    نعماه للصادر والواردِ

    O Judge of judges, sought for prosperity

    Blessings on your decree and incoming requests

  2. بعض الورى يطلبني شاهداً

    مع أنه ذو ورع زائد

    Some of the people ask me as witness

    Though he has more than enough piety

  3. فاعجب له من ورعِ ناسكٍ

    من مثلي بالشاهد

    I am surprised at his ascetic piety

    Wanting me as his witness

  4. أهلاً بها بيضاء عاطرةٌ إذا

    وصلت ينم بها شذاها والشذى

    Welcome to the white, fragrant one, when

    She arrives, awakening her sweet scent

  5. سحارة الجفن الكحيل إذا رنت

    عقدت لسان معوذٍ إن عوذا

    The kohl of the sleepy eyes, when it’s released

    Tying the tongue of the charmed by incantation

  6. تلك التي حكمت سهام لحاظها

    حكماً تأمله الجمال فنفذا

    She whose arrows from her glances rule

    A rule that beauty gazes on and pierces

  7. تجري الدماء وسيفها في جفنه

    نظراً وليس السحر إلاَّ هكذا

    The blood flows and her sword is in his eyelids

    A gaze – is magic not always like this?

  8. آهاً لرشقِ سهامها في هدبها

    والسهمُ أبعدُ ما يكون معذذا

    Alas for the throwing of her arrows in her cheeks

    While the arrow is furthest from being feathered

  9. ولحاجبينِ إذا تعرّض ناظر

    متأملٌ قالت لقوسيها خُذا

    And for the two eyebrows, when a gazing eye exposes

    Watching intensely, saying to its bows: Take!

  10. ولذلك الخدّ الخليليّ اللظى

    لو ينتحي الصنم الأصمّ لجذّذا

    And for that smooth, intimate, red-hot cheek

    If an idol would hear, it would melt

  11. قالت إذا غمضت جفونك فارتقب

    طيفي فقلت لها نعمْ لكنْ إذا

    She said: When you close your eyes, await

    My image, and I said to her: Yes, but when

  12. وسمعت عن سيفٍ ورمحٍ قبلها

    حتى انثنت ورنت فقلت هما اللذا

    You hear talk of a sword and spear before it

    Bending over and calling out, I said: Both are delightful

  13. عشقي كمدح جمال دين الله لا

    ينفكّ مشتغل الضمير بذا وذا

    My love is like praise of the religion of God’s beauty

    The soul busy with this and that never free

  14. المرتقي درجات مجدٍ جلّ أن

    يجذو سواه وجلّ عن أن يحتذى

    Climbing steps of glorious honor, too high

    To be matched and too high to be emulated

  15. مترفع الأوصاف عن مدح الورى

    فكأنما قول المديح له بذا

    Exalted attributes above praising people

    As if the words of praise to Him were inadequate

  16. جزل الندى والبأس لو لمس الصفا

    لجرى ولو لمس الحديد لفلذَّا

    Heavy dew and power - had it touched clarity

    It would have flowed, and if it touched iron would have melted

  17. عرف الحيا كفيه لما أخجلا

    بالبرق وجنته وقال هما اللذا

    It knows the live coals of his hands, how they shame

    Lightning and its heaven, saying: Both are delightful

  18. عالٍ على شرف النجوم كأنما

    قدَمُ الثريا في القياس له حذا

    High above the stars’ nobility, as though

    The foot of the Pleiades is to Him subordinate

  19. وجد الأنام على قريحته هدًى

    فرأوا ليوسفَ نار موسى تحتذى

    People found guidance in his talents

    So they saw for Joseph the fire of Moses as example

  20. كم مقترٍ عانٍ يلذّذ أمره

    وافى إلى أبوابه فتلذذا

    How many wretched refugees find his matter

    Sweet, frequenting his doors for bliss

  21. ومعاودٍ منه اقتباس فوائد

    لو شامها الأعشى الكبير تتلمذا

    And seeking from him useful insights

    If the great blind poet had smelled them, he would have become a student

  22. يمم حماه تجد سحاباً مشبماً

    يهنى الندى وتلطفاً متبغذذا

    Seeking his protection, you’ll find clouds bursting

    With dew, gentleness, sweet sighs

  23. وأناملاً خلقت لضمّ يراعةٍ

    تجري ببسط الرزق أو كف الأذى

    And fingers created to protect the weak

    Dispensing sustenance openly or preventing harm

  24. وفضائلاً فخرت على كأس الطلا

    في الذوق فهي خليقة أن تنبذا

    And virtues proudly excelling over goblets brimming

    In taste they are worthy of being dispensed

  25. كم من معاني مشرق في لفظه

    راحت فلا كدر يشين ولا قذى

    Many brilliant meanings shine in his words

    Passing with neither cloud nor speck to taint

  26. كالنجم في صافي الغدير تظنه

    أدنى منالاً وهو أبعد مأخذا

    Like stars in the clear pond, you’d think them

    Easily accessible, yet farthest outstretched

  27. يا آل حماد الكرام بذكركم

    نعش الزمان كأن ذكركمو غذا

    O Hamad family, noble ones, mentioning you

    Revives the times, as if your mention was food

  28. أما الزمان بكم فأصبح إذ رجا

    نطقاً وأما بالأنامِ فقد هذا

    Through you, truly time smiles hopefully

    Speaking, but through others, it withers

  29. خلّفتمُ للمكرمات ممدّحاً

    أعدى على رتب الزمان وانفذا

    You left the generous acts a praiser

    Most hostile to the times’ ranks and most penetrating arrow

  30. لله أنت لقد أجرت حشايَ من

    همٍّ تحكمَ أمرُه واستحوذا

    My God, you made the discourse of one

    Whose matter ruled him exclusively stop

  31. جانٍ عليَّ إذا اجْتهدت كواقع

    في الفخِّ زاد عناه حين تجبَّذا

    Assailing me when I strove like falling

    Into a trap, increasing my distress as it disdained

  32. حتَّى لجأت إلى جنابك شاكياً

    فأجرتَ من ألقى الرَّجا وتعوذا

    Until I sought refuge in your shelter complaining

    So you gave refuge from one resigned and incanting

  33. كرماً كما نبع الزلال ومرحباً

    وهدًى كما لمع الصباح فحبذا

    Like the flowing freshness of water and welcome

    And guidance like the dawn’s shining light - excellent!

  34. الغيث أنتَ وأنتَ أكرم ديمةً

    والسهم أنت وأنت أسرع منفذا

    You are rain, and you the most lasting of clouds

    And arrow - you, and you the fastest piercing
