought his abode

    So he drowned in enjoying bliss and hurried

  45. وما تركَ ابن الخضر ميراثَ واجدٍ

    سوى الذكر فيَّاحاً أو الأجر نيرا

    And the son of Khidr left no significant inheritance

    Except a lingering fragrant remembrance or ample reward

  46. وأعناق أحرارٍ تملك رقّها

    وأحوال قوم قبل ما مات دبرا

    And necks of freemen who possess their servitude

    And conditions of a people before he died he mended

  47. عليك سلام الله من مترّحلٍ

    تخيرت قدماً ودّه وتخيَّرا

    Peace be upon you from one journeying

    Who chose to befriend him and preferred him

  48. فألبسني ثوبَ الولاءَ معتَّقاً

    وألبسته ثوبَ الثناءِ محرَّرا

    So dress me in the garb of loyalty unfettered

    And I dressed him in the garb of praise freed
