1. نفرتُ عن الظبي الذي كانَ ينفر

    وحلت عن العشق الذي كان يؤثر

    I turned away from the gazelle that was turning away

    And refrained from the love that was impairing

  2. دعوني فما عين الغزالة كحيلة

    بعيني ولا وجه الغزالة نير

    Leave me be, for the gazelle's eyes are not more beguiling

    Than my eyes, nor the gazelle's face more radiant

  3. وخلوا أحاديثَ الجفون فواتراً

    فقد حلَّ بي الخطب الذي ليسَ يفتر

    And let the conversations of the eyelids be indifferent

    For the calamities that do not cease have afflicted me

  4. ونبهني الحال الذي بأقله

    ينبه من سكر الغرام كثَير

    And my state, which with little

    Awakens many drunk with passion, alerted me

  5. مشيبٌ وإقتار هو الشيب ثانياً

    ألا هكذا يأتي الشَّقاء المكرَّر

    Greying and little wealth - greying again is that wealth

    Alas, thus comes recurring adversity

  6. أبى الدهر أن يصغي لألفاظ معربٍ

    له أملٌ بين المقادير مضمر

    Fate refused to heed the words of an eloquent Arab

    It has hope between preordained destinies concealed

  7. فهل للأيادِي الناصريَّة عطفةٌ

    يغاثُ بها داعي الرَّجاء وينصر

    Is there any kindness in the supporting hands

    With which the supplicant of hope is helped and supported?

  8. رئيسٌ له رأي كما وضحت ذُكا

    وجودٌ كما يهمي الغمام ويهمر

    A leader whose opinion, when elucidated, is wise

    And whose generosity, when the clouds pour, overflows

  9. وعلمٌ إذا ما غاصَ في الفكرِ غوصةً

    رأيت لآلي لفظه كيفَ تنثر

    And whose knowledge, when it plunges into thought, a plunge

    You see how its words are scattered for the Highest Authority

  10. وبأسٌ يذيب الصخر لكن وراءه

    عواطفُ من أحلامهِ حين يقدر

    And whose might melts even rock, but behind it

    Are sentiments, when he judges, of his dreams

  11. علا عن فخارِ البرمكيّ فخارُه

    وما قدر ما يبدِي لدى البحر جعفر

    His excellence surpassed the excellence of pearls

    And the sea cannot match what Jafar shows

  12. وقد سكنت في قلبهِ الطهر رحمةٌ

    يكادُ بمسرى نشرها الميتُ ينشر

    And in his heart mercy has settled residence

    That with its diffusion the dead would almost revive

  13. فمن مبلغٌ تلك العواطفَ قصَّةً

    تكادُ لها صمُّ الصفا تتفطَّر

    So who will tell the story of those sentiments

    That almost make even deaf rock crack

  14. إلى مَ وأنت الغيثُ أرجعُ ظامئاً

    وحتى مَ يا ظلّ العفاة أهجر

    To whom, when you are the rain, shall I return thirsty?

    And to where, O shade of the weak, shall I emigrate?

  15. وكم يشرح البطال سيرته التي

    يكافحها من حادث الدَّهر عنتر

    And how the hero's life, which he battles

    Against the vicissitudes of fate like 'Antar, explains the unemployment

  16. وقالوا فلانٌ رمّ بالشعر عيشه

    فيا ليت أني ميتٌ لست أشعر

    And they said so-and-so wasted his livelihood on poetry

    Oh, would that I were dead rather than a poet

  17. تصرّم أقصى العمر أدعوك للمنى

    وأرقبُ آفاق الرَّجاء وأنظر

    I have reached the end of my life imploring you for my wishes

    And watching the horizons of hope and observing

  18. وأصبر والأيام تقتلني أسًى

    فها أنا في الدُّنيا قتيلٌ مصبر

    And I am patient while the days are killing me with sorrow

    So behold me in this world, killed yet patient

  19. أرى دون حظِّي مسلكاً متوعراً

    إذا ما جرت فيه المنى تتعثر

    I see my fortune has a difficult course

    When wishes pass through it they stumble

  20. ويحمرُّ دمعي حين تصفرُّ وجنتي

    فألبس ثوبَ الهمِّ وهو مشهَّر

    And my tears turn red when my cheeks turn yellow

    So I wear the garment of anxiety while it is still unruptured

  21. ولا ذنبَ لي عند الزمان كما ترى

    سوى كلمٍ كالروض تبهى وتبهر

    And I have no guilt, as you see, with fate

    Except for words that dazzle like a garden

  22. سوابق من نظم الكلام ونثره

    لها خبرٌ في الخافقين ومخبر

    Precedents of compiling prose and verse

    That are experienced in the two worlds and well-informed

  23. وأنت الذي نطَّقتني ببديعِها

    وأحوجتني أنشي الكلام وأنشر

    And you it was who inspired me to compose them beautifully

    And impelled me to create poetry and spread it

  24. فوائد إن عادتْ عليَّ مصائباً

    فأنت بتدبير القضيَّةِ أجدر

    Surplus, if misfortunes befell me because of it

    You are more capable of directing this issue

  25. وما هيَ إلاَّ مدَّةٌ وقد ارْتوى

    رجائِي فأضحى وهو فينان أخضر

    And it is but a period, and my hopes

    Have been watered and turned into saplings green

  26. وطرس إذا ما النقش عذّر وجهه

    فإنَّ وجوه القصد لا تتعذَّر

    And countenances, when the etching excuses their faces

    Then the faces of purpose cannot be incapacitated

  27. قصدتك للتنويه والجاه لا لما

    تبيض من هذي اللّهى وتصفّر

    I sought you for commendation and status - not for what

    Vanishes of these joys and turns yellow

  28. إذا جمع الإنسانُ أطرافَ قصدِه

    لنفحةِ مالٍ فهو جمعٌ مكسر

    When a person gathers the edges of his purpose

    For a whiff of money, it is a broken gathering
