1. عطفت كأمثالِ القسيّ حواجباً

    فرَمت غداةَ البين قلباً واجِبا

    She frowned like a harsh bow

    So the next morning she shot my obligated heart

  2. بلواحظٍ يرفعنَ جفناً كاسِراً

    فتثيرُ في الأحشاءِ همًّا ناصِبا

    With a glance raising an aching eyelid

    Stirring worries that firmly aimed within my gut

  3. ومعاطفٍ كالماءِ تحتَ ذوائبٍ

    فأعجب لهنَّ جوامداً وذوائِبا

    With refractions like water beneath braids

    Wondrous frozen and fluid are they

  4. سود الغدائرِ قد تعقربَ بعضها

    ومن الأقاربِ ما يكونُ عقارِبا

    Black-haired with some intertwined

    And relatives can sometimes be scorpions

  5. من كلِّ ماردةِ الهوى مصريَّةٍ

    لم تخشَ من شهبِ الدموعِ ثواقبا

    No insolent passion's warrior

    Feared the spears of tears stabbing

  6. لم يكف أن شرعتْ رماح قدودِها

    حتَّى عقدنا على الرِّماحِ عصائِبا

    It did not suffice that their necks thrust lances

    Until we grasped the spears donning headbands

  7. أفدي قضيبَ معاطفٍ ميَّادةٍ

    تجلو عليَّ من اللواحظِ قاضِبا

    I ransom the rod of outstretched refractions

    Beaming from glances imposing edicts on me

  8. كانتْ تساعدُني عليه شبيبتي

    حتَّى نأتْ فنأى وأعرَض جانِبا

    My youth used to assist me against it

    Until it turned away and averted to the side

  9. وإذا الفتى قطعَ السنينُ عدِيدةً

    شابَ الحياةَ فظلَّ يدعى شائِبا

    When years detach a young man

    His life grays yet he's still called raven

  10. يا أختَ أقمارِ السماءِ محاسناً

    والشمسِ نوراً والنجومِ مناسبا

    O sisters moons beauty stars light

    planets aptly suited firmaments conveniently placed

  11. إذا كابدت كبدي عليكِ مهالكاً

    فلقد فتحت من الدموعِ مطالِبا

    If my liver endured deadly tribulations for you

    I openly unleashed showers of tearful demands

  12. كالتبرِ سيَّالاً فلا أدري بهِ

    جفني المسهد سابكاً أم ساكِبا

    Pouring like frankincense so I know not

    Which overflows more my raining eyelids or cascades

  13. كاتمتُ أشجاني وحسبِي بالبُكا

    في صفحِ خدِّي للعواذِلِ كاتبا

    I concealed my burning sorrows finding solace in crying

    My cheeks scripting poems for maidens to interpret

  14. دَمعي مجيبٌ حالتي مستخبراً

    للهِ دمعاً سائلاً ومجاوبا

    My tears question my state seeking counsel

    By Allah, questioning and answering tears!

