1. Ah, what an eye—at daybreak it streamed with tears!

    The nights burdened it beyond all it could bear,

  2. Divided between sleeplessness and weeping;

    For you, it neither dried of longing nor slept.

  3. Longing tries to beguile my eye away from its tears;

    The noble-hearted, when beguiled, lets himself be beguiled.

  4. Grief exacts my sleepless vigil as its due—ah, what a war,

    Waged by two slayers united against my eye’s pupil!

  5. Accursed be the day of parting! What did it hurl at my sight,

    Till it streamed with tears—and what did it wreak within my breast?

  6. To one who asked, “What was it that made you weep?” I said:

    “A figure assailed my eye with separation, and so it wept.”
