1. O parchment, kiss the two palms of Shamsiyya,

Through whom—and through whose praise—the days shine proudly.

  2. You grew humble in her company—though company has never ceased to be

For her a surging sea and a rain cloud.

  3. And know that you have reached a watering place

Beyond which no thirst awaits those who come to drink.

  4. Lips of circling kisses have wreathed it,

Until the kisses upon it seem a veil.

  5. And remember the distress of one who says in his verse

A plea over which one year, and then another, has passed:

  6. “Turn aside to the sanctuary of the stipend,” chanting,

“O dwelling, what have the days done to you?”

  7. If you do not hasten my family’s relief through her,

    Then it—and they—are but dreams.