  15. وعواذِلي عابُوا عليَّ صبابتِي

    وكفاهُم جهلُ الصبابةِ عائبا

    My chastity the maidens reproached

    Their ignorance reproaching chastity suffices

  16. ما حسن يوسف عنك بالناي ولا

    دمُ مهجتِي بقميصِ خدِّك كاذبا

    Joseph's beauty is not truer than

    My blood staining your cheek would be deceptive

  17. بأبي الخدودَ العارياتِ من البكى

    اللاَّبساتِ من الحريرِ جلاببا

    By the cheeks bare of weeping

    Wearing silk wraps

  18. النابتاتِ بأرضِ مصرَ أزاهراً

    والزاهرات بأرض مصرَ كواكِبا

    Flowers blossoming in Egypt's soil

    While blossomers in Egypt are like stars

  19. آهاً لمصرَ وأينَ مصرُ وكيف لي

    بديارِ مصرَ مراتِعاً وملاعِبا

    Alas Egypt where is Egypt and how can I

    Frolick and play in Egypt's prairies

  20. حيثُ الشبيبةُ والحبيبةُ والوفا

    في الأعربينِ مشارِباً وأصاحِبا

    Where youth and beloved and loyalty

    Drinking partners and companions amongst Arabs

  21. والطرفُ يركعُ في مشاهدِ أوجهٍ

    عقدت بها طرر الشعورِ محارِبا

    A glance kneeling at the spectacle of faces

    Tying up sentiments with skirmishing sparks

  22. والدهرُ سلمٌ كيفَ ما حاولتهُ

    لا مثل دهري في دمشق محارِبا

    Fate is a ladder however I tried it

    None can equal my fated skirmishes in Damascus

  23. هيهات يقربني الزمان أذًى وقد

    بلغت شكايتي العلاءَ الصاحِبا

    Beyond reach! Time will not injure me now that

    My complaints have reached the exalted beloved ruler

  24. أعلا الورى همماً وأعدلَ سيرةً

    وأعزّ منتصراً وأمنعَ جانِبا

    Highest of mankind in ambition and fairest path

    Most triumphant victor and sturdiest pillar

  25. مرآة فضلِ الله والقوم الأولى

    ملأوا الزمانَ محامِداً ومناقِبا

    Mirror of God's grace the masterful tribe

    Filled eras with praise and merits

  26. الحافظينَ ممالكاً وشرائِعاً

    والشارعين مهابةً ومواهِبا

    Upholding kingdoms and enacting laws

    Enforcing reverence, gifts and talents

  27. لا يأتلي منهم إمامُ سيادةٍ

    من أن يبذّ النيراتِ مراتِبا

    No eminent leader of authority emerges

    Without foliage of achievements flourishing steps

  28. إمَّا بخطَّيّ اليراعِ إذا الفتى

    في السلمِ أو في الحربِ يغدو كاتِبا

    Either with my inscribing pen if a young man

    Ascends in peace or war writing poetry

  29. فإذا سخا ملأَ الديارَ عوارِفاً

    وإذا غزا ملأَ القفارَ كتائِبا

    His hospitality filled the lands when generous

    His regiments filled the deserts when warring

  30. فإذا استهلَّ بنفسه وبقومهِ

    عدَّ المفاخرَ وارِثاً أو كاسِبا

    When he risks himself and his people

    He counts glories as heir or builder

  31. أبقوا عليَّ وقوَّضوا فحسبتهم

    وحسبتُه سيلاً طما وسحائِبا

    They deemed me copious and I deemed them

    A torrential flood and pouring clouds

  32. ذو الفضل قد دُعيت رواةُ فخاره

    في الخافقينِ دعاءَها المتناسِبا

    The virtuous whose fame's narrators were called

    In unison suited to his due invocation

  33. فالبيتُ يدعى عامِراً والمجدُ يد

    عى ثابِتاً والمالُ يدعى السائِبا

    Thus home called inhabited glory called fixed

    Wealth called pouring not ever depleted

  34. ما رحّبتهُ القائلون مدائِحاً

    إلاَّ وقد شملَ الأكفَّ رغائِبا

    However lavished with praises

    It encompassed few palms abundantly

  35. نعم المجدِّدُ في الهوى أقلامهُ

    أيَّام ذو الأقلامِ يدعى حاطِبا

    Renewing with passion days

    Of the impassioned called kindling

  36. تخِذَ المكارِمَ مذهباً لما رأى

    للناسِ فيما يعشقون مذاهِبا

    He took the lofty morals that he saw

    Mankind ardorously admire as doctrine

  37. وحياطةَ الملكِ العقيمِ وظيفةً

    ومطالعَ الشرفِ المؤيدِ راتِبا

    Upholding the sterile empire a function

    Funding auspicious glory a willfully imposed yearly income

  38. والعدلَ حكماً كادَ أن لا يغتدِي

    زيدُ النحاة به لعمرٍو ضارِبا

    Justice ruled nearly unopposed

    Increasing grammarians statements on Imru’ al-Qais

  39. والفضل لو سكتَ الورى لاسْتنطقت

    غرَرُ الثنا حقباً به وحقائِبا

    If excellence were silent the eras would solicit

    Many a paper with his merits and contents

  40. واللفظ بين إناءةٍ وإفادةٍ

    قسمَ الزمانُ فليسَ يعدَمُ طالِبا

    Speech ranges between sterility and meaning

    So time never lacks a suitor

  41. وعرائس الأقلام واطربي بها

    سودَ المحابرِ للقلوبِ سوالِبا

    Brides of pens delight me with those

    Black scriptures stealing hearts captivated

  42. المنهبات عيوننَا وقلوبَنا

    وجناتهنَّ الناهبات الناهِبا

    They steal our eyes and hearts

    Their gardens the robbers rob

  43. سحَّارة تحكي كعوبَ الرمحِ في

    رَوعٍ وتحكي في السرورِ كواعِبا

    A sorceress narrating spear blades

    And narrating pleasurable indulgences

  44. لا تسألن عن طبّها متأمِّلاً

    واسأل به دونَ الملوكِ تجارِبا

    Ask not of their composure contemplating

    But ask by them the sovereigns' trials

  45. يا حافظاً مُلك الهدَى كتَّابهُ

    سرَّت صحائفها المليكَ الكاتِبا

    O keeper king guidance scripts his

    Papers fascinated the royal scribe

  46. يا سابقاً لمدى العلى بعزائمٍ

    تسري الصَّبا من خلفهنَّ جنائِبا

    O preceder of lofty realms with resolves

    That the morning trails behind their tails

  47. يا فاتحاً لي في الورى من عطفهِ

    باباً فما آسى على إغلاقِ با

    O opener for me in the worlds by his amnesty

    A gate so I never mourn closure

  48. يا من تملكني الخمولُ فردَّهُ

    بسلاحِ أحرفهِ فولَّى هارِبا

    O he whose stupor possesses me but his

    Letters armory rebuffed in retreat

  49. يا معتقاً رقِّي وباعثَ كتبه

    للهِ درُّكَ معتقاً ومكاتِبا

    O emancipator raising my serfdom his writings

    Exalt you emancipator and scriber!

  50. يا غارِساً منِّي نباتَ مدائحٍ

    من مثلهِ يُجنى الثمار غرائِبا

    O planter from me a praise sprout

    Whose fruit is reaped wondrously strange

  51. إن ناسبت مدحِي معاليكَ التي

    شرُفت فإنَّ لكلِّ سوقٍ جالِبا

    If my praises suit your sublime qualities

    Then every market has an attracting patron I gift sincere praise to the truthful

  52. أهدي المديحَ على الحقيقةِ كاملاً

    لكمو وأهدِي للوَرى متقارِبا

    And gift the world a unifying poem
